This will be my first attempt at a railway static display. My modelling background used to be war gaming dioramas. I thought I would have a bash at producing something so I can show some of my O gauge wagons off. The display area is only going to be 200 x 200 millimetres. I think this is large enough for showing off single wagons. The base is scalemodelscenery which I think is ideal for a static display. The track I am using is Peco bullhead right-hand catch point, why you may ask. Simple answer is I just like the look of them. At the back of the display I will be adding a scenic background, this will have a sleeper type wood fence running along the full length. As with war gaming an assortment of different foliage and weathering will hopefully bring the whole scene alive.
Sounds like a plan Alfie , keep up the updates and I like the sound of war gaming techniques for ground cover . Cheers, Pete.
You guys who do war gaming produce some very well detailed dioramas. I'm looking forward to your small wagon diorama. Cheers, Gary.
Thank you for all the positive responses. I have added my first picture of the work I have done so far regarding my display. As you can see the track has been glued in place ready for weathering. For the sleepers I am going to use Vallejo black brown as this will capture the dirty look I want. I'm toying with the idea of what type of backscene I should use.
The initial base colours have been applied to the track. I love the Vallejo black brown colour as it looks so realistic on the sleepers, better than the shiny plastic. The rails have been rusted using Vallejo rust. These like I mentioned are just base colours. Once I have added the ballast I will continue using pastels and powders to bring out the rusty dirty look. Now for the backscene. I'm thinking off painting this and adding flowing fields and sky which will hopefully look ok.
I thought I would make a start on the back scene and came to the conclusion I would add a sky scene. I'm really pleased with the effect the sky gives.
While it's been warm today I have been making a small hillside that will run along the front of my display. Materials used to form the hillside is cardboard and paper mache. I am enjoying railway modelling, it's great to see something coming together.
I'm waiting for an order to arrive from 422 Modelmaking, as their railway sleeper fences and coal bunkers are nicely detailed resin pieces.
Happy New year to all on the forum. I have not spent A lot of time on the forum due to the rising covid infections and nursing patients back to health in ICU and working all through Christmas and New year. I'm planning to resume my O gauge diorama modelling this week as I'm having a week's holiday.
I take my hat off to you… my wife works on a stroke ward.. But you need relaxation time away from it all.. and modelling is a safe and relaxing pass time.. let’s have some progress
Hi Alfie, did the stuff you ordered form 422 Modelmaking arrive? I've had some of their wares and I'm very impressed with them! Pete.
