Morning I'm needing some guidance on what size ballast I should be using on O gauge track. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
There’s lots of options depending on the final result you want to achieve, I’ve found the best sized options as follows. 1)OO gauge ballast mixed with fine sand is a good option. General running lines with shoulders 2)Any of the medium mixed with fine shop bought ballasts will also give good results. General running lines , sidings. 3)Fine paving sand mixed with weathering powders. Sidings, industrial areas and engine shed sidings where only a small amount of visible sleeper is required. Lord Street depot was done with paving sand and black / white weathering powders, and the running loops used a mix of three woodland scenic ballasts in the med-fine range. As Kimbo says, it depends on what type of railway you want to portray. As you are using a trap point it would be a secondary line, a siding or something similar so I'd suggest a fine ballast, maybe N scale or sand. Pete.
50mm aggregate...is what I see...but I like what you guys are saying about siding and yard fines. Cheers Unit converter says... N... 0.3mm HO/OO... 0.6mm O... 1.1mm
I've used fine silica sand (used in fish tank filters), mixed with grout to simulate ash ballast often found in goods yards and some scottish stations - Perth - during the steam period. Paul
