Looking good mate. Slow and steady wins the race !

Can I recommend starting the scenery at the back of the layout and moving forward ? You don't want to accidentally spill glue etc on the work you have completed. ;)

Scenery is really where the fun begins as you have laid the track, wired it and had an ops session to make sure it all works. I enjoy the scenery work more than anything as it allows the creative juices to flow, allowing you to add all those little details that makes the scene believable !

    Cheers, Gary.

Haha...yeah looking forward to some colour...I was just messing around with the area and was keen to see what some grass would look like in front of the fence.

There is a 150mm section being added behind the tracks against the wall behind the timber industry to allow for some backscene. Mite think about some thin Masonite or MDF to cover the shelving runners and wall in the near future.

I am looking around for static grass machines...A good tax return may have me in the market for some toys over the next month:scratchchin:
Been building a loft bed for my oldest today and will be off to swift water rescue training tmoro in prep for the Avon Descent in August so may not get too much more done over the next few days.

Will leave yall with some pics of the layout to date... 20210710_194832.jpg 20210710_194844.jpg 20210710_194854.jpg 20210710_194937.jpg 20210710_194918.jpg

Not much on the layout this week...The wife has taken the youngest and bolted leaving me with the eldest to hang out with for 2 days...
We went out and got some more odds n ends to get his bed and gaming nook finished up a bit better. I spent a good part of the weekend painting his room and building him a loft style bed to free up space in the small room he has. He is super stoked and was nice enough to let me off the hook for a few hours.
I had purchased myself a 1977 Kalmar 15-1200 forklift by Kabri models so I dug it out and spent a couple of hours painting and assembling the kit...
    Pretty happy with the finished product. 20210714_143218.jpg 20210714_144515.jpg 20210714_151611.jpg 20210714_153448.jpg 20210714_160021.jpg

So after 2 weeks of progress in the train room it has happened...hes finally peeled his face away from the screens...curiosity has rekindled my eldest boys interest in my hobby...
Fences, fences ,fences and guess who popped in...this is Will, my eldest son.
We have been left unsupervised in the home as the wife and my other boy have headed north for a couple days.
He wants to reboot the module I made for him over a year ago. It was forgotten and left in the shed after he got his Xbox...no comment.

Some more pics of progress setting fences and gates in place...who knows...maybe another build thread in the mix.:scratchchin:

    This is coming along great.

The Walthers kits are excellent as well. I had a couple that I intended to try and adapt to work in with a OO scale layout that I was working on hit like most things..... never got around to it. They do offer a good selection of kits.

Looking forward to seeing things develop going forward.

    Cheers for now

    Toto

    Thanks Toto...
The Walthers kits are well made and easy to find around our parts and I find they can be easily modified. The young fella may be diverting Old Ply branch work time over to one of his projects a bit more now but I hope to keep something moving on this layout.

Speaking of progress...split up the last pieces of ply sheet left in my shed to extend the layout down to the next corner and space the existing module out from the wall...
Heaps more room for the backdrop and more industries.

    Update pics...

I also suited up the pint-size to put a lick of paint on his module...I reckon he will be putting track down in the morning. He wants it to be a Mars supply chain post colonisation.
It will end up being Inglenook puzzle with the colony supply docks making up most of the sidings. Will be interesting to see what his imagination brings.

    G'day all...
Hope your all good n well...time to get a bit more of an update up for you guys to poke a stick at...
I got hold of some weathering powders, unboxed an office kit and started to glue ballast to the layout...
Having some fun with the use of grout for granite road base and started planning the next module to house the timber trestle.

I'm not sure if I have mentioned this before but I will again if so...the layout is loosely based on the Molalla Branch out east of Portland Oregon...It is operated by the Oregon Pacific RR...most of the scenes are simplified versions that depict actual industries along the branchline. This is the actual scene of the Mollala trestle bridge I wish to represent.

This pic shows the 1953 rebuild of the Molalla River bridge after a great fire earlier in the year. These photos show the Southern Pacific crew replacing the burned out covered bridge with a new fully wood trestle structure that was likely only meant to be temporary. Info cut n paste from OPR website

With a little inspiration from the its great grandaddy, the massive Holcomb Trestle of the West Portland line below...

    Hope you enjoy the update...
    To be continued...

So I got up early to squeeze in some shed time as I was all reved up from browsing the net for bridges last night...
Found a square sheet of 12mm ply that was large enough to map out a profile that would pass for a small bridge module...this was a stroke of luck as I originally thought that the small off cut was actually only 9mm thick...I cut out an offset front and back profile to allowed a slight angle on the bridge after realising how I didn't really enjoy the look of any of the scenes that were parallel with the fascia.
Pine ply is glued with polyurethane and pinned for quick assembly.
The module is a bits and pieces build basically using every off cut I could find in the shed but still strong and perfect for the spot it sits in...the best part is I can easily move it outside fir pics or to do any messy work that's required.

