Another one of those classic period videos, this time about the Brush Type 2 (Class 30).

    Enjoy.

    Cheers, Gary.

Fascinating video Gary especially for myself as I was chauffeur to the Brush MD and board of directors at the 'Falcon' works for 12 years from the Hawker Siddley days up to its take over by BTR. Prior to that my dad worked for Brush transformers and 2 of my brothers still worked there until recently. In that time Brush Traction built the class 60, channel tunnel 'shuttle' loco and some (not so successful) New Zealand loco's as well as various refurbishments. nowadays though Brush is only a shadow of its former self.

    Thank you Gary.

Some really interesting historical footage there.

Just thinking how electronic systems have advanced over the years.

    Kind regards

    Geoff

Saw this video a while back now... nice rugged loco the 31... assigned mainly to the Eastern Region in corporate image days... never had any at Stoke.

    Hello All,

the Class 30s , which used the Mirrlees JVST12V diesel of 1,250 hp , had cracking problems on BR , yet Rhodesian Railways , which used the same diesel engine, in their DE 4 ( 1400 ) class fixed the block cracking problem and thereafter got good service out of them. I understand the BR via Mirrlees, on sold the diesels to the fishing trawler industry.

GM-EMD used prefabricated, all welded construction for their diesel engines, whereas other makers used cast iron blocks. Whilst the latter may be fine for ships and road vehicles , the EMD diesel engines seem less vulnerable to cracking compared to cast iron. I also understand the GE diesel engines can only get two rebores before the engine block is scrapped, whereas the EMD prefabricated block can go on for decades. The VR "B" class, and CR/ANR "GM" classes are still running around with 567C engines and they are now 65+ years of age !

    Bbest wishes and regards. Echidna
