He's back harping on about the cutter again ......

I wasn't overly happy with the surface finish and strength of the cutter - backed up by when I tried to cut 1mm cardboard the arm sheared off.

Most of my issues were down to the original spool of filament running out, and my replacement ones didn't give the same results. I suppose I was kinda spolit by it running pretty well straight out of the box.

I do need to upgrade my software as it doesn't provide the fine adjustment - or at least I haven't found how to do it. :whatever:

I had been running at 190 to 195 C, but printing test cubes etc, I found with the new filament 210C seems to give better results. I also changed the print speeds upped the fill % to 30% (was 15%), and increased the number of outer layers to 5.

    Original

The only issue is this increased the print times - 27h03m later

Hi Paul, so same design with a better plastic or have you altered the design?

    Hi Kimbo

No same design - downloaded from Thingyverse, and same filament

So the following changes were made

The bed was preheated to 70C - but not on during print session

Extrusion temp was increased from 195 to 210

% fill was increased to 30% (was I think 15%)

Number of shells increased to 4

Layer height set to 0.1mm (was 0.2)

Extrusion speed set at 60mm/sec and travel between points 90mm/sec

Still think I'm suffering from under-extrusion, so will need further tweaking, but hopefully when I change over to Octoprint (running on a dedicated Raspberry Pi) I will get finer adjustments.

Can I sell you a Stanley Knife...?? :avatar:

The new printed 'chopper' base looks the goods. Nice smooth finish, which I guess means better quality. 27 hours is a long time..! But perfection takes time...! ;) (Toto has years left in him yet... :D)

Can you leave the printer running whilst you are out and about, or is that dangerous ??

    Cheers, Gary.

Gary Paul lives in Scotland so to go to the nearest Rymans (office supplys) to buy one must be at least 14 hours each way so he's actually saving time.

Yes I know it's 4mm scale, but Viccy road has a severe lack of 0-6-0's, and I also know this is not DCC compatible, but after Keith's excellent tutorials, and my success on the V2 I'm not nervous about the conversion.

    Watch this space ..........

Ian, I'm googling to find out what I need to feed it to grow into a proper model :avatar:

Looking at it I reckon it'll be tight for space to get the decoder into the loco, plus the tender / loco connection looks very flimsey, so I think I will look at fitting the decoder into the tender, add pickups to the tender and replace the hook mechanism then convert to Kadee's - simples :avatar:

Looks in great condition Paul. Have you had it on a test track yet :avatar: Do you have a decoder in stock ?

To be honest Paul, I don't believe there's any such thing as a 'non-DCC-compatible' loco, or indeed anything with a 12 volt motor in it, subject to being able to source a suitable decoder!
I'm not familiar with this loco, so (A) Is it one of the 'Split-chassis' versions? and (B)New or '1 owner, low mileage'?:giggle:
I've bought a few cheap 'ex-display' and '1 owner, low mileage' loco's recently, including Hornby 2P and 4P, both tender drives, but bought cheaply for the chassis as I'm intending using them in conjunction with more of the "Golden Arrow Models" resin body kits, and in fact ordered the Q Class body kit yesterday. That will also be the ultimate fate of the cheap new 'Jinty' I bought from Kernow recently, which was why I wasn't bothered what livery it came in. The Class 08 shunter body I had left over from my 1937 Maunsell diesel shunter kit build has already been sold on Ebay, but still have the 8f body and tender to move on.
    Keith.

    Nice looking loco Paul

I like Keith see models that aren't DCC ready as just a chalange there's always a way.
Even if you have to do a little bit of surgery before the decoder will fit some times you have to get the heavy machinery out and remove chunks of dicast bit it's always doable.
I've been asked to add pick's up on a tender using DCC concepts Pick up wipers, will let you know what they are like when the loco arrives for the conversion.
I usually use PC board and phosphor bronze wire for wipers so I am also interested to see what the DCC concepts product is like.

    Hi Chris

Unfortunately, I'd come to the same conclusion, just add lots of pounds :whatever:

SWMBO has a few tasks lined up for me - so maybe a bit further progress later

WOW - over 3 years since I did anything on this thread ..... :(

Well it's finally happened - well almost ...... that's me amongst the alternatively employed - I would like to say retired, but I've just looked at SWMBO's todo list, and I have noticed the jobs all appear to have my name next to them :whatever:.

I think i'm being broken in gently as I've allowed to look at my list, and the first is the man cave, and bommers bench came out Number 1.

