Couple of days of fettling has resulted in the door lock assembly’s with handles and some modified etching to form the ramp side strapping with part of the locking system drilled out. This will be a similar arrangement to the tube wagon I built with a small ring on some fine brass rod and a securing chain. The next big job is to see if I can build a locking system for the top two doors. Again nothing supplied on the etch so I may have to wait until I’ve built the WEP version and try and replicate it.
So for now I will leave this panel and work on the WEP version.

 

The big issue with the WEP version for this “conversion” is the etch is very thin. To cut out the three centre doors would leave a very thin piece of etch which would break off at the slightest of knocks. So using some square brass tubing I’m going to make a top and bottom frame. This will not only strengthen these weak strips (approx 1mm high) but allow a strong joint along the body side to join the two etched together.

Soldered up, it looks like it will work out well.

time to cut out the door assembly, again like the CPL version, this will be left as one assembly until all 8 hinge points have been soldered up

back to making the hinges, this time I’ve used a small diameter rod, so they come out a fraction over 1mm diameter.

Bottom hinges fixed in with a brass pin, soldered up on the inside.

Working doors…..hinges need cleaning up and the tabs filed back.

 

First side of the CPL version completed, now to replicate all the detailing on the working doors side.

A few long modelling sessions have moved this “little”project on….

CPL Panels are now all completed and have had a hot water wash ready for another clean up. I can then assemble the body together. The WEP body is 95% there but I’m waiting for some brass stand pipes, again I’ve washed it in hot water and will now clean this up and prime it.

So it’s time to add some interior detailing. The CPL model has all the doors working (on one side only) so this will require more detailing. There are two plain brass inner panels supplied in the etch , these will be soldered in to give some support to the sides and I can then add detailing to them.

I needed to make up one extra from plasticard to form the rear of the groom’s accommodation plus some overlays which needed to be scribed to show planking.

Next job is the main horse accomodation area to include a floor, and feed trough’s. A little bit of scratch building from plasticard and the use of some bolster wood to make the “cushions” seemed to be the best option

and then a dry fit to see how it shapes up to the photo I have showing the full interior detailing.

Next job will be to work out how the hinged panels work that seperate the horses………..
