so I’m jumping back and forth here. Wanted to share this, then later I will explain how I’ve done it. It’s running a little over speed as it’s still bedding in, but we have a nice quiet turn table - which accentuates the click of the brass plunger pick ups for the deck rails as it rotates. It’s a little notchy at the moment as the rim was unsupported and it was pre oiling. I may have to strip it down again yet and just smooth some of the working surfaces to ensure a glide operation.
And today its been installed in to the layout. Time to set up and get rid of any teething issues. - I may even see if I can fit some kind of indexing, or at least something to aid alighnment now.

I’ve kept looking at the turntable and thinking something’s missing. There seems to be differing comments on if it’s a Ransom & Rapier design or if it’s a Cowan Sheldon, but looking at photos of the real thing it’s missing a few detail on the model. So, after studying some pictures, some drawings and the model, I’ve come up with a deck extension for the hand winder, position lock and a pipe for the vacuum drive off a loco... that also means it needs some air tanks, so two of those have been drawn up. Finally, I decided to try and replicate a R&R cast plate for the side. These are still in the design stage and not yet complete, but the link above should take you to a web page where you can see the work so far.
Andy whilst on the subject of drawing up plates for 3D printing... I need an LMS letter style smokebox plate for the Class M ... any chance you can oblige ? I think the font is Sans Seriff.
Hope so Dublo. I like my models to just look right, not always accurate, but have a feel. And when you look at the original kit, it’s seriously lacking.
I'm keeping an eye on this turntable 'Add-on' Andy, as I also have the Peco turntable. I DCC motorised mine with a proprietary kit (which presently I forget the name of, but I'll try and look out the 'bumph' that came with it!), but I like the idea of making it more realistic. The other thing about the Peco is that the slip ring idea for power doesn't work for the full 360 degrees, any thoughts on how to alter that, maybe another 3D printed part? I'm assuming that once you've perfected this, it'll be available via Shapeways. Keith.
Just had a root through my 'archives' and found the turntable motorising kit information. The kit is made by locotech.com and comprises a motor and integral all-metal gearbox with the coupling to the turntable, mounting torque arm etc. Looking on their website I see it's current price is £34.99 which is more than I recall paying, though I bought mine 3 or 4 years ago so I guess that's down to inflation. I found it an easy kit to fit and it's not given me any problems, I converted mine to DCC using a spare decoder and it runs smoothly and quietly, still cheaper than the 'Official' Peco motorising kit. I must add that I have NO connection with this supplying company except as a satisfied customer. Keith.
Hi Keith. simple answers, no and yes... I’d not thought about the ring... I don’t know if some kind of stay alive unit could be fitted under the deck? A capacitor? I’d need someone with better electronics knowledge than me for that. Maybe @paul_l Has a thought on this? as to the printing, yes. Although it may be a bit off yet, maybe new year. I’m currently printing parts at home and trialing. (Although I’ve more or less finished the design) I need to get a proper print done and ensure I can correct any errors. however, since yesterday’s post, I’ve changed and added. The air tanks will be solid but in the “cheap and cheerful” plastic, the deck and cast plates will be the fine ultra detail (or whatever they call it now) and at the moment it’s looking to work out at about £35. But... it will come as kits, so if you don’t what the tanks, you just have the hand wind deck.... (so that’s a bit of the cost.) anyway, it all has to be finalised. I’ll post some new pics later.
I plan on doing the deck parts exploded so it can be kit built. - only modification is to the original hand rail. please note, it’s all fictional although based on real drawings and cast plate, it’s just an interpretation and not to scale. But hopefully makes the Peco TT look more the fitting part than just the standard run of the mill.
Sorry to be picky Andy, but if you're going to be selling these you need to take the T out of Ipswich. Jim
No, not at all.. That's proof reading for something done at 3am on a night shift. I never spotted that. leave it with me.
For those interested, here is a trial which I’ve done on my own printer. It’s not perfect as it can’t print the detail, but sizes should be almost spot on so some trial fitting can be done. The complete model has been ordered and is going to print with shapeways.
So the parts have arrived. next up is to build and paint it. support frame (for the wooden deck) and the Rapier name plates. Hand crank, railings to match the Peco ones, locking lever, drive shaft and wheel cover and deck. air tanks made in a different plastic... These are quite weighty! And finally... some O gauge parts for @York Paul and myself. Builders plates and number plates. more soon. Happy Halloween!
For those interested, I have now made these items available for general sale.. The main deck is - http://shpws.me/RxqF at £18.50 +p&P (note the exchange rate may vary subject to where you are) and the air reservoir tanks are http://shpws.me/RxqI at £9.99 Andy
Some visiting stock. a friend of mine who works GB railfreight brought some models of the stock he works on..here are a few of the photos.