    Here is the photo progress...

    20210724_103338.jpg 20210724_110924.jpg

Testing to see how the space works...

    20210724_113028.jpg

Adding the last few pieces to complete the modules basic framework...

    20210724_115817.jpg

The module installed in its final resting place...

    20210724_121545.jpg

I will have to say that this is as far as I can get for now...I will have to spend some time chasing down blocks of foam and abutment details to suit the project...
Time to get back to building kits and trying to complete the other end...

    Till next time...

GdY again...its been a week of chaos over here...kids back to school...blah blah blah...so not much play in the train room...I need to restock some paint supplies to finish a kit I have on the bench and need to think about the scenery (trees and ground cover) at the back of the layout.

On the flip side...not so layout related...I have been following up on the motive power post 1960s on the Molalka branch and decided to repaint one of my SW1s in Orange to match the local #100 they ran at the time...this will be another side project but here are some photos to give you an idea of the result I am looking for.

This is the unit that will be repainted...

    20210731_114648.jpg 20210731_114640.jpg

And these are the pics I sourced from the Molalla branch archives...

Looking forward to trying to match this rare lil critter to run on my layout.

Hope for more progress on the layout next week as I will be away this weekend.

    Stay tuned...to be continued!

Nice. I'll be looking forward to seeing your respray.

Don't you just love those tight radius curves in the industrial complex ! Something only a switcher could negotiate, possibly even the smaller Geeps.

You have certainly progressed with the bridge inclusion. That is a neat way of adding the valley to the scene. I'm guessing you have stocked up on polystyrene foam for the landscape. Also looking forward to see how you continue on with this scene.

Keep up the great work.:thumbs::thumbs:

    Cheers, Gary.

    Cheers peeps...

Regarding the SW1 respray...I have to move the bell and other obvious details including the twin headlamp with side lit number boards but the wasp pattern should be not to hard considering I have a black (fingers crossed once its stripped) base to start with.
The cab and hood on the Walthers units come clean off and will leave the foot plates (which are already black) not needing much attention.

Regarding the module progress...I need to continue with getting the roads finished and the crossings set in first. I am lacking paint so I am looking at purchasing a good acrylic set to add to my model work station tool box.

Reaching out to experience acrylic pain users...would be great to hear what kind of paint has been used in your past builds if anyone would be so kind to share a basic review of their paints for me. Thanks in advance.

Looking to the future...I will be needing to pick up a slab of 2inch pink insulation to stack into the bridge module for it to progress from where it is at the moment. There are other methods worth looking into as well that may well be just as effective such as utilizing some left over chicken wire that is in my shed over cardboard profiles and using the plaster skills I have acquired over the past 20 years to build a contour to match the bridge scene I wish to use.

Anyways enough chit chat for now...I wont be able to sleep tonight if I keep thinking about it like this...so much to do...best to just keep slowly moving through the scene i already have and work the rest out as it comes.

Thanks again for all the input...keep it coming...my modeling knowledge cup is barely a coffee stain in the bottom of the mug for now...lol...plenty room for learning new stuff.

    Re the paint :

I have been using Mr Hobby acrylics. They have water based (Aqueous), solvent based (Mr Colour)and Acrysion (fast drying) acrylic all with good flow, strong pigment colour and work well through an airbrush. They also have their own thinners available.

    https://www.mr-hobby.com/en/common/...ain/00/teaserItems1/0/linkList/00/link/Mr.pdf

Citadel paints are also very good. I use them mostly for quick paint jobs and weathering. The only thing with these paints is choosing the correct paint for the job... They have Base Paint, Shade Paint, Metallics, Contrast Paints, Dry Paints, Layering Paints, Technical Paints and Sprays (rattle cans)

https://citadelcolour.com/getting-started/ - Scroll through their page for more info.

Although I have not used them, SMS (Scale Modellers Supply) I believe are very good paints, airbrush ready and Ozzie owned !

    https://www.scalemodeller.com.au/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI87nB5LeZ8gIVVClyCh0d7wqGEAAYASAAEgIBUfD_BwE

Hopefully this will help you out...!

    Cheers, Gary.

    Thanks Gary...
I got sucked into a few kits from Frontline hobbies which got my base paint kit sorted with thinners and Acrylic colors and a paint brush kit to replace my age old brushes.
Nothing flash but it is a brand called Vallejo.
Also my Ion generator with Transformer came in the mail so the static grass machine will come together soon enough once I find the victim that will sit in as the mesh part of the tool. :hammer:
Won't be long before I am all stocked up to start knocking some buildings out and finishing then up nice and realistic like.:scratchchin:
Anyways...hope I can find what I need now amongst all the packages that are arriving soon...lol

In the mean time...here are more pics of the SW1 #100 at work on the East Portland branch...Enjoy
