As many will know Slaters do a really nice casting for a brake van stove. Th problem with them is tht they are based on an LMS(Midland?) design and although I have used them myself on other builds I have always hoped that someone would do an LNER version.

For this build having got a drawing for the stove, (thanks Dave) I thought I would have a bash at making one.

I am quite pleased with the results and I should have taken a shot with a 5p piece to show how big it isn't...

I will have to straighten the jaunty chimny angle before final fitting though

Finally a couple more shots of the interior as it is at the moment.

Very nice Rob. The brake standard and stove are fantastic add ons. Wish I could produce to this quality. Something to aspire to.

    Excellent.

The inside of that brake van is fitted out better than my workshop.

Very nice model, love the pad lock.

Did you not notice the guard's Swan Vestas matchbox Dundee ? Even the lid slides open to reveal loose matches.

Seriously Rob its absolutely fantastic and sends that bar up onto another lofty high. :tophat::tophat::tophat::tophat::tophat:

Great attention to detailing again Rob.
I used the Slaters casting on a 6 wheeled SR/BR brake van when detailing the inside. Went a bit mad with it and fitted a flickering lamp inside it

    Thanks Paul,
I try to raise my personal bar with each successive build because it's the building where I get my enjoyment. Unlike others whose main aim is a layout or running what they build I tend to do very little running of them once built. I just move on and build something else...
and hope that in doing so it might inspire others to do likewise.

    Hi Kim,

I must confess to doing similar with an LMS Period I full brake, I built a full interior in brass and fitted flicker free lights to it. My good lady tooled me some small pieces of leather to fit on the guards cushions by the duckets too.

Crazy, but like most detailing inside wagons, coaches and locomotives that can’t really only be seen with a close up photo or a roof removed, you know it should be there and modelled and probably couldn’t live with yourself and leave it off.

I also think that the more you build the more you tend to model and detail, if that makes sense. We can all place an item on the layout and be happy with it but then later on you look at it and have to add more detailing, like weathering, lamps, people etc. I’ve been looking at vehicles modelled and how modellers have added tax discs to screens, folded, unfolded news papers on dash boards or passenger seats..is this not why we enjoy the Hobby so much ?

It is indeed, the thing that I love about modelling railways is that there is something for lots of different interests. You can build trackwork, signals, scenery, rolling stock, locos etc. Or you can buy rtr and ready made buildings etc. and play trains. Or a combination of both to suit your needs and what ever 'you' get pleasure from.

My order from Metalsmith arrived this week so I moved back onto the Slaters brake van build.

The order from Metalsmith was chiefly for 4mm x 2mm angle which I have used to make replacement stepboards in brass.

The reasons for this are twofold, they will be more resilient to handling and I can solder them to the cast brass stepboard supports provided in the kit.

Conversely I have swapped the cast brass buffer stocks in the kit for some spare Parkside ones of the same style which I can glue more easily to the plastic headstocks.

I aslo cut out and cleaned up the axles boxes and springs ready for fitting and ran in to a little problem.

I had previously fitted some triangular (well almost) etched corner plates to the underside of the headstock/solebars. as you can see from the photos these now prevent the spring hangers from sitting flat under the sole bars. A look at the GA reveals that the spring hangers have been cut to allow the plates to be fitted but I feel that I may have fitted them in the wrong orientation and plan to remove one of them to check how it fits with the plate turned through 45 degrees.

    Splendid work Rob.
Reminds me of when we took the brake van to Oakamoor yard when we were clearing it in early 1997.. we had the stove well glowing when we left it to do the work knowing we would have a warm van to return to...

what we didn’t think about was the plastic bucket the rest of the coal was stored in on the opposite side of the van floor.. when we returned it had a nice melted V on the front where it had softened in the heat.:avatar:

You may recall my wish for an LNER brake standard? I have had the relevant drawings for some time and today I got side tracked into drawing one up.

I also intend to draw up one of the square based type and a stove.

    How are you making them?

if your drawing system can save as an STL file I’d happily try one on the 3D printer for you?

I had a spare half an hour or so this afternoon so I created a revised drawing to include the rectangular cover that many of the phots show on these brake standards.

Rob I have just caught up reading about the build of your 20 ton brake van. I think it will be a while before I get near your standard of kit building:avatar:
    Impressive work.

    Thanks Alfie,
I try to make each build better than the previous one. I don't always achieve it but I have fun trying.

It was very gently pointed out elsewhere that I had missed the bolt heads from around the base of the brake standard.

LNER Brake Standard with Wooden cover + bolt heads.JPG

I have just popped back and made a couple of amendments to the version without the wooden cover. which should make it easier to print and it now has the missing bolt heads.
