Hi Richard - playing with Anyrail last night - looking at something like this. 8 x 1 likel.jpg
I'll be interested to see how many 38s in the UK they sell as there are not too many Aussie modellers over here. I know this is sacrilege and I will probably be tarred and feathered but not a great fan of the 38s - give me a good honest 36 any time.

    All the best

Design looks great....36 or 38? Can't make up my mind so I have settled the problem and have collected two of each over the years.

    Cheers

The first Australian activity of the new year took place yesterday. Following on from a wheel cleaning session on my UK stock, including some incredibly filthy wheels belonging to a recent e-bay purchase, I made a start on the Wallace Creek stock as well. As long as the cleaning fluid lasts (remembering we're all locked down here) the aim is to get this finished by the start of the operating season (weather dependent hopefully late March).

For the powered vehicles I use a version of the wheel cleaner Gormo built and unpowered ones are placed on a track with some tough clean kitchen roll and rolled over until clean.

    Hi Dave

Do you have a Dremel ? With a tiny brush attachment, I can fly through rolling stock wheel cleaning in no time. Just hold one wheel of the axle gently, apply the brush to the other wheel and allow to rotate slowly. Wheels will shine like new in no time.

If you are using the Dremel with a wire brush, please wear some safety glasses as sometimes the little wires come out at speed.
Same applies to mini disks.......sometimes they shatter.......even mini tools can hurt you.

I usually use slaters track cleaner and soak a piece of Jay cloth or thick kitchen paper put across a section of track then run the wheel over it. This is quite good for removing some and I am quite good at keeping the track clean anyway. Any particularly stubborn bits are cleaned with a cotton bud but the aforementioned e bay purchase would have benefitted from the dremmel approach which I had never considered.

The brush wheels I use are not the wire ones but some sort of synthetic but as Gormo quite rightly points out anything like this I always use safety glasses.

Crikey I didn't realise your mojo had gone dormant. Dr Dave says go to the garage, get 4 x48 lashed up and run a grainie. Bit difficult for me to make a house call just now.

I think we all go through a pause at some stage when other issues intrude. But then everything falls into perspective and off we go again.

Well as Wallace Creek has stumbled back onto the website front page I thought I'd give you an update on my UK shunting layout. The kids bought me a couple of Speedlink (1980s freight distribution network) at Xmas and since then I have bought some second hand wagons from E-bay so now have a mixed train containing 4 different wagon types which look good behind the resident Bachmann 08 shunter. They also got me the Oxford Rail warwell wagon and I can now run trains from three different decades - 1960s with a PLA shunter (Oxford Rail) 1970s with an 04 shunter ( Hornby) and the 1980s. I also have the Hornby Railroad bagnall which is a great cheap model and the Hornby Sentinel. Keep considering a DMU for the mostly disused platform (a 105 in blue would be my choice) but there are other priorities (he said eyeing the Casula Rail and Train World websites in Australia).

Well Dave that is a good oral summary of the additions, but really could you let us have some nice pics so we can all get a good look.

Sadly the camera has packed up and I cannot transfer phone photos to this computer (that lead does not work). I may try and put a few on the facebook feed later on.

Well things are warming up - start of the WC operating season garage clear out scheduled for next weekend. Have also acquired my 4th Victorian T Class no T-364 in V-line livery which along with 4017 will be doing the opening honours (after cleaning). D

A brave man to tackle the dreaded garage clean up. You could find anything but at least it will not be red backs.

    Cheers

So a first - operations commenced 25th February this year and the layout is up and running. Probably the earliest ever start to a season but I'm ot complaining. New locos T364 performed faultlessly but 4017 very unhappy with some of the curves at the garage end. There does not seem much sideways movement on them compared to other locos. Has anyone else had this problem.

That aside it s an absolutely phenomenal looking engine. I will post some photos in the next day or two on the Facebook thread.

    Hi Dave

I presume it is a Eureka 40 class and not one of the earlier Athearn conversions. The problem can be caused by the use of an incorrect gauge wire from the bogies up to the circuit board. Remove them and replace with much lighter gauge cables making sure you provide plenty of slack in the new cables. This will allow the bogie to move freely and should solve your problem. I understand that not all 40s had this problem, only the ones that went via the assembly idiot who used the wrong gauge wire. While you have the bogies and side frames off, you might as well blacken the wheels if you have not already done so.

    Hope this helps

Well I hope it gets warm soon. A double jumper session of about four hours yesterday with several hand warming cups of tea was well worth it and a wide range of stock and trains was run. The layout has survived the winter well mainly I think because I forbade the dumping of stuff on it by other family members and they actually took notice. One pair of yard points needs replacement and as soon as Monkbar Models opens I will go and get some replacements. At the moment I am in operating mode and any improvements to Wallace Creek are on hold. Part of the reason for this is operating is good for my mental health and the last few months have been difficult both at work and home. My small internal Creekmouth layout is a god send and many thanks to Mrs Wells for conceding some indoor house space for that. It is a limited shunting layout though and having the bigger Wallace Creek line and being able to watch a train proceeding around the circuit at a slowish speed or undertaking complex shunting operations at the lowest speed possible all help me escape to my little corner of Australia.

I have another new arrival in the shape of 4498 which is a Trainorama 44 Class model. Up to this point I have had a number of the old Lima 44s but these are showing their age (low speed running for instance is getting difficult). The Powerline first generation 48s are also not what they were - several of them don't seem to have the pulling power they did but they still do useful work on the local Mowarra Junction to Wallace Creek trips.

It may be time to upgrade to some later models and I'd appreciate any thoughts readers may have on some of the newer versions on the market. Brunel Hobbies have some available for $295 and Tuscan liveried 4803 (which I cabbed on my only visit to Goulburn roundhouse over 10 years ago) is looking very very tempting.

As you are aware Dave, the earlier first run of 44 Class suffered from split gears, albeit after many hours of running. I have a first run 44 Class, 48 and 49. I don't run my Aussie locos enough to the point where breakage is possible. I think my 44 has only had approximately 1.5 hours of running, if that. Spare gears are available, made from better quality materials that don't crack. If I remember correctly, Australian Modeller stock these, as would Casula Hobbies.

From what I have read about the latest models (44s), they are pretty good runners and I haven't heard of any splitting gears yet. That's a good thing !

    Cheers, Gary.
