The one thing I have noticed that I obmitted is the guttering.

I think I need to return to the design and look at the drawings and make some up! Think that would finish off nice.

I began adding the guttering, but this also highlighted another omission as pointed out by Yorkie. I’ll come to that shortly..

the front down pipe added to the guttering. E8A4E495-4AE1-45FC-834F-68AD834A7E33.png 39137915-6355-4FFE-BAAC-660B8365BCF5.png

and here is what Yorkie, at the opposite end to the down pipe, the gutter intersects and cuts through the end barge board. This will involve a reprinted roof. 007C737B-C489-47A2-850F-2EE576C04FDF.png

    Overall completed model.

now to set up to print.

What amazes me Andy is that the rainwater goods located at the porch end of the cabin discharged into a zinc collection tank placed on a stilage, presumably this was the water supply for the box to boil up to brew tea and also wash down the window panes. One would have thought that in a town the size of Leek even back in to early 1960's that a running water supply would have been installed by that time.

Is that what it is? Couldn’t fathom if it was something stood in front or what? (As other views were blocked by the steps)

what I have also noticed and totally missed before hand, is that inside the porch the lower panels are darker as per inside? Would this be Eau de nil bottom and biscuit upper?

Yes Eau de Nil lower inside porch panel and shelf with upper and inside porch window in Light Biscuit... the glazed cabin door was Gulf Red with glazing bead putty surround in Light Biscuit... hang on a min ... must finish taking the meds.

Ah that's better... yes the zinc stilage was under the porch balcony and next to the locking room door ... rumour has it that a former signalman used to take his three year old son to work with him and the stilage was used as a bedtime bath for the child... and no the signalman wasn't Jack Twigg as seen in the film footage which can be found on Youtube :avatar:

Geez...thats some crazy detail...I'm sure after having the sulfuric soot settle into the down pipes over the years they would have some decent holes in them by now...

I decided with a spare 10 mins whilst junior slept to have a look at getting the model a little closer to completion. One thing I had not yet done was paint the brick work on the locking room. I decided to try a new idea on this and used a sponge as you would for washing the pots (the kind with the Brillo pad on the back) and dabbed it in the paint and then dabbed it on the brick work.

not perfect, but I’m pleased with the result. Now to repaint the stone and wood work around it and then give it a weathering.

You have captured the brickwork and pointing effect well Andy, you will notice on many shall we say more obscure NSR buildings and structures which haven't seen that much renovation and repair that the pointing composes generally of a mix of lime mortar and boiler ash which gives a very dark finish. This composition can be either incredibly difficult to clean from bricks or it just falls away dependent on how much exposure to moisture the bricks have had. Anyway a very nice result there on Leek signal box.

If you want to add more colour to your mortar, you could always run over the whole model (brick work) with grey chalk, then lightly dust the surface off with a soft flat fan brush, leaving the chalk in the mortar gaps. This is then sealed with clear matt varnish or finishing sealer, the type artists use to seal their art works. ;)

    Cheers, Gary.

I was watching by chance one of those silly little clips last night that came up on farcebook or Intergram, where a woman was modelling Disney characters on each letter of her keyboard!!! One thing I noticed is that for some of the painting she used nail varnishes (no doubt what she had to hand I wonder??) but she finished with a Matt varnish and then cured it under a UV lamp (not unlike I’ve done with the resin)
I’m now wondering about doing this with some of the wood work as the gulf red has a habit of rubbing off and as Paul will no doubt say, I suspect it didn’t stay glossy for long in sunlight.

Interesting idea Gary. I may give that a try!

do you have any issues with the card parts warping post lacquer?

I used to paint shellack which is a wood knot resin on my card items and that stopped warping.

Back in July last year in post #182 I was talking about adding the guttering. I’ve finally managed to print it and the first part (which I didn’t post above) has been fitted to the toilet/lamp block.. and it fits perfect!

I’m actually impressed myself as previous efforts at guttering have not come out well..

the main down pipes on the box have had a trial fit (now painted) but as I have an earlier porch I either modify it, or bin it and reprint with the narrows stairs - something I didn’t spot till later on and went back to modify for later prints as the pipe work runs down the wall between the porch steps and locking room wall. The guttering for the roof has been printed and painted and awaits fixing (maybe tomorrow or Thursday) but later versions this is incorporated as part of the roof print as one part.
However, I appear now I’m close to completion, that I’ve lost some of the window rails, so need to reprint 2 or 3 of the 5 required.

I have also done a trial print of a photo for the absolute block instrument as I could never paint the detail on…. But it’s a bit on the small size so need to scale up a tad!

    till next time..

Best thing you can do with card is to paint both sides of the card at the same time. Warping is caused by the paint shrinking as it dries, so if you paint both sides, it shall equal itself out. ;)

    Cheers, Gary.

I also have to say that the signal box is looking good, really good ! A testament to your patience with the design work and the 3D printing.

    Cheers, Gary.
