    Ok,

The news on this competition broke earlier but it's time to start coming up with the scope of this competition.

Here are some rules to start with. The remainder will be flushed out over the coming couple of days as questions are asked for clarification.

    1. Open to everybody including moderators
    2. Open to any scale / gauge
    3. Photo's of where the build is currently must be posted up as an j production to your interest to take part.
    4. Regular updates with photo's must be submitted. I wont state what regular is ( be reasonable ) weeks of absence is not recommended.
    5. The subject matter can be anything ..... wagon, loco, coach and I will allow other modes of transport including aviation, buses, cars, lorries etc.
    6. The level of current " completeness " can be as much or as little as you want but bear in mind " the level of involvement " will be one if the criteria that will be used to judge the winner. So if you only have to add wheels, you are unlikely to win. However if this competition encourages you to " get it done " then feel free to take part no matter what the level of involvement.
    7. The start date will be a week today ( next Saturday )
    8. The completion date will be the end of September. That's 3 months and the reason for this is we are hitting the holiday season whatever that looks like due to COVID19.
    9. It must be your own work ( impossible to know but just a statement and the rest is down to integrity of which I am sure you all have in bucket loads).
    10. The criteria to be judged will be quality of build ( with allowances made for experience of builder in order to encourage everyone to try ). Regularity of posted updates which are a must. I WILL STRESS THIS POINT
    11. An element of the general feedback from other members etc which will assist in me not being the only judge.

Ok ..... that's for starters. The fact ut doesn't start until next weekend gives a little time to flesh out any queries and any potential things I've simply missed.

I am still considering what is up for offer as prizes but be assured they will be reasonable prizes. I am still talking to sponsors with regards to what they are donating yet. I will also probably put up a platform 1 prize offering.

It looks like there could be potentially 3 prizes. I will have to think on how to categorise the winners as without knowing the various scales etc of what is being entered, it's difficult to select appropriate prizes that will be of interest. Rather than any prizes for prizes sake.

I think there will be a considerable O gauge representation so I am safe in saying there will be at least one prize for best O gauge entry.

If we have folks doing any other scale there could be a " best of the rest " prize.

There could also be a spanner thrown into the works as a final prize for " best newcomer " which allows for and encourages everyone to have a go. Suggestions welcome.

Some of the above categories may well end up " one horse races " the only way to make these more interesting and competitive........ is to TAKE PART .

I'll try and advise of prizes by the end of the week.

Any questions / constructive comments ...... feel free to add.

If you are submitting your intention to take part, please do this by starting your own thread which must clearly state your username and " shelf queen competition entry "

    Cheers for now

    Toto

Just a bit of an update.

Keep it in mind that if you dont have a started but yet incomplete model to use, you could always use an unstated model that you have had " on the shelf " that you have been meaning to get on with.

The principle idea is to give folks a bit of encouragement and a reason to pick up interest in a subject that you have bought ........ and it's just laid there gathering dust. I think the bigger benefit would be to complete a started kit rather than start off another one which could end up lying there.

Part of the criteria will be that you actually complete whatever your entry is. Added motivation I think we will call it. :avatar:

    Hiya Toto.

Sounds like a good idea for a competition.

I’d like to give it a try, but don’t have any railway themed kits unbuilt or on the go at the minute. I do however have a couple of old Lima diesel locos that I intend to get running again, add detailing, repaint and convert to DCC. Would that qualify for this competition?

If not I have a Red Arrows Airfix kit that was started but not finished.

    Thanks

    Andrew.

    Hi Andrew,

Your conversions and detailing and repaint sounds quite involved to me. I'd say they are in. The red arrows kit can qualify as long as there is a reasonable amount of the build still to go.

The level of unbuilt work will play a significant part in judging but other elements like quality and frequency of update posts, reaction / reception by the members etc will also play a part so I would not rule out participation.

I'd say ...... go for it and good luck. :tophat::thumbs:

In order to further diversify both the criteria and the overall chances of everybody getting a chance of a prize regardless of their skill level will be the last category of " best new comer " being extended to cover " or notable entry ".
This may help cover builds where whilst the " overall size / quantity " of the task in hand has maybe been less involved. Never the less somebody has tried and provided an entry which has still been interesting and worthy of note.

I think I am trying to cover as many bases as possible here ( whilst creating myself a judging nightmare ) but hope the responses and posts of the general membership will go a long way to helping me make some difficult choices between quality, experience and general effort of participation.

We are not all seasoned experts and the hope is that everyone can at least be in with a chance. I hope I achieve this aim whilst being fair.

    Good luck to everyone involved.

    Toto

Terrific ..... another entry. This seems to be a very popular theme which looks promising for participation. Great stuff. I think we'll see a lot of folks tuning in and hopefully encouraging all those who take part. It's what we are all about.

There will of course be more competitions to come. I try not to run to many all at once unless there is enough interest.

    Good luck all.

    Ok,

We are getting some good numbers on this.

End of September completion date and the official start date for starting is tomorrow .... July the 1st. That gives three months to run.

Now ..... given that regular updates are required, I will allow two more weeks for folks to register their wish to enter. I think that is fair. The reason being that after that, anybody entering would have a reasonably significantly less posting effort.

So ... numbers are good but still in with a chance should you decide you want to join the current entrants. Last accepted date for entry 14th July midnight UK time zone.

I'm sure we will get a few more yet.

Good luck to all, I'm looking forward to what you have to offer.

Now that I am getting a feel for the scales folks are entering in, I will be in a better position to announce the official prizes to be won. I'll do that by the 14th July .... closing date for entries.

    Cheers

    Toto

    Did we decide on prizes?

I’m hoping that I’ve not fallen foul of the regular updates as working shifts you can go days without doing anything. (Where as the next entrant can be up till the early hours)

it’s been good fun to get it finished. I have really enjoyed seeing others work.
    Good luck to all..

    And as above,

The winners of the shelf queen competition are as follows.

    In 3rd place ..... :drums::drums::drums:

Andy solice with his excellent scratchbuilt wagon who wins a Connossieur models 12 ton pipe wagon kit.

In 2nd place is York Paul with his fantastic Britannia build who wins our other Connossieur models offering of the Milk churn van

And first place goes to Kimbo for his pair of excellent Hymec upgrades. Kimbo wins an Ace model loco kit ( supplied by myself ) . I have not stated an exact model yet as there will be a choice to pick from. ( I will PM you Kimbo).

The standard of all the builds that entered were terrific and it was a bit of a quandary trying to pick but in the end, I followed first principles of both the actual build and the commitment to updating posts etc. Unfortunately I could only select 3 at the end of the day but a massive thanks goes out to all that took the time to enter.

To those who didn't win through this time, there will be other competitions coming up very soon. They should be getting announced within the next couple of weeks if not sooner.

To the winners ...... a huge congratulations for their fine work and I will be contacting them soon for postal details to let me get the prizes out to them.

Again, many thanks for your participation and to all who posted their words of encouragement as the posts developed.

Goodness gosh... well what can I say but THANK YOU very much and well done all, of course a massive congratulations to Kim in getting first place winner, the Triang Hymeks are not an easy conversion upgrade as I speak from experience (no mine was never finished) ... the plastic is truly awful to work with and to do two together is something else. Thank you very much again Toto ... this is a wonderful surprise indeed.

Your loco was very commendable. Made a fab job updating it and the finish was brilliant with the lining and name plates!:thumbs:

    Wow, Thank you, I’m honoured.
Well done to every one who took part in the competition and congratulations to Andy and Paul

Great completion idea Toto, which I can honestly say had it not been for, that there would still be two very sorry looking lumps of plastic still sitting on the top shelf collecting dust. I hope every one enjoyed all of the entries and to those that haven’t finished their projects, keep plodding along with them and keep us all posted.

    Thanks again Toto
