Just caught up with the thread Toto, you are definitely on a mission mate, well done.
I know what you are going through with the back pain mate, I've been on strong beta blockers for mine for years, all caused, I believe, from lifting up my Honda Goldwing when it fell over in 1988.

    Cheers, Pete.

How the hell did you get your leg over on a Honda Goldwing...... :avatar: I thought you were smaller than me.:avatar: At least you did it in the name of Prestige ..... :worship:

I am in the shed as I type and put the motor under power.

it goes well. I find it a little noisey though so I am looking to see if there is anything obvious cuasing the noise. I still have to solder the gearbox into its given position as it has the ability to move slightly at the moment.

I'll not be sitting in here for to long as I need to keep moving ....... I'm under orders from Dr SWMBO.

I will leave the driving rods for tomorrow. A little pleasure at a time. :tophat:It wont be too long before I am at it full pelt again.

    cheers toto

Getting my leg over wasn't the problem, my arse is a little close to the floor so when I lifted it up off the side stand it just kept going and my other leg couldn't reach the ground to stop it .

Oh yes, in a similar vein I once had a motorbike slide out from under me on some snow right outside Bradford Royal Infirmary. The bike landed on top of me and those that have met me will know that I am not a big chap so when it landed on me I couldn't for the life of me get it off me.

So I was laid there for quite some time struggling to get it off and stand up. Thankfully I did manage to slide it off me while getting toasted by the hot exhaust before someone came along to help which would have embarrassed me even more than I already was.

It was only the pride hurt and I didn't need to pop in for any treatment but it did make me realise that although I had passed my test on a bike, getting something bigger wasn't for me and I soon moved on to cars.

    More progress made today.

Splasher plate dressing etches installed. Reversing lever mechanism installed Fire box in place and smoke box tacked in as well. All the various etches around the base of the smoke box installed as well.

I have not done the usual progress photos but I might pop a couple of general shots up later.

    Cheers for now

    and

    and another

and the last one for now.

I'll plough on tomorrow with some of the white metal casts on the footplate and then revert back to the chassis for the connecting rods and to give the motor some attention as its a bit noisy. I nsuspect I dont have ot nset up quite right.

    cheers for now

Ooh that sounds exciting Toto... dressing the loco with castings, I'll look forward to that part as I think that is when you see the loco coming into its own. We are all advancing our respective locos at different points in this build and i found it interesting to follow how it all happens. Great work there Toto and me thinks three nice engines are on the way up. :tophat::tophat::tophat::thumbup:

That is looking really good Toto, it even looks like a 4F - well after going through a low bridge and loosing the Chimney, dome and cab roof, but you know what I mean :avatar:

I'd suggest that you just watch and ask loads of questions Mark. Then .... jump in. I've spent the last 7 years doing just that always being too afraid to have a go at the potential of failure.

Keep watching other folks builds, try and get some of the various principles of the different processes in your head then " venture out ". Just dont fake as long as me as my sense if self confidence was maybe a bit ridiculously too low. Fair enough, tread with caution but eventually...... you need to take that first step and it may even be at the expense of a kit.

I started with a couple of plastic kits way back and had reasonable success. I think it is a natural progression as there is slightly less daunting skills to learn than that if brass work.

    Not a bad game plan.

    Keep going buddy

Never made the shed today. One or two things took over events. Nothing of any real importance, just the way it goes at times.

Never mind, I'll make up for it tomorrow evening.

    Cheers for now.

    Well, I'm back. :avatar:

Quite a few days off. :avatar: I'm hoping to be back in the saddle later today and to make a concerted push towards getting the various parts of the build completed.

The tender is more or less there. Just needs the chassis separated from the body, maybe one or two very minor details looked at then primed.

The loco. I need to separate chassis from body. Get everything on the chassis up to speed to allow me to prime it. The break rigging etc is my main dilemma which I need to focus in and make a final decision on the timing of in relation to painting. I also have to finally tie the motor and gear box in permanently as the way it stands at the moment, it's running like a bag of spanners. The meshing is not quite correct somehow.

The body has a bit to go with steps and all the whitemetal parts and grab rails etc still to go.

So, to clear my head and focus I need to identify and break the above down into manageable tasks and get on with it.

That is today's priority ..... identify and commence.

Time to get some rhythm back into the build again and get this over the line. I have a Ramsbottom that is screaming out to be finished as well so ......... finger out time ...... the break is over.

See you later in the shed.

    Toto

back in the shed tonight ........ at last. As well as having lost the mojo a bit I have been looking into some forum stuff ...... sponsors ( potential new additional ) and .... ressurecting the footbridge which I am still working on ..... anyway thats for another time ......... the 4F ..... started cautiously tonight just familiarising where I left off and started by tacking the chassis and the footplate apart again.

now ..... i thought I'd start easy ..... back on the foot plate and her is wot i done .......

grab rails on the front boiler plate .... needs some cleNING UP YET AS IT LOOKS ROUGH .....

    Then ......

more handrails along the side of the foot plate just beside where one set of steps are due to be fitted .......

    speaking of steps .......

four sets of them cut out, bent up and soldered together ready for fitting. two mid way along the foot plate right beside the newly fitted grab rails and two cab side.

HALT ......... the two sets that go beside the grab rails should really have been fitted before the grab rails as the solder from the grab rails throws out the steps a little. So tomorrows first job is to take the grab rails back off ( which I was not entirely happy with anyway ) fit the steps ...... then the grab rails as there are two holes on the top plate of the steps for the grab rails to fit through. I might also add a bit reinforcement in the form of some rod down the back ( hidden )side of the steps.

OK ..... small steps ( excuse the pun ) taken tonight but at least it has got me going again ..... so until tomorrow ....... adios amigos. :tophat:

    Hi Toto

Before removing them, try grinding them flat then fit the steps, however if your not happy with them .......

here is another possibility.... this is how I did it, first off I formed the grab rails from 0.7mm wire then dry fitted in place using a piece of thick card to hold the grab rail at the correct height on the footplate. Next I offered up the steps and soldered the assembly together as one unit taking care the grab rail stayed in the correct position.
