Now with added, and intentionally, wonky roof...

    Hi all,

A view down to the bufferstops at Talerddig station on a quiet Sunday morning. The only sign of life is a lone sand wagon and 20t brakevan that sit abandoned in one of the sidings:

I've decided that I'm going to cut back on my postings as I have three threads on the go and lots of half finished, seemingly unconnected projects. I think it would be more interesting for you guys if I just post either finished projects or proper work in progress updates as opposed to my current scattergun approach!

    This is a random post!

When I first started building the layout, I was able to use a conservatory that had been built by the previous owners to serve as a utility room. That didn't serve our purpose, so the room was largely ignored while others priorities were addressed in the house. It subsequently became a handy room for tasks like baseboard building because the natural light was great:

Anyway, I was recently served notice by SWMBO to vacate so it could be pinkified:

Sure it looks nice, and it's handy for sitting in, but where am I meant to build baseboards now!

Merry Christmas Matt. I'm sure you'll find time to work on those two layouts. Just remember, layouts are really never ever finished.... ;)

    Cheers, Gary.

    Hi all,

Did you miss me? Up until the start of the year I was having possibly my most focused period of railway modelling ever. Anyone who followed any of my threads will have seen what I was doing, albeit with a scattergun approach.

Then, around Feb, I decided to finish off a 1/48 scale aircraft model that had been sitting on my bench for over 12 months. My intention was only to clear some space. I should have known better, because I ended up getting sidetracked, and that's what I've been doing ever since.

I hope no one minds, but this is what I've been up to:

1/48 Hasegawa P-40 representing the one captured by the Finnish Airforce in 1943:

    1/48 Bf-109 under construction:

1/48 Spitfire Mk Vb under construction:

    IMG_20200514_124128.jpg

Anyway, all the while I was looking at the layout(s) and wondering when I'd get back to them. And now I am. During this time, I've drawn some conclusions. Firstly, the baseboard is too small really, and no wonder I was struggling with it. Despite the temptation, I'm not about to scrap it and start again, even though that makes sense. I'm determined to do something with it. I did re-evaluate what I was trying to do, which led to me widening the hole in the backscene to allow me to complete a run round loop off-scene.

One of the other issues with the baseboard was a noticeable dip at the storage yard end. I'd clumsily tried to fix this by putting packing under the cork when I laid it, but it was only partially successful and was never going to lead to good trackwork or running. As I had to remove some of the cork to widen the hole, I made the effort to address this at the same time. It only took a piece of wood glued and screwed underneath to now give me a totally flat board.

The station building also bugged me. Due to it being constructed from multiple layers, it had dried slightly "off" which led to a slight curve at the bottom edge. A bit of brute force fixed this, but I'll have to repair the inevitable damage if I proceed with it.

Finally, some pictures to remind people where I am.

If you've read this far, thank you! Hope everyone is keeping safe in these strange times.

Nice model aircraft, nice shoes and nice work on the layout ! :D

You have taken the right approach with the layout by fixing it now. You would kick yourself if you didn't fix the dip in the baseboard and the locos ran sporadically across the dip.

    Cheers, Gary.

Thanks for the comments Toto and Gary.

So the signal box. Some of you will know its based on the now demolished box at the real Talerddig. I really wanted to build this as a nod to the real location. However making the windows individually isn't the most enjoyable task, and it's a task I have to be in a certain mood to do. And I've not been in that mood for 12 months + and don't think I'll be in that mood any time soon.

I recently picked up the Wills SS48 signal box kit cheaply from eBay. I quite like it, but I don't really want kitbuilt structures on the layout, I want to scratchbuild them myself. Also, it's pretty generic - by that I mean it appears on numerous layouts. But it does have reasonable windows.

So I've made a start at kitbashing it into something more individual, but completely freelance. I've cut off the planked lower section and built a brick base instead. Here's a picture of it mocked up - note it's just tacked together here hence some gaps.

    IMG_20200521_220155.jpg

I already prefer it to the original and can live with any errors.

Ironically, I could probably have turned it into a reasonable version of Talerddig box by cutting down the front side so it only had three upper windows, and by building a slightly higher brick base but a) I didn't think of that until just now and b) it would have involved a lot more work.

Very nice models, the aircraft are very nice models.

The signal box build looks impressive, I like the sash window in the base build - really fine work.

Thanks Paul. I'm not quite sure if modifying the kit is really worth it, as it'd be relatively easy to build completely from scratch, but it's been an enjoyable project so far.

I'm contemplating going Scottish (and changing the layout name)!
