I'll be posting up some photos of Highbridge tonight. It's a 60's based goods layout portraying the end of steam and introduction of diesel traction. It's really a practice ground to improve my modelling skills.

    More later

What's changed, everytime you got near your layout, you got way laid by either hattons web site, or starting a new layout

I just know that is gonna hurt

Things will get busier Mike. Of that I have no doubt. its just a bit strange for me at the moment. normally all I need to do is post. :avatar:that's the easy bit. however, this learning curve has been quite good fun and once some of the background stuff and the learning is out the way ....... thats exactly what I hope to get back to.:D

i think we'll need to work a rota system for a weekend off. maybe I'll get to feelthe pva running through my fingers again. I may even set up my separate monitor in the shed and post away whilst having breaks to actually do a bit.

I'll get in to a routine.

    cheers

    toto

    Paul,

i have fell out of love with Hattons at the moment ........ until the Dapol class 29 comes in.

    Well,

I'm being forced into a premature visit to B and Q in order to sort the shed door. So ...... Whilst I'm there I may as well get the timber required to deepen the Highbridge baseboards to give sufficient cover to take the Cobalts.

Once the frame is altered there will be a protective MDF board fixed to the underside to protect the gubbins. One of the ornamental versions as used for radiator covers.

I hope to do my shopping list on Boxing Day. I think I can salvage the original door frame and the inside face of the door. It's just the outside face and removal of the filler material which is wooden based hence the swelling.

The new outside face will be treated marine ply and the insulation filler will be of the Kingspan type board material.

I'll also add some more internal bracing etc and reinforced blocks from which to screw handles and gasps etc to.

    Sounds like a plan.

    Cheers

    Toto

Don't forget to seal the mdf - any varnish will do, or paint.

I'll look and see if b and q oblige.

Why not look out for MDF 'MR' ? The MR means 'moisture resistant'. The only downside is that you may not find it thinner than 16mm thick...

    Cheers, Gary.

    Hi Gary,

I think the 16mm stuff would add considerable weight to it. I already need to do a limbo under the R & GLR to get it in and out of the shed.

It's coming down cats and dogs here today. I'll visit b and q but it will be a scouting trip as I would have nowhere to store large sheet materials at the moment ( apart from the house ) mmmmm. I want to get my marine ply for the door at the same time.

In saying that, the type of MDF stuff for the underside of Highbridge comes in 1200 x 600 sheets. Maybe I could still work with that in the shed. It would be good to get it going.

    We'll see.

    Cheers

    Hi,

Back from B & Q where i bought some framing, sheet of 5.5mm ply and a tin of varnish. Also looked at external doors for the shed but thats for later.

I thought i'd get a few photos of highbridge on the go tolet you see where it is at.

They are mostly of the bridges thereselves just as an intro but there will be further pictures of the rest of the build which will come later as I will be revisiting it soon in order to progress the layout.

    here we go.

the first image is of the bridge abutments which will eveny=tually hold the bridge bearings.

the next is of the single lane bridge in place .

the next is a view of both the double and single lane bridges installed together to give an idea of the general picture.

And a further image of the single lane bridge in place by itself.

there have been various ammendments made to highbridge as it has been developed to allow for changes of ideas with rregards to spacing and to accomodate how I would like the embankment to finally turn out.

I will share these as I go.

I will hopefully get into the shed very soon as I have the materials to progress highbridge to a point where I could potentially get the power on.
its been on hold pending doing an extended frame depth to allow for the protection of the Cobalt turnout motors.

Back soon. all comments welcome as always.

    cheers

Them dar concrete slabs look dry, taking the outlaws home, I thought I'd have to give the car swimming lessons, I wont have to worry about washing the underside for a while.

Glad to see you working on the layout again, keep up the good work.

    PICTURES ! Hooray... :D

Great to see you getting back into the layout again Toto. It has been far too long. I'd say those bridge piers would strong enough to hold up The Forth Bridge !
Now, where did you put that printed brick paper...??

    Cheers, Gary.

    Hi Ron,

Photos you shall have mate. I have a beautiful day here in auld Reekie, it would have been ideal for doing the shed door.

My son is on early shift though and I need a hand as the door is a heavy door. It will need trimmed slightly before being hung.

I also need to get it delivered as it's too big to fit in the car. I may work a bit on the Highbridge baseboard with the stuff that I bought yesterday. I have a trip up to my folks to do first.

I have other photos already from previously so I may just get some of those up as that's something that can be done in a relatively short space of time.

Got to keep up with those Aussies. :avatar:

    Cheers for now Ron,

    Toto

    Ok,

Priorities have prevailed and the new shed door has been bought and fitted. Even had its first coat of varnish, only about another 4 coats to go and a door strip along the bottom to fit.

The inside is a complete midden but that will be sorted out next weekend when I get back from my first week back at work.

I have the stuff to get Highbridge kicked off again so I will try my level best to get some fresh posts up and continue with some interesting progress.

Again apologies for the delay but between one thing and another, time has been limited. Hopefully now that some of the forums main changes are out the way............ Modelling can reign supreme once more.:avatar:

    Cheers for now

    OK,

Getting ready for my shed attack tomorrow. here is a few pictures of the job ahead.

the layout has been progressed slightly more than what is shown below but these pictures best show the subject in hand. The extension of the baseboard timbers.

From the above, you can see that the baseboard timbers are 2 x 1 timbers. initially the turnouts were being controlled via wire in tube but I decided to switch over to Cobalts. Hence the reason I now have to deepen the framing as the Cobalts drop marginally beneath the existing baseboard height leaving them open to potential damage.

One of tomorrows tasks will be to fix a further 2 x 1 timber to the existing providing the depth required and also fixing a plywood underside to close off the underside of the layout to potential damage to the wiring and electronics.

a few more reference photo's to give you a better idea of the layout.

Above the track plan showing the shunters siding to the bottom left and as you follow the track up, two sidings ( left and middle ) and the main warehouse unloading siding to the right.

Same again but with one of the bridges being test fitted. the abutments have been partially re done and will be shown in more up to date pictures possibly tomorrow.

Another shot from a different perspective showing the start of the embankment gradient. This too has undergone some change since the above photos were taken but the new svheme shall be progressed and shown imminently.

Thats me for tonight but stay tuned as more up to date progress is on its way.

    cheers

It looks as if you have removed the small retaining walls and the shunters siding...?? Have you also lowered the height of the bridge ?

    Cheers, Gary.
