So as the title say a new work shop area means new work bench.
So having moved House earlier in the year, my old workshop room needed relocating but as these things go the old furniture “Workbench” etc wasn’t really going to work in the space.

What to do I was getting frustrated working on a Small temporary old kitchen table in a corner of the sun room Tools and bit and pieces in storage tubs etc it just wasn’t a good way to work unpacking boxes or tubs To find the tools etc Then having to pack it away all way as wasn’t space To have stuff easily at hand :faint::faint:

I started looking at the used furniture places For suitable items but was having no luck.
The better half suggested Building our own set up from flat packs so a trip to the local Hardware shop (Bunnings) and the results way too expensive and dubious quality of flat pack rivets to hold draw slides to MDF even the display ones were failing :bleep6:
Only thing found suitable at Bunnings was solid timber bench tops. :scratchchin: They look good shame about the expensive and poor quality flat pack furniture.

:scratchchin:so online Search and IKEA’s range was looking good A trip to the Big smoke would be required to check these out for quality would be required but the price was about 1/2 the Bunnings options, but would that mean lower quality, Surely not this is Swedish design :avatar:and it’s Called Alex :scratchchin:

So a trip down to Ikea and Result :thumbs:lots of flat pack were obtained 160+ Kg’s Worth of Alex series flat packs.

Now to build this lot Ok it IKEA and people have always joked about IKEA flat packs but they all went together beautifully and quick.:tophat:

What did I go for, well a 2.2m main bench 2 sets of fixed draws one set of rolling draws with a high level 1.2m Secondary bench for working at whilst standing.
shelley also has a hobby space in this room and had the other wall in the room with a shorter main bench with one fixed draw set and a rolling draw set.

Also found at IKEA nice trays that are use for Draws, to sort items but also very helpful for sorting flat pack Hardware parts Makes the build easy when you know where all the parts are and they are easily selected.

Rolling draw sets make for extra bench space if required but lots of storage for DCC parts etc plus can be positioned anywhere I have one under the main bench with the top draw having one of the IKEA organisers trays in it for items that you need at hand etc

It’s getting there will never be this clean again
I add a ex NSWGR Passenger carriage compartment luggage rack and photos from these date back to 1935 going by the Chalked description on the Backs of the frames.

even has some space to set up Lizard Ridge and the display case for 1/32 scale rolling stock
This is lighted but I need to sort out the power supply’s For layout and display

‘So that’s what a clean work bench looks like) :avatar::avatar:

Very nice set up Chris, I’m sure those draws will be filled to the brim soon enough and the colour of the work top will take on a new appearance.

Looking good Chris - no excuse now

Pity Ikea is so far away for us, and with lock down may be a little awkward to justify to the Covid Ploice.
I'd need lots more drawers and cupboards - or maybe a bigger skip and throw some stuff out  :whatever: :giggle:

More room space in the first place would have been handy in my case. About 8 years ago, we had the flat roof of the kitchen extension (built for the previous owner of our bungalow) replaced, but knowing what I know now, I should have gone for a Dormer roof extension of the loft over the kitchen. That would have given me a loft room of 16ft 6in x 19ft instead of the 16ft 6in x 11ft I have now. Too late to start building at my age now, ain't hindsight a wonderful thing!
    Keith.

You'd need heavy duty Ikea storage because that big plaster of paris engine shed and turntable setup needs extra support and protection against damage, it cost Toto an arm and a leg and he won't be best please Dundee if anything bad happened to it whilst stored in your workshop. :avatar:

My new shed build has stalled as my van is still away for repair. Those Ikea units look good, I think when I have got it lined out and power in I will have a trip to my local "ish" shop and check them out!

    Cheers, Pete.

    Thanks for all the comments

it’s not so tidy Today Gormo, As have a huge loco on the bench for DCC install Making it look untidy, photo later

Other parts are getting a bit more organised.
Set of clear fronted storage trays mounted above the standing bench, with replacement motors and some speakers
A hook on the wall under The standing bench, to store the DCC test board with Sporg3 and ESU interface and simulator. Easy to unhook and use on the bench as needed.
Shelley picked up some larger tackle boxes form her work “Boating Camping fishing” -“BCF“ to tidy up the new speaker Location draw. And yes I do have a lot of speaker‘s, something for just about any DCC sound installation.
All those draws filling up fast.

On the new work bench things are getting done so much easier than on a temporary table with no space and tools in box’s that have to be unpacked and re packed to get tools as no space to have out.

photos below, innards of a model from Just one of last week O scale NSWGR 45 class By Auscission Models
2 45’s done now Only have one 45 to go, but that’s my own loco so it can wait.
But the ugly side of DCC wiring a model with 20+ LEDs to work from the Available functions And only 2 wire colours throughout. A circuit board made and quickly marked up so I know what interface wires go to where
Now all in speakers fitted and tested sound file built and uploaded.

    Hi Gary
    Thanks

I too have filled the Otto several times in the last few weeks getting rid of a lot of junk and odd storage containers etc
Sometimes I wonder :hammer:why I think I know what I’m doing, then someone reminds me that if I didn’t do it for them it won’t get done, :handshake: so I guess someone else seems to think I know what’s going on, it’s only really going on When the sound finally cones out And the wheels turn, confused yet, I am

I can say that this one In the photo O scale 45 class is now a runner and a sounder and it sound good, better do a video of it before it goes as it’s got a new and much improved Alco 251 recording in the sound file than what I had last week things are always evolving, one of the advantages of a decoder you do the sound file your self and up load is if a better sound recording Is available you can upload, It and your away with the latest not stuck with last years option
