Ah. We seem to have gone quiet on this again.. but no…

recently a photo came to light that jogged the memory of those who knew Leek station over 50 years ago.. the down side was that it revealed 3 windows on the back of the completed waiting room that Paul had done.

Not to worry, they are ones we had already done and it was a case of just set up on the printer and do a new run..

    F4E7D112-8DEB-48EC-B01A-A2BF1D0CB9BF.jpeg

Now the windows I designed from Paul’s artwork have an inside and outside. The inside is almost like a picture frame, where as the outside is decorative and has a small rebate for the glazing to sandwich between the two panels.

    internal frame.

The first batch failed.. half didn’t come out and the supports stuck to the frames. I have no idea why as everything worked better on the second run with some tweaked settings (thanks To Mossy and another friend on the printer forum)
    So we printed again.

these were much better but in my excitement with the print, I managed to break two of the window glazing bars

so a third reprint was called for….
821DAB67-0692-415F-85DB-7C998B1EA5E8.jpeg Much better and just awaiting a clean up and the UV light. Then off to Paul for fitting.

And the photo.. this came about whilst researching the lamps which is another ongoing topic.

    8EDF5FD1-23E4-4300-AF1C-484165C41B7F.jpeg

As can be made out, there are 3 double windows.. so Paul will be doing a little reworking of the rear of the waiting shelter .

whilst mentioning the lamps, we were recently given a copy of the below.

    C9895990-8383-4B14-88CF-866622B8BE73.jpeg

although this is not quite as it seems as the left hand posts don’t match with what we have in a number of photos. The photos show them to either be taller or a different design. The right hand wall mounted is only for one or two posts. So there is still some work to do, especially if I’m to get them to work!

Regarding the drawing of the NSR cast lamp posts we can see from pictures that these are platform lamp types being shorter as they are set back at the base of the embankment edge which follows the line of the northern extension on the Down platform... I'm pretty sure similar posts were located in the same way at Alsager. As Andy says we know the original posts located south of the road bridge on the main platform were somewhat taller and of a more slender design, this confirms that the north end platform new extensions beyond the road bridge received a newer design lamp post as part of the 1912 station rebuilding. Interestingly pictures dated 1950 showing a railtour special from Birmingham headed by an ex LNWR Coal tank loco show these lamps were fitted with NSR four sided lantern heads but a later picture showing Crab 42922 on an Ian Allen Potteries Express show the same lamps fitted with the W. Suggs & Co standard lamp head which is what we see described in the P.D Beddoe drawing above.

The number 3 Rudyard Down Starter signal was a mother of a signal at slightly over 42 feet in height, it was a lattice construction having co acting arms and a double ladder, it also had guy wires anchored in the deep embankment next to the Gas works and another set of wires straddling across onto the other embankment where another slightly shorter co acting signal was located. This other signal was Leek's Up Outer Home, both signals had to be in sight from the signal box in the yard and the bridge obscured the line of site for train crews... hence the lower co acting arms. Anyway we now have both signals made and looking very nice they are with servo motors and LED nanos fitted, they will have to wait until the next base carrier is made and this will be a longer job as this carries a pair of B9 trailing crossover points... these along with the plain line will be hand built by myself using ply sleepers.

Here is the top half of the Rudyard Down Starter.

And here is the lower half of the same signal... note the odd design ladder arrangement.

So moving on now to take a peek at the first section of hand built track now completed on its carrier board, the board inter;locks with other boards carrying their own respective scenery and items and this way a complete station layout can be put together with some effort I'll add. I need to refine the carrier board fixing arrangements where they connect onto the baseboard segments... anyway here is the both platform lines with the platform walls and coping stones. The station supply gas pipe can be seen strapped to the platform wall above the signal wire pulley run, in the six foot the monument pegs which form datum points to maintain the correct alignment within the curve and also the station cess drain covers can be seen...no detail being spared here.

Which leads us on very nicely to the bridge which is a rather large cast concrete post war affair... well the full size one is... the model one is made from laminate sheets of plasticard and so far measures 14" x 19" and I've yet to add the buttresses and plinth pillars along with the passenger access staircases.

And this is as far as I've got with making the A53 road bridge... the main centre section is a fine piece and once complete will be a bit of a focal point on the layout.

Obviously there is still a pile of work to do on this before its anything like complete but this would have been the view when standing on the Macclesfield platform and looking across to the Up platform for trains to Uttoxeter and Stoke and in the olden days to Waterhouses and the Manifold Valley narrow gauge line.

Another little fill in project ... if such a thing exists on the Leek Station model was the making of this sleeper built salt shed. This was a small structure only having a low height door, the hut stood in the coal yard and was tucked in behind the Down platform waiting shelter against the boundary fence to the Churnet Valley Hotel land. I made this hut from C&L Finescale ABS sleepers which I had in the spares box, it took around 40 to make this small hut.

Here we see where the salt hut was positioned against the waiting shelter, this is the building which Andy Sollis mentioned previously made some additional window units to go in the back wall... I have formulated a plan to undertake this careful modification. The other brick hut with the tall chimney was originally marked on an 1895 station plan as a PW office but I suspect it had later been used as a porters mess room.

Apologies about the washing hanging up but the sun was shining and I'd forgotten to bring the dried clothing in.

Some weeds added along the back of the salt hut... my memory of this hut was that it seemed a very damp and smelly place.

A bit of door detail... that's all for now, you have just seen two months worth of work... this will be a long project. Thanks for viewing.

Yes the full size salt shed had an aroma all of its own, its another bit of the station build now ticked off.

It always looks better than Peco, but takes an awfully lot longer to do.

Another item, which surprisingly survives in a private collection, is a large wooden sign from the foot of the stairs.

Very nice, the original looks to of been made up from left over letters. The "the, R's and G's" look to me to be a different style, and why in old signage were the "the" often smaller?

I suspect it's because all the letters will have been cut out by hand

Quite possibly, but, that doesn't account for the undernourished "the"s.

Some letters also appear to be upside down S’s.

I wonder if it was what was in the box at the time?

I wouldn't like to say, but the prototype and the model look great because of it.

...and I thought that the passenger would leave the station by the tracks where it should be, not the bridge ! :avatar::avatar:

    Cheers, Gary.
