    Thanks Gents,

I must admit doing the backhead is one of my favourite aspects of the build.

Beautiful work Rob. I’m looking forward to getting my 8F started as this is the one assembly I like to spend some time on.

    Thanks Kim,

It’s the one from Tower Models Rob, the DJH version.
You will have to get your MOK one finished now

It'll be good to see a comparison between the various manufacturers products. I have the MOK version and I'm sure a David Andrew's version as well. It looks like this kit has been well covered.

It's finally staring to look like a streamlined Coronation. Yesterday saw the completion of one of the most difficult bits of the build in my opinion and a lesson that I learned from the last one.

    What am I talking about?

The front boiler band, strangely it's the only one that you have to fit as part of the build, the rest being cast as part of the casing.

Challengingly, this one has to be bent and shaped in several different planes to get it to sit down flush as it passes over the front of the loco and then of course you have to solder it to a great lump of whitemetal (or I suppose you could glue it, but that's a bit of an anathema to me:headbanger:).

Also fitted but not photographed yet is the base for the cab floor. The next job is the stainless steel beading that runs along the bottom of the valences. Or in the kit's case it's nickel but it will look like steel.

    Looking very nice Rob.

I can see what you mean about that boiler band. A tricky bit of forming to get right however you have managed I'd admirably.

    Lovely stuff.

The poor weather here gave me the opportunity for a good day at the bench yesterday so I made good progress with the body details.

The first job was the stainless steel trim that runs along the bottom of the valance at each side.

Each side is in three pieces made more challenging by the casting attached to the side valance which you have to pass the strip over. Again as they go along they need to be bent in several planes but not in my view as difficult to achieve as the front boiler band.

Then it was making up the front steps and fitting them and other details. Still to go on the front are small semi circular hand rails and lamp irons. To be fair they take very little fitting but drill the holes in the thick pewter casting is a pain because I have to drill them by hand as experience has shown that trying to use a power drill is just asking for broken and difficult to remove drill bits.

I am still beavering away on the Coronation and today saw the tender complete. Some of the bit's are just placed for the photos.

Still to fit on the body are handrails and the sandbox fillers and the chassis mounting blocks.

Hopefully they will be completed tomorrow.

Almost there with the body now, then I just need to reassemble and test it. I bought a few metres of second hand track from ebay to make a test curve to ensure that it goes around a 6' curve okay without shorting.

Nothing like pushing it to the wire competition wise is there...

I know what you mean Rob... my cab glazing took an age today and the backhead is now dressed ... but it ain't as detailed as yours not by a country mile. I bet the Duchess weighs a ton with that white metal body.

Sadly I have had to backtrack a bit in the limited modelling time available this week - when I really needed the time Chris took a bit of a tumble and has been laid up with a swollen knee on one leg and a twisted ankle on the other which has meant that I have been promoted to head cook and bottle washer until she's mobile again.

Getting back to where I had to backtrack, while studying photos of King George the VI I noted that it and the other red Streamliners had an extra step at the front below the drawhook while I had fitted the casting so that it only had one step so I had to take it of and re-drill the holes at a different angle to get the second step.

That fix was relatively easy, the more difficult to resolve has been the cab internals. I have been concerned for a while that the removable cab floor while perfect for fitting the backhead etc. once painted, the brackets which hold the seats and doors was very flimsy and would be prone to damage.

I had resolved that I would have to remove them from the cab floor and attach them to the back of the cab walls and drag beam to give them something solid to attach to when I turned my attention to how I might get the back head in after painting if I did so. I am glad I did because I discovered that the backhead is too tall to fit in with the cab floor in place. I have managed to relocate one of the pipes so that it sits a little lower but I still need to find about 0.5mm clearance and I have also had to remove the reverser and locker from the other side of the backhead so I need to give consideration as to how best to reattach those after painting too.

On the plus side I did manage to get a test track board with both 6' curve and a 5' curve on for testing locos before delivery. The 6' will be needed for KGVI and the 5' for the J6 in the near future.

So from a competition point of view I didn't get it over the line before the end but from a delivery point of view I still have a couple of weeks and the competition has aided in giving me another bit of impetus to make progress on it. I will keep updating this thread for completeness sake as I get there with it.

A good session at the bench yesterday saw the hurdle of getting the back head in overcome. In the end I soldered in the cab floor, and soldered the seat/door support framework to the cabsides. that in itself brought it's own problem. getting them to stick to the cabside even when using 100 degree solder was a job and a half given the thickness of the body casting.

Despite using a heat sink on the whitemetal seats I managed to melt one of them and had to scratch a new one from some thick brass strip. You can just see the difference in material of the two seats below.

The build is essentially finished as far as construction goes. I just need to fit the brass cab roof to the body casting and position the cast blocks that hold the body and chassis together.

On the chassis there is only the reversing rod and speedo to fit but that will be after I assemble and test run it. My customer is currently in lockdown again so it may be some time before he collects it to take on to the painter.

Does this mean we won’t see the finished article of going else where for painting? :(

Does look very nice Rob. A lot of similar cab detailing to the 8F as well. I had the same issue with the cab doors, there’s not a lot to solder to. I knocked them after priming the loco and had to clean them up again and re fix, but this time I managed to do it with 179 solder.
Look forward to seeing her finished and painted up.