Based on a 800mm wide kitchen base unit with a 800mm wall unit above it for temp storage.

These have been here for a while, but have had a make over.

The base unit had the shelves removed and replaced with some drawer units kindly donated from my work.

The worktop is a temp solution made from 9mm ply + 18mm chipboard. This will be either replaced with a kitchen worktop, or edged with timber. Final decision will be dendant on phase 2 of the refurb, as planning permission has been granted for units down the remaining walls, with an area for SWMBO to carry out transfers from Video tape to digital of all our home movies of the kids growing up - see the dilemma - I get the chipboard, but the boss has higher standards :avatar:

The more observant may have noticed a unit to right, this actually a wall unit, converted in to a base unit, but with the passing of phase 2 will be used elsewhere as a wall unit - I've lived in Scotland too long to let it go to waste.

    The workbench itself

I love a whiteboard, this one is made by Rexel and purchased from Amazon, and is magnetic.

Talking of magnets, I have used some of my Neodyium 11 x 22 x 2 magnets to hold the instructions open at the correct page, and hold my 3 most used needle files, cutters and pliers.

Below the whiteboard is the Rolling road - the O gauge Rolling rails is to the right, I have still to replace the OO track for the DCC Concepts rollers and Kadee coupling gauge.

2 x Power strips - Righthand one is the master supply and each outlet has an isolation switch. One port supplying the lefthand 6 way power strip.

The bench itself has an A2 self healing cutting mat and when required a glass kitchen cutting mat. On this I have flipped it upside down, to give the smooth flat surface uppermost, great for assebly stuff, and doesn't get damaged by a soldering Iron or fluxes, and can be brought back to new by a visit to the dishwasher - only when SWMBO is out, although I suspicions were raised when I offered to do the dishes.

On the underside of the wall unit I have fitted 2 sets of Cool daylight balanced LED strips

Set 1 comprises of 4 x 300mm strips connected as 2 x 600 strips fitted to the front and back of the unit. these cost approx £20

This gives reasonablely bright light (Toto's comment was jeez thats bright), but for finely detailed work I felt more was needed.

Set 2 is 6 x 500mm (ish) which I have fitted between the other two rows of strip lights. These have a wireless remote and are dimmable all for £14. Toto's comment when these were switched on was Jeeeeezy Peeeeps :avatar:

To the left is my 5" magnifing lamp - this may have to be replaced as the tubes are getting very difficult to get hold of - I have two on backorder with Gaugemaster, they would at least to the order, no one else would . I just installed my last tube, so fingers crossed they will become available before this one burns out.

On the far right is my Dremel Drill Stand with a 3001 fitted in it, and my original 3000 hanging from the extending arm for hand held work. I do have the flexible drive shaft as well.

The soldering Iron that tends to stay on the bench is the KSGER T12 (hanging on the whiteboard is the spare handle with the whitemetal soldering tip fitted).

So there is the quick tour of the updated bench area, once the cave is sorted I'll update the thread.

Not sure if contagious, but in my case well overdue :whatever:

My previous workbench was also my computer desk, so tended to fill up with all sorts of unrelated projects and junk . It still is my main computer desk, but I'm trying to segregate the zones within the cave. Especially as I intend to progress the 3D modelling and also video making, so will tend to have research materials and graphics controllers (graphic tablet, button bank, audio mixer and video jog/shuttle devices).

The phase two has started with two 500mm base units, and another 600mm Data cabinet for my servers, Nas drives and networking - this will have 19" racks installed, with an adjacent 500mm cabinet for the video tape drives (may need to be a 600mm unit if they dont fit, hence just purchasing the two 500's at the moment.
Total length of the wall is approx 11.5 ft - well that was the size of Viccy Road, and part of the planning permission as Morag liked all the buildings especially as most were named after family members a few of which are no longer with us, and would like to see the layout again. So a work surface that can be used modeeling, or have a layout on top - boy does this woman no how to keep her hubby happy  :avatar: or is that confined to barracks :scratchchin: :avatar: or she's got something lined up I'm not been told about just yet :avatar:

    But were getting there

Once upon a time I remember been able to repair, build, make, install dcc, test, paint, store spares, project boxes , paints & brushes, glues., tools etc etc...............all at one 1.5m wide Bunnings work bench (albeit when I modelled 4mm scale), now , three work areas, part of the garage and project boxes in several 50L tubs hidden under LSD ! :avatar::avatar:
