On the Lidcombe Goods Loop. Unfortunately, like a lot of my photos, not dated, but I think I took it in 1975.

In full forward gear with a decent load, she barks. My favourite part of any trip west or north was leaving Strathfield on the way home. You'd be in full gear, the safeties would be feathering and just about to lift, and you'd make sure the firehole doors were open in case she lost her feet and slipped a bit on the points coming out of 2 platform. The exhaust would be echoing off the walls of the TAFE college as you started rolling, sounding like gunshots.

As you got hold of the train and started the climb up to Burwood you'd link her up to about 2 or 3 turns off mid-gear, and settle back as you passed the "wonderwall" on the up side just before Burwood platform and admired your reflection. By the time you topped over the grade in the platform and shut off you'd be doing track speed, and the exhaust would be be a constant roar.

Dropping down through Croydon you'd crack the regulator and whistle as you passed the up end of the platform. There was a pizza restaurant with outdoor seating right up against the fence there, and we used to see how many people would jump in in fright as we roared past them. Yeah, childish - but great fun! :)

    All the best,

    Mark.

Here she is again, this time in 1970, with non-streamlined sister engine 3813, about to depart Sydney Terminal for Perth with theWestern Endeavour in 1970.

Harold Young, the designer of the 38 Class is on the left of this photo. He began his career with the Great North of Scotland Railway (which as most of us would be aware, had nothing larger than a 4-4-0) in 1885 and came to Australia in 1912, to work as a draftsman in Eveleigh Locomotive Works, Redfern. In 1932 he was appointed Chief Mechanical Engineer, a post he held for around 20 years.

That date sounds right. The RTM was being kicked out of Enfield in 75. I'm fairly certain your photo shows one of the trains that ran between there and Sydney Terminal as part of the last ever "Extravaganza" held at Enfield.

    Cheers,

    Mark.

Although I spent many years at Eveleigh working on the 38s, I never took many photos - usually too busy! :)

But I do have a few good images that I can share. This one came from Harold Young's widow. It shows '01 nearing completion at Clyde Engineering. Harold is on the far right with two of his railway colleagues in dark suits. The other three blokes are from CLyde.

Mrs Young contacted our GM and offered to donate Young's personal documents and photos to us. So the GM and the leading fitter went down the coast to visit her and spent a fascinating couple of hours with her, and returning with a large trunk full of his papers and photos. Lovely lady, too.

During the 1990s, 3801 Limited entered into a contract with the Powerhouse Museum to rebuild 3830. Here's a before and after shot of the engine we called the "Agony Bag". The before shot was taken at the asbestos removal plant at Elston's Siding at Redfern, and the after shot was taken outside New Loco at Eveleigh.

This is what an engine looks like when you remove the cladding and lagging after it's sat out in the weather for the best part of 25 years.

The core members of the rebuilding team are L to R:

    Rex Peters - 3801 Ltd fitter/machinist

Don French - former NSWGR boiler inspector

Albert Taylor - former NSWGR brake engineer

    Myself - 3801 Ltd boilermaker/travelling fitter

    Dave Matthews - 3801 Ltd carbuilder/travelling fitter

Jenni Edmonds - Powerhouse Museum conservator

Ross Goodman - Powerhouse Museum boiler inspector

Tom Anderson - 3801 Ltd fitter

Andrew Grant - Powerhouse Museum Curator.

This phot was taken a few days before the invitational handover ceremony of the engine at the Powehouse Museum at Ultimo, and the subsequent public handover ceremony at East Greta. She'd never look this good again!

    All the best,

    Mark.

Fascinating stuff. By the way, does anyone know where in Scotland Harold Young came from - as a Scot from the North-East and now resident in Sydney I can't help but be curious.

Anyway, here's another 38 class photo, but 3813 this time rather than 3801. This is one of the few occasions where I recorded the date - I took it on 13 May 1970 at Broadmeadow:

Yes, but it was a link to an album I have on Flickr rather than an image I uploaded to the forum.

And 3820 at Kimbriki on the 24th February 1974 en route to Taree - I can't remember for sure, but I think it was an ARHS special rather than an NSWRTM one.
