Looking good Dave....don't forget, you cannot have any beach goers there until the isolation is over.

    Cheers

    and happy modelling

As usual operations have been getting in the way of real progress. However at the end of Saturday I packed the stock away and got on with some ballasting in the Mowarra Junction area as the new layout has been running well over the past few weeks. I can't say ballasting is my favourite job - marginally above soldering - but it has to be done. Trouble is I am running out of glue so did nto get quite as far as I wanted and need to wait for supplies.

Some new second-hand shinies (is that an oxymoron?) arrived from Casula Hobbies this week and I now have 3 x Victorian Blue carriages. To celebrate the fact of the first service from the Orbost line through to Mowarra Docks I ran them over the bridge end which has always been a freight only line. The idea is they meet a weekly New Zealand ferry but also allows any Victorians who work in the Mowarra area a direct rail link. May terminate at Wallace Creek (which is meant to be just north of the border) and have a connecting NSW service instead. What with a Budd railcar arriving soon as well the passenger side has come on leaps and bounds.
Today Sunday is cold- 15 degrees cooler than yesterday so its back to the house. I have been modelling a small headland for one end of the beach (adjacent to the container siding at Mowarra), gave a light coating of dust wash to a couple of horse vans (that don't really fit in with the rest of the model but I liked them (and they were cheap)). Oh yes and I painted a very crude platform (I made for my first UK layout) that will service the PW depot at Mowarra as well.

The new layout has worked well from an operational sense as I realised I was spending more time operating at Mowarra rather than Wallace creek. Need to invent some operation rules and think about where the signals (best not talk about signals) would be to add to the fun. Have been solving a few kadee issues and swapping out a number that have no spring.

Its my birthday in early June (no that's not a hint) and Mrs Wells and the now grown up Wells children have ordered me some items from Walker Models namely the low relief pub for Wallace Creek, a low relief station building for Mowarra Junction and a signal box for Wallace Creek. Forgot to take any photos of the new stock so here is 8035 heading northward with a passenger train at the back of the beach section (as its now known).
    All the best

    Dave

A large slice of humble pie is being consumed by yours truly tonight. Some of you may recall I have been following an overpriced 48 Class on e-bay. As it was UK based I was reasonably confident it would come down in price to something I was willing to pay, which in the case of an early Powerline 48 class was around £70. Anyway said loco was first listed at £165 ($330) and over the months came down and stalled at £145 ($290). The seller held his nerve and suddenly bang! It went. So I am now thinking if I list one of my old 48s mine and wait patiently I'll get £145 and then be able to afford a more modern model.
Meanwhile I doff my imaginary hat to the seller, one Sir Nigel Gresley (wondered what he was up to these days) who clearly knows how to sell. Now must get around to finishing that humble pie. D

I wouldn't feel bad about that at all, sometime things go for really silly prices. For example I am watching (more for curiosity as I don't want it) a Lima 3801, which needs a bit of work and it is currently about $310 with a couple of days to go. There is a new version of this loco coming (not sure yet exactly when) where for about the price the second hand Lima one is they should sell a brand new one, with most of the shortcomings of the Lima model not present. Some people just can't wait.
Was it a early power bogie Powerline 48? I see them going for over $100 every so often, but in my opinion that is overpriced.

Speaking of 3801, I had just got into bed last night when I heard a distinctive whistle. Had a quick check of a transport app and a NSW Facebook group, and sure enough, they were testing 3801 on Cowan Bank, a test all locos returning to service have to do. It was cold, it was late, so unfortunately I stayed in bed.
    Cheers

Wow...for that price you could have secured a brand new Auscision!

    WALLACE CREEK FESTIVAL OF PIES

One of the most exciting and keenly anticipated events in the Wallace Creek social calendar is the Wallace Creek Festival of Pies also known as the Wallace Creek Pie Festival. Visitors from all over New South Wales and Victoria arrive by bus, car and of course special train to take part in a day long celebration of all things pie.

Central to this is of course the legendary Lance’s Pies factory whose famous green doors are flung open so visitors can savour the magic that goes into making these delicacies that are enjoyed by Australians throughout the world. Marvel at the special selection techniques that goes into the Gristler and learn the secrets of Lances Magic Greyvy (T). Learn how every Australian soldier at Gallipolli went ashore with a canned pie to throw at this Turkish enemy and how the enemy, overwhelmed with kindness, threw them straight back.

At every Festival of Pies a new theme pie is announced for the coming year and this year aghast crowds (should that be agog?- Ed) learned the minced Dingo Pie would be setting a new standard in Lance’s Pie offerings.

Luckily for the gunzels who steered well clear of the pie related celebrations (ensuring their survival) there has been some new rolling stock on the workings this year. Whilst NSW stock has formed the usual workings, a short Victorian rake of three carriages was worked in from the Orbost line by B69. Another sighting was of Budd Railcar still in Australian National Colours which has since been put to work on the new Wallace Creek to Mowarra Dock shuttle service. As a result of an issue at Kiama a Per Way MHO was unusually inserted into a special train. 20200530_124014.jpg 20200530_124243.jpg

Special permission is given by the operations department at this time and carriages are stabled in the goods yard, headshunt and central road so freight operations (reduced on a Saturday) can continue operating.

