    Cheers Mark.
Correct, I’ve had to buy the larger one due to the size of the o gauge kits I’m building. Some of the sole bars that have two bends to form would be extremely hard to do without it.
The one in the picture is a 300mm Piranha photo etch tool :-

But for oo gauge and smaller jobs with o gauge I use a cheap one for our “friends” overseas. I paid less than $30 for it.

Kim thanks for the information as it all will help me when I come to have a go at an etched kit myself. Not to far in the distant future.

Go for it Mark, but be warned it’s addictive, but very rewarding to look at a model when finished and say, “I built that”.
Plenty of members here to help you as well, in all scales.

Anybody liking this kit should keep a keen eye open on the forum as there is one in the post to me this week as a competition prize offering courtesy of Jim. I'm not sure exactly when or in which competition it will he offered up but it has to appear in one of them so keep an eye open for the announcement ......... and ...... pay attention to the build. :avatar::tophat::thumbs:

Well I’ve had a re think on this build. For anyone daft enough to have a go at these drop doors I would recommend cutting all the inner and outer pieces first before bending to shape. Reason being that you only really get one chance at bending the etch, then if you open it back, which I’ve had to do to enable me to cut the sides accurately, it weakens the fold line and the piece breaks off. Now one end fell off, no real problem there to re solder it back on but after cutting the long sides and centre posts you end up with a very narrow delicate strip which as I bent it back into position snapped off.......so I’ve come up with a plan B.

I’ve soldered a piece of railing to the floor edge, just the one side first to test out the theory,

the sides and ends have then all been cut to the correct shape to allow the hinge to be added

laminate all the parts together, offer up the door to the side and mark where the hinge cutouts need to be.

    then offer up the door..

for me this works well, it gives a really nice lower edge to the bottom “plank” and it also saves me having to laminate two thin strips of etch together and then solder to the base edge, possible to do but the end result would not be as clean as this method, so I will complete this side and once happy remove the original door and cut off the un even strip and replace it with a section of track....

    Hi Kim,

Good to see you back at it, I was missing my LNER fix:thumbup:

I am struggling a little to see how much you had to remove to get the hinge etc to fit but I am sure that all will become clear once you have a side fully assembled.

These pictures should make it a bit clearer Rob.

I’ve added both the sole bars and the second section of rail to the other side of the floor, this has now made the assemble much firmer to start cutting out the other hinges and fitting the doors.

you can see the hinge holes cut out for the first door

and the door in position, nice and flush along the bottom and at the end on the body

hinge bar holes drilled and .8 wire bent to form the pin that the hinge fits onto

a little bit of fettling and a slightly over sized hole for the .8 wire will make the door fit correctly, the challenge was making the door assembly removable for painting. A bit more fettling on the hinge and the door can now be removed . ........three more to do.

    Cheers Rob.

    well the insanity continues......

the centre post has to be filed down a tad, this was cut out from between the two doors on the etch, it needed to be secured to the rail section between the doors

First fix showed how weak this would be, so I’ve soldered a piece of wire behind it and drilled this into the chassis, soldering it up and this has helped to firm it up a little, but care will still need to be taken with it.

look carefully.......can you see them ?

two fitted to the post to form the latching system..

add some fine chain, make a pin out of one strand of wire twisted ( yes this is o gauge !! ) and you end up with this..

and yes with a pair of tweezers, holding your breath, you can inset the wire in the latch

Hinges completed this morning.....I must get back to the Hymeks.....

centre post showing the two hinge points for both doors

Doors all fitted, and all are removable for painting....I haven’t fitted the latches to the opposite side yet, hence the hand of god

time for a good clean up and put it away for a day or so so that I can concentrate on the Hymek builds.......

Taking a break from the Hymeks, and now a month since I updated this thread .....where does the time go?

All the drop door detailing completed.
Parts from Walsall models UK arrived a couple of weeks ago so time to install the rocking three point chassis

Very easy to fit and works very well on my track work so onwards and forwards, complete the chassis detailing, including brakes and axle supports, strapping etc then give the model a good clean and spray with primer.

    doors sprayed off the model.

once dry.....the hairdryer helps out here.....the lower parts of the model can be sprayed Matt black and the upper parts in a red oxide, the interior will be given a wood effect so for now I will leave it in primer ready for painting. I’ve not installed the buffers or vacuum pipes yet as I prefer to paint these by hand and then glue them on (white metal parts) this way it makes sure they still work and not get clogged up with paint. Like wise the coupling hook and chain are treated to a gun blue bath to blacken them up.

once this has all dried off and hardened I will add the buffers, doors, vacuum pipe and couplings read for final interior painting and then weathering.

So I couldn’t resist adding the doors for a photo pose, still a little way to go but you get the idea of how it could be posed on the layout.

    Hi Kim,

What a cracking model this is turning out to be.

A question on the livery if I may?

I note that you have painted the solebars and headstocks black. Is this how BR painted them? I am not a BR modeller so would have followed LNER practice and painted all the bodywork red oxide and then black for all below the solebars.

I ask not to criticise but as a learning point because it's something that I will need to be aware of if I finish any models for sale in BR livery at any point.

    Regards Rob
