Every ace kit i've had has had an etched backhead although my j69 doesn't have any cab detail bar a wood effect etched floor

I'd guess the etched back head, would be due the designer not having access or the ability to make a master then cast them, but does have access to flat brass.

    Great work Kim

    Finished (ish)

looking at photos of the later BR lined version, showed the coal rails had been “lined” / filled in, presumably to hold more coal, so I’ve added some scrap etch to represent it. This meant fabricating some in fills around the ends next to the cab side. I’ve also added some doors, again from scrap, modelled in the open position which should help me when it’s time to add the crew. Still to decide if I’m going to solder the cab roof up....there’s some more research to do re the steam release valves as I’m sure the white metal part I’ve fitted is incorrect for the later models, so I might need to source some brass items once I know what I need. ( What do I need Rob and where from?)

Chassis suspension runs really well and I’m pleased I added the hornblocks. The issue I have is the motor gear box etch which is very flimsy, she runs ok for a while then the etch flex’s and jams up, so I’ve decided to order up a better gearbox / motor assembly as I intend to convert this to DCC with sound.

so motor/gearbox, lining and a crew ordered , no idea when that lot will arrive...

Enjoyable build, and despite ACE products reputation I would recommend this one as been a fairly straight forward build as long as you don’t mind a bit of filing and making up the odd bit of missing detail.

    Hi Kim,

Off the top of my head I would think that it would be fitted with Ross Pop safely valves by BR days which are available from Laurie Griffin or if you want to patronise our forum sponsors, Gladiator do a nice set from the J6 kit.

I will double check and confirm later this morning.

    Hi Kim,

Just checked and as I suspected C12's had started to be fitted with Ross Pop safety valves during LNER days.

Cheers Rob, I had a feeling you would know the answer. I’ll get on the web sites and have a look and place the order.

They definitely had Ross pops by br days as you say. There where also variations on chimney, dome, tank and bunker sizes too. Not the best pictures but here's my c12 in mid 50's condition made from a wagon and carriage works kit

Well this build looks good to me Kim and done in mega fast time too ... I did note the commentary from others and one from that bearded luminary gent in particular on the other place. I felt tempted to say something in support of you but decided it best not to become embroiled with others. Nice build and a nice outcome for a lovely engine ... well done Kim :tophat::tophat::tophat::tophat:

Cheers Paul, well as you know all to well I’m no expert on the real items. However I think the dome is to small. The instruction state BR used both small dome and chimney but looking on the net it does look like they used the large dome small chimney arrangement, incorrect instructions? My fault really as I should have picked one loco to model it on. Nothing that can’t be fixed. I’ve also found some brass safety valves which I will fit later today and there’s a few bits of pipework to add under the cab, but again no drawings show where they go so a bit of guess work on my behalf.

Rob, with your vast knowledge of LNER Locomotives, can I ask, did the side tanks have any other fittings, vents etc fitted to the top of them, other than the main fillers?

A few changes and a few bits of detailing added today.

bigger dome fitted, Ross pops fitted, smoke box riveted detailing added, steam pipes with brackets added , a selection of pipework to represent injectors under cab, changed the white metal stand pipes to working brass versions and added steam valves.
Still not sure about the tanks and fitting, but hopefully Rob will know. If not then it’s off to the painting department as is.

    Hi Kim,

There looks to have been some lifting eyes and other bit's and pieces which could be racks for fire irons I found this in Pininterest which gives a bit of an idea but it's not high enough resolution to zoom in. I found another shot in the RCTS LNER Green bibles (part 7) looking down from above but again it's not of high enough resolution to make out firm details. What the book does reveal is that some were push pull fitted if you wanted to add a bit more detail - Jim McGeown does a really nice set of cast bras push pull gear.

Thanks Rob for your assistance again. That first picture does show what looks like a lifting eye.....or is it the end of a fire iron tool???
I will check out Jim’s offerings.

I think it is a lifting point lug Kim and the breather vents, Ross Pop safety valve whistle, tank stays and water fillers can all be purchased from Laurie Griffin along with the lubricator reservoir case on the tank front and the oil atomizer valve at the base of the smokebox.Probably even get a tall shape steam dome... I got something very similar for my NSR New M loco and that came from the SE&CR section for Adams design locos.

    cheers Yorkie

Cheers Paul. I hope Toto has a go at the c14 kit, should be just as straight forward as this onto build.