Finally as the sun goes down, and the trains depart Wallace Creek with returning pie fans, operating authorities puzzle over why return loading is 47% less than inwards trains. Must be pie fans wanting to stay on for even more savoury goodness especially Lance’s “Klingon Blood Pie” (2019s pie of the year).

Now listen here Dave as the answer is quite obvious.

The remaining dingoes were set free by the animal rights activists and they very quickly turned their attention to the spectators, lustily devouring the outstanding 53 % of patrons as retribution. It is hoped that next years festival will carry a more conciliatory theme.

    Cheers

I completed the low relief station building Stuart Walker kit and placed it on the layout. What I had not considered was the vertical clearance and the horns on first train through (an oil train hauled by G513) promptly collided with the overhang. A piece of scrap balsa raised the platform and building but next train through was the Budd which has a high exhaust track, further collided with the structure. Not great at building kits but found this quite a good one for my limited skills. Progress shot below - must take one of the completed job.
Options - slew recently ballasted track outwards (towards operator), raise building further, cut back awning, hmmm.

Meanwhile its cold today so started work on the Australia Railway Hotel low relief kit. Coming on well although one of the decorative window inserts appears to have some sort of "gymnastics display"....?:scratchchin: Selina has painted me a street scene to try and Australianise that corner of the layout which I will fit later this week replacing the very faded blue sky. 20200601_094644.jpg

Decided to try and fit a spring to a de-springed No5 Kadee. 20 minutes later I gave up. Life is too short.

Its been a while since I posted, mainly due to the fact I have been facing redundancy and its been a worrying time (on top of the other Covid stuff). A supportive wife and being able to retreat to the railway have got me through this time and luckily I made the retained cut (for now). To celebrate, some new shinies are on order from trainworld in Melbourne and then unusually there are a number of wagons that have become available in the UK and should arrive during this week.
The locos have been divided into 70s/80s and 90+00s pools to try and move towards more period focussed operation and the rolling stock deployed as best I can. Some of the rolling stock on order is for the modern period which has several locos but not that much stock.
I seem to take a much more pro-active role in repairs during running sessions now - a sign of confidence perhaps? However small the fault stock used to get put aside but now a fair number of running repair are carried out in the session (broken Kadee springs seems to be a problem). Before they would all pile up in the repairs box.
I have been experimenting with back scenes (or parts of) by printing some street scenes off the internet and seeing how they look placed in between low relief buildings. Still needs some work but there are a couple of locations where that might just work. Also made some home made signs for the various warehouse buildings around the layout including (of course) Lance's Pies and the "Festers Lager - so bad we sent it to Britain sign" has been replaced by one extolling the virtues of Victoria Bitter.
There is still a bit of ballasting to do but otherwise its looking pretty complete on that front.

That amount of pain is enough to make me start modelling the UK scene! Added around $25 per item.

Never!...but you could make a token gesture by including the Flying Scotsman in your collection as it was after all a temporary Australian during the Bi Centennial.

I think you had a GWR Castle over there for a while. Unfortunately Wallace Creek is too much of a rural backwater for such locomotive royalty as the Flying Scotsman. Why just the other day a driver locked down an NR class locomotive returning next morning to find it's wheels and bogies missing with the body supported by piles of bricks (which Police believe was the Chapel of Infernal Damnation which coincidentally was demolished by persons unknown that very night). Anyone with any information (or who just fancies a chat) is asked to ring Chief of Police, Rob Banks.
In other news the shinies arrived today.

That's an attractive livery on my second favourite type of Aussie engine. I am now on a shinies ban after Mrs W found the receipt......:(

And suddenly the end of another operating year is upon me as the days get colder. Its generally been a good season with all kadee operation definitely being a step in the right direction and the new more modern stock adding more variety to the 90s/00s operations scenario. Today though I had all my British stock out and the reason for this is Selina (Mrs Wells to you lot) has granted me permission for an 8x1' layout inside - rather than the temporary and unreliable layouts I have had. There are things to do before that happens and I can't see it getting started until the Xmas break. So I had the UK stock out to see if that was what I wanted to build it around which is a run down branch line in east Anglia serving a dock/industrial area c 1970s (BR BLue)

I did however briefly look at the Minories "classic layout" to see if I could do something with that. I concluded no - not quite what I wanted but did play with a third line into the station and a mid platform stabling road. I'd probably tidy up the parcels area (bottom right) and sort the access to the stabling road (which) might see the length of the two bottom platforms shrunk slightly.

Problems with my camera (died) and phone (the wire that links it to the computer died) meant most photos have gone on Facebook. But the latter problem has been solved so here are a couple including the new VB advert

Looks like you will have a suitable project to keep you occupied during the colder months ahead! Also I see from a Hattons advert that you will at last be able to access an Australian loco locally and cheaper than what it will be available for here? I think the 38 class plus passenger coaches will look great on Wallace Creek.

    Cheers

    and happy modelling
