As many will be aware, I'm a Derbyshire lad, born and lived in Chesterfield for over 50 years, and I can remember the old 'Lancashire, Derbyshire and East Coast' railway 'Market Place' station on West Bars when it was in operation, Dad taking me onto the platform as a toddler to see the loco's back in what would have been the late 1940's. The station closed to passenger traffic in 1951, freight continued until around 1957 when the whole lot was closed and track lifted, the station building then becoming a local paint manufacturers factory/warehouse for a few years until complete demolition in the early 60's for the construction of large new office building for the "Accountant General's Department" for staff being moved up from London, simultaneous construction of a whole new housing estate on green fields taking place to accommodate the incoming workforce.
I was somewhat interested to hear of a series of 3 volumes detailing the history of the line, so duly ordered and received them. As a line, it never got further to the West than Chesterfield, and only as far as Lincoln to the east, which considering the intention was a cross country line from the Manchester Ship Canal docks in the West to proposed new docks at Sutton-on-Sea in the East resulted in the line being something of a financial failure. There is currently very little of the infrastructure still remaining, but my intention is eventually to seek out the few remaining vestiges purely out of interest/nostalgia.
This is the series of books.
