I've been using the 'Metal' version of 5 minute Araldite as opposed to the 'general' version and found it ok Pete. They've recently changed the pack design and I wonder if the formula has been changed also and the 'general' version is perhaps now less suited to bonding metals like brass/white metal. The price has certainly gone up in recent months too!

I think the backhead is a Laurie Griffen one, though I can't remember where I got it from :whatever:

Slowly but surely I'm getting there. Chimney fitted, smokebox dart too. I've also put the boiler bands on, if I had thought the build through, I should have put them on in brass. I've actually used strips of sticky label, to save them from getting damaged when I clean up I've painted them with clear enamel lacquer. I'm leaving them to dry overnight and then give them a second coat. Lastly I have glued some Grandtline plastic bolts on my buffers which I found the easiest method, I did try Robs method of filing my own bolt heads from brass bar but I couldn't hold them to solder them on, my hands don't always do what I want when the shakes start.

Forgot to mention, I've rolled the cab roof using my multi tool. Its come out nicely, still needs finishing off, it's just plonked on for now.

    Cheers for now, Pete.

I've virtually finished the back head, just some pipework to complete but I can't do that until I've made the two lockers and reverser on the inner cab front. I found my photos for the cab inner fittings, I'm just using them as a rough guide as they won't be seen from the operating distance.
Anyway a couple of photos, my apologies for the poor focus on them, I used my new camera, I've yet to work out the workings of it yet. DSCI0034.JPG

    DSCI0035.JPG

Anyway that is as far as I got today, hopefully more progress tomorrow, SWMBO will no doubt have plans for me.........

    Cheers, Pete.

looking good. as regards the photo it looks like you got closer to the backhead than the lense is capable of focusing to. if your camera has a macro setting id try that next time. If not, standing further away and zooming in and/or cropping the picture should bring it into focus and make it fill the frame

I've given the backhead a quick waft over with primer, it does look good to me.

    Before.
    And after.

Tomorrow I will be mostly spraying it black.

    Cheers, Pete.

The backhead is still in primer but I have got on with some detailing work.
I ordered some parts from Andy Beaton, Ragstone Models. Most but not all arrived very promptly but enough that I could crack on with cab detailing. I was going to make my own reverser but for a fiver...
    DSCI0038.JPG

    Sorry for the poor photo.
    DSCI0041.JPG

    DSCI0043.JPG

And fixed to the plasticard base but not fixed in the cab, still to be painted.
    DSCI0047.JPG

I also managed to get round to some of the other detail parts, the balance pipes on the tank tops, the filler lids and the, I suppose, the vent pipes though I forgot to take a photo of those.
    DSCI0048.JPG

Starting to look like a loco now.
    DSCI0044.JPG

I had to borrow the tank vents from my other kit, I will get some more or make them, but while furtling about in the other kit box I noticed something, or rather didn't, there's no footplate, looks like I will have to make my own!

    Anyway, thats it for now.

    Cheers, Pete.

Pete I really like the detailing on the inside of the cab and your build of the loco is looking fine.

I've been working on the coal bunker bulk head, there wasn't one in the kit of parts so I've had to make my own.
I had some brass sheet in stock so I cut out a rectangle to fit the space then cut out where the access hole is. The top of the opening has radiused top corners so I drilled two holes and cut it out.
I had also bought some hand brake standards and the original had a cutout for the brake so I had to cut that out too.
I was going to glue that in but decided to have a go at white metal to brass soldering, for a first go I think I've done quite well.
I thought I had taken a photo of the brake standard in place but I will have to post that up later. The job of fitting the bunker wall was a PITA as to get it to fit I had to chop out part of the original wall while it was still in situ, much grinding and chuntering I eventually got the new wall to fit.
Anyway, I will crack on with it tomorrow hopefully, depends on what time the governor wants picking up.

    Cheers, Pete.

    Hi Pete,

Nicely done, having looked at the first photo I wondered why you had cut your square from the middle of the sheet, it took a look at the other photos t make me twig that the whole piece was your square, DOH!!!

A tip for the future which might save you a little bit of pain when soldering whitemetal to brass.

Tin the brass with 145 first, a very thin coat from an almost dry iron with plenty of flux is all that's needed. Then making sure that your whitemetal is clean (I always give whitemetal a thorough scrub with a brass wire brush immediately before soldering it) you will find that the low melt solder flows nicely and sticks to both surfaces with ease

Thanks Rob, I did tin the brass first with a thin coat of normal solder, the low temp solder I've got is quite thick and hard. I tried cutting small pieces with my Stanley knife but I really struggled so I used my side cutters which worked but I finished up with larger lumps. It's not a problem as the rear of the wall will be hidden with coal load.

    Cheers, Pete.

looking good. The newer ace version has the bulkhead but does not include the recess for the handbrake. Ive not yet managed to find a photo of the cab interior and the preserved one is a later batch with a different reverser etc to the one i am building, so theres a lot of guesswork involved on mine.
