So it’s been awhile since I’ve been able to get some actual modelling of my own done basically been mia since my wife got sick now things are going well again and with a house move started 2 days before the recommended Covid19 no travel, found that majority of my modelling items are still at the other house, so with what I have here I started a new plank to pass the time whilst we are all in stay at home mode
    It’s 70” plank 14” wide
Set in Australia in 1988 NSW railways SRA or State Rail Authority
The theme is a Urban Electric loco service depot, with surrounding industrial facilities served by rail
Trains will enter from a fiddle yard too the left from under a road bridge of the below track layout mock up to the back of the layout will be a Cold stores that will operate as a independent 3-3-5 inglenook siding if required,
Down the middle will be arrivals and departures tracks leading to the servicing depot.
To te front will be a switch back to a Mill unloading point and this will extend to a dairy unloading point in front of the fiddle yard. Being a urban theme brick retaining walls will be a feature at the rear and front of the layout with a photo backscene of a inner city industrial theme.
Being a electric traction depot the lines in will have overhead supply and industry’s will have small diesels to shunt as no electrification in these areas
Electric locos that may be seen will be older 46 class English electrics and Comeng 86 class
Diesels will be NSW 48 class or 73 class shunter
    A start has been made

SRA 86 class electric in the Candy colour scheme
You can see where the layouts name comes from now.

Perfect for keeping you amused on the lockdown. I hope the house move goes well once it finally starts moving again.

Good to hear that shelly is doing well.

Nice idea Chris! and nicely executed.
I have been distracted by similar thoughts, to build a shunting layout in lockdown (if it gets that far for me!). Mine will be slightly larger, to take advantage of my available space, both storage and transport, but will have less trackage.
I really like your choice of era.
Maybe when all this is over all the local layout builders of portable layouts might be able to stage an exhibition this year, there should be a lot of venues empty without bookings I suspect. The layout that I'm getting distracted from is the kids u-drive one, which no exhibition would be complete without.
Back to your layout, I was wondering what you propose making your overhead structures of. I have 3D laser scanned and have made diagrams of many of the Blue Mountains stanchions, but I am yet to find a material that is small enough and strong enough to keep true scale. As this is to be a feature of a future layout of mine I am giving it quite a lot of thought. The more modern posts are considerably thicker, but I haven't done the calculations on these as I am more attracted to the more ornate designs of old, also keeping in my era. Your layout for the overheads looks nice and challenging, I assume you are going to scratch build these.

    Cheers
    Tony

Looking forward to the new build Chris. You may have to speak to Geoff Small about the stanchions as he had a lot on his Mullet Creek layout, now at Australian Modeller...

    Cheers, Gary.

Ok so onward with the little project
    A near disaster
I decided no underlay as generally most of the trackage in the yard will be infilled so decided to stick the track down
Now didn’t have my box of glues with me yet so found a small bottle of PVA in the shed, so used this
Weighted track and left for a few hours cam back to find that all the rail had gone green  a reaction to the glue it was an unopened but old bottle probably from the era that they used a acidic base for the PVA so several hours were spent cleaning and neutralising the green corrosion, so that set things back
Lucky my wife was able to pick up a bottle of the Aquaheer fast set pva that I know is stable with track and track is now all stuck in place and wired up for the main part for DCC frogs Juiced via a Tam Valley hex juicer
    and it all works

    Tony
Haven’t chosen what to use Will be all scratch though lucky not that much to do in reality,
may be brass H section won’t be plastic as being planned for exhibitions needs to be robust, I’ve seen modellers using peco code 100 rail as well to make representation on the overhead.

    Gary
Yes mullet creek I’ll have to have a look as remember that looking very effective.
    Ian
yes all based about having something moving at all times when on show

    Paul
I wish it was that easy :giggle:

main section secured and wired for DCC and has been tested all works need to get some point motors etc now.

Whilst there is a lot of trackage shoe horned into the area as it’s a urban theme so this is how it would be.
I’ve tried to introduce some curving track as much as possible to create a little bit of visual length perception of it being bigger as all straight track usually dose.

A great photo posted on a FB page by Brendan Winkler of Delec in early 1990
This is the look I’m going for with the motive power part of the layout.

Hi Chris, are you far from your former residence?
Good to hear all OK, a nice little project to keep you all sane during the lockdown.
I used code 100 for my stanchions on my former HO layout in the garage.
    cheers
    Bob

    Thanks Bob
The code 100 seems to be the choice for basic do it yourself stanchions have found dozens of references to using in in the quick bit of research I’ve done to scratch building them.
A basic jig on a bit of timber and they are a quick solder up once painted they definitely fool the eye.
Thinking of using Phosphor bronze wire for the drop links and stand offs to the wire from the stanchion that way will be a bit springy
Distance is not far, about 25min in the car south of where the other house is

I probably still have my jig buried somewhere but it would be that extra 25mins travel that would be the killer :>)
    cheers

A good use for code 100 rather than as track

    :facepalm::faint::giggle::hammer:

:scratchchin: Well it’s like that is it
I think in the 25 min I’ll have a jig knocked up

is a shame places in this country are so far apart and the roads are not conducive to high spies so t can take forever to get between places

This is for the non down under modellers here’s the distance between Bob and I, as an example.

Just been checking what I have left of the code 100 and looks like I’ve given most of it away ( won’t use that again oops), may have enough to just do the stanchions fingers crossed will need some carful cutting no wastage.
Considering the amount I’ve put down over the years and pulled up, and replace with code 75.

Last trip the section from Gloucester to the Pacific highway was nothing to write home about.
Code 100 makes good O gauge track, all my first layouts indoors were handlaid with it. Soldered construction allowed me to use Cols wheels and NMRA 172 as well as the finescale ones.
    cheers

A few minutes down the Lane today
Track basics painting is now done
    Air brushed with acrylic brown
Next will be the painting for the rail sides with several colour to show the new loco and older rail in the goods sidings,

The power feed wires have almost disappeared with the painting once the ballast goes on will be very hard to see

I have soldered the feeds under the rail thus all but eliminating the blob of solder on the side of the rail all track lengths of rail have a feed back to the DCC bus no reliance on the rail joiners for power and DCC signal transfer
