Hi there. That's a nice touch! I came and checked on here to see if my registration has been approved, and saw this message.

Hopefully I'll get lots of help and advice, especially re DCC for 00 (I like the look of Digitrax stuff).

I'm back to model railways after a long lay off. As a child I ran 00 and N gauge with the help of my lovely later step-dad. My wife has authorised the use of a bedroom with a workable space of 10 feet by 8.5 feet, which I think is plenty big enough to do a decent 00 layout. It will take a bit of time before actually commencing, as the cost of getting the room is decorating and sorting two others!:(

Board layout I'll take my time with. Rectangular with a middle cut-out and a hinged part near the door is what I'll look at.

I'm looking to explore some Mac based track software so I can better visualise the space. I'm looking at a rectangular layout, with a fiddle yard on one long side, and some kind of station plus TMS on the other. I like the idea of a turntable as I'll be running steam, but what originally got me here was the comments by some re the issues they'd had with the Heljan TT. Very insightful.

Era-wise I'm drawn to the 50'-60's, as i can legitimately then run steam and diesel. Hatton's call this era 5? It will be either this or the blue BR era 6.

Components - I'd probably look at OO gauge and Peco code 100 track. N gauge is probably too small for me now. Another reason is I visited a lovely local model shop in Edwinstowe, to find the owner deals in 2nd hand/pre-loved stuff - some was in very good condition. I'm aware of the need to be careful when running older stock on the new Peco 75 track?

So, I'll have a mooch round and see what nuggets are already here for me to learn about.

Thanks again for the warm introduction.

    Cheers,

    Andy.

Welcome to Platform 1 Andy :welcome: I can't help you much with DCC (complete novice myself) but I am sure that there are lots of members who will offer help.

    Hi Andy

DCC is like any other project well worth the research, so you say you like Digitrax, now not wanting to sound dismissive, I'll ask you why ?.
As part of your research, ask yourself what exactly do you want to do with the layout, and the layout control.
I know this next bit is difficult, but try and get a feel of the handsets, are the ergonomics right for you, can you operate the handset one handed - handy if your trying to uncouple a wagon by hand.
Are the handsets easy to carry out programming tasks
    How many operators will you
    1. minimum to operate the layout
    2. maximum you want to accomodate running on the layout
Do you need the system to be able to grow, or will you just replace the whole lot if you wish to expand.
Are you wanting to use a computer - the answer is yes for for at locomotive management.

There's just a few questions to start off with - and we haven't even mentioned anything to do with a system, and yes you are buying into a system.
How are you're electronics and programming skills - as you can do a lot of diy stuff.

I can't help with Apple software for track design, but if you have access to a Windows

Hello Paul. Thank you for your very fair comments and questions.

To answer them (in no particular order):

I initially liked Digitrax having looked at its flexibility. I'm very open to other suggestions re control but I do want to control the train, not the track so to speak. DCC appeals in this regard. When the time gets near enough that I'm looking at getting started, I'll ask further on here and elsewhere.

I'll run the layout alone. It will be bedroom based. I'll look round for a local club to get involved in, of course. I'm minded to set the track and operating up to be as future proof as possible. I totally get there might be a likelihood I'll alter things at some stage.

I'm ok with computers and learning systems. I did that when getting into music production as a side hobby to learning piano (I still do this). Wiring and electrics I think I'll pick up(ouch) ok.

    Thanks again,

    Andy.

There are believers of most faiths of DCC within the forum - a broad church so to say. The debates on the which is best often fall along religious lines - it can get that bad.

There are some excellant comercial software systems available for managing your decoders, but my favourate is the Free and well supported JMRI
This software is available for Windows, Apple & Linux (x68 and arm - Rpi) and comes in 2 main parts (there are more modules) DecoderPro for managing er .... decoders and PanelPro for managing your layout. When you're ready for this just ask.

My self I belong to the NCE branch of the faith, I like the ergonomics of the handset, and the upgradeability - no part is redundant if and when my needs change. It's also easy to understand / program - instructions on screen are in plain English - I can't vouch for other languages.

Most manufacturers have thier manuals available to download, worth taking a look at.

And the question for electronics / programming skills - you can even build your own.

    Any questions just ask.

@paul_l Thanks again. I've just had a look at NCE via Digitrains website. I will come back here as and when I'm at the control stage.

I do need some track planning software. I have an iMac running their latest OS, so it would seem a shame not to use an app that works on here for track planning.

    This one looks ok. https://www.railmodeller.com/express-edition-en.html

It has Peco code 100 and 75 track listed, and can do multiple level stuff. £35.00. I'll have a further look, but this one looks promising.

I'm also looking for the old track maps of Mansfield Railway Station in the 50's. It had a TMD and goods yard back in the day, so it might prove the basis for some ideas.

Welcome to the forum from the East Midlands. Sounds like you are in the Mansfield area, several of us are fairly local to that including Andy Sollis in Sutton, Pete (Jakesdad) near Bolsover and myself in Morton (t'other side of Tibshelf) near Alfreton. I'm a Mac user although I don't have any track planning software, have done a fair bit of DCC (Lenz) including conversions on my stable of 125 '00' gauge loco's, but just starting on '0' gauge stuff now, and electrics are no problem as I'm a retired 'Sparks'. There will be plenty of help /advice available should you need it, enjoy the forum!
    Keith.
Incidentally, there is a local club in Sutton, by the Lammas Leisure Centre, think it's called the 'Elizabethan' or something similar, Andy will know as I think he was a member or considering it at one time.

@Keith M Thanks. I know @Andy_Sollis, as I used to work with him. Small world!

Would you know where to look for railway plans for older stations like Mansfield? I've had an initial look online, with no success.

    Cheers,

    Andy.

Welcome Andy! Long time no speak..
your in good and friendly hands here..

As to local plans, it’s not something I’ve come across much. You can find the odd track diagram, but surprisingly building plans seem to be one of the hardest things to find for our area? Unless, like with Mansfield Midland it’s been refurbished recently. (As part of the Robin Hood line… I never did work out why it was called Brunnels when it was a night club? Bad joke??)

anyway, not sure if anything in Mansfield Library?

    Hi Andy

Try looking at historical OS maps they be of help, some councils / local authorities hold copies. Also check planning requests, as they often have associated drawings and if they have been digitised should be reletively easy to get hold of.

    Hi Andy.
If you go to any exhibitions, then look out for a stall that sells reprinted old OS maps as Paul_l suggested. I got one for Chesterfield showing the 3 stations and branchlines to factories etc now long gone, think it was either at Doncaster or Newark exhibitions pre-Covid, alternatively maybe you can find some online or try your local library or a local history group.
    Keith.
    Addition...
Just looked at my reprint, it says-
Published by Alan Godfrey Maps, Prospect Business Park, Leadgate, Consett, DH8 7PW, www.alangodfreymaps.co.uk.
On the back of my print there's an index of available maps, 2 choices for Mansfield, Ref. 22.16, Mansfield West and Ref 23.13 Mansfield East, both 1914 dated so should be helpful, no mention of areas covered relative to the railways though, hope this helps,
    Cheers.

    Update.

I popped into Mansfield Library today. Didn’t have a lot of time(was on my lunch break), but will be calling back in the morning. They have plenty of stuff to look at, including photo’s and OS maps.

Looking at the plans will give me an idea of scale, in more ways than one. I came across the N gauge model of Shirebrook depot - that is a lovely piece of work. Not sure I could model in that detail/size, though.

Excellent link. I’ve ordered both maps of Mansfield. For the price it’s well worth it. Thank you for posting the link.
