Disaster in the workshop this teatime, I thought I'd make a final concerted effort to complete the last pieces of pipework which was the drivers side injector and live steam water feed valve. Now these are white metal castings and are reasonably crisp but they come with white metal pipework which is all over the place... not liking that at all I sever the pipes drill down into the casting and replace with 1.6mm brass wire bent then soldered in position. So that is what I had previously done without issue on the fireman's side but today was different because after I'd soldered the first item of pipework in place the live feed injector suddenly decided to disintegrate into tiny particles. For a short while I toyed with the idea of trying effect a repair then gave up as at best it would only have been a cobble up and potentially look awful, so I turned to Laurie Griffin Minatures for a lost wax replacement but couldn't find anything remotely suitable in either the LMS LNER or SR section. So now a quick scan on Google turned up the very cast item I wanted on a live steam site, cost £40 for the casting and scale unknown to me... but what it did offer up was this casting was fitted to Brits, 9F's, Standard class 4 75XXX locos and MANY GWR types. :scratchchin:

Lightbulb moment.... so a quick dash back to Laurie and hit the GWR button and there it was ... the very casting I need ... staring me in the face and all for £8 too.

Moral of the story lets not be too quick to put the GWR stuff down, now I'm feeling happy and work will resume when this item is delivered... in the mean time its fettle the other slide bar set and start on the frames.

For future reference Ragstone models do a fair few BR castings.

Oh yes Kimbo but this one has been pretty tame so far... in fairness I was asking a weak casting to do rather a lot Anyway the replacement lost wax one arrived this morning so that's a top of the list job now once I've prepped up the brake rigging.

Today I cracked on to complete the main frame chassis as far as could be done, the main motion shaft was added and so was the brake harnessing which I'd spent most of yesterday preparing. so this was the state of play earlier this afternoon.

I decided on a slightly different approach fitting the brake harnessing, with wheels in position I soldered each pair of brake hangers set against the wheels as a swinging unit then once the three sets of hangers were in place I added the pull rods alowing the whole assembly to swing forward and back... this makes painting easier and refitting the wheels again. I scratch made a swing linkage to the last cross beam which will fit to the white metal cast brake piston once the wheels are back in place, this will set the brake assembly at the right clearance from the wheel flanges.

As can be seen the chassis is quite a complex and impressive structure... I'll fit sanding gear later on after painting and once the wheels are back in place, experience tells me this is by far the easiest way to go about the job.

So after a jolly good wash down in hot water and scrubbing using Bar Keepers Friend I had a nice clean chassis free from dirt and in this heat 31C it didn't take long to dry, it was out with the etch primer and a good baking in the heat of the day. My purpose made paint extraction space is actually an old apple tree climbing frame which is a left over from the orchard which died out years ago... it still comes in quite handy from time to time.

Tomorrow I'll finish of making up the various motion assemblies and if time allows the new injector castings fro LGM arrived yesterday, if I get time to fit those then that will mean the loco body is also finished and ready for painting.

The chassis does look rather involved. Rock solid as well.

And here are the main frames just out of the paint shop having stood "cooking" in the late afternoon sun. 70010 Owen Glendower isn't going to be a pristine finish but will have a light overall weathered coating of work dust and soot however I'm drawing short of making this engine appear like a huge filthy lump of grease and coal dust.

Here is where we are this evening, thanks all for following and hope you enjoy these pictures of bench work progress.

If you mean the red it is over painted onto the black to simulate dark patchiness, tomorrow I'll dry brush more red tones to even things out a little then run some dull coat into the corners. A little tip here many folk paint their loco frames using Signal red colour, this is fine for some engines of pre nationalised era but for BR standards the spec was an orange red vermilion Buffer Beam Red which was lighter in hue than Signal Red,

Nope I'll mask off with Tamiya when I do the body ... Loco Green then dull black. Masking tape is way too expensive to waste on frames and I do live in Yorkshire which has a baring effect on keeping costs down. :avatar:

It's moved on a touch more since then Toto, the frames were re wheeled with rods attached then each slide bar was soldered onto the motion bracket and tested for clearances... it was the second slide bar (this side showing) which gave a bit of trouble needing a shim to pack it down a touch. I think the fabricated motion bracket on that side was a little out of position, anyway I've now got free rotation and clearance between the forward crankpin and con rod movement is fine... it just needs a bit of tidying up t remove solder spill.

The fine pipework below the whistle casting and handrail leading below to the mechanical lubricator and in the other direction behind the deflector is something I scratched from 0.4mm brass wire and was not provided in the kit. The tiny three way pipe coupling was copied from pictures of the real thing and made using various diameters of micro tube to create the required shape, it all adds to the overall look which hopefully will pass muster... well it will probably once I've fitted the Wakefield oil feed lubricators on their respective platforms below the running footplate.

And here is the machine reassembled abate again only temporary but now I've proved the motion rotates without an flat spots I'll fit the motor I intended for this loco some time back. Its a nice sturdy JH with Ron Chaplin double reduction box... it may be it is too big for the space but we will see.

The live steam injector casting arrived from Laurie and once plumbed up into place on its little carrier bracket that will be the body finished... only problem now is I've run out of grey primer. Anyway here is 70010 Owen Glendower heading for the final leg of the build.
