Just to let the good folk of Platform 1 MRC know that Toto has the firing pistol ready for the Grand Connoisseur Models Joint 4F build commencing this Saturday, so as to avoid confusion as to who is doing what, where and when the eager participants will have their own individual threads. So I'm setting mine up now in preparation and with any luck that nice man Mr Dundee will be explaining how we can link these threads together. Gosh I'm confused already. :scratchchin:

OK ...... The penultimate warm up thread for my build of the Connoisseur 4F kit.

i however will not be aiming to the lofty heights of building to a particular loco. I will be content just more or less achieving the kit as it was presented.

here is my intended target build outcome ..........

and here is my most likely projected outcome .......

    Now ..... I'm not really a betting man .... but ....

    see you all tomorrow.

So ..... a very slow tentative start to this build.

Started as instructed by soldering the 6ba nuts to the tender foot plate ......

    to get this .....

    and this .....

Now .... I've done this before on the Ramsbotton and it was a breeze ..... worked first time.

I followed the same process .... lightly oil the nut and bolt to prevent the solder taking to the threads and gumming the whole thing up..... but ... guess what. I still managed to solder the whole thing fast.

No real issue ... just re heat it and undo it then do it again. Three attempts before I got it. Dont know why. I think I must have just lingered a bit to long with the iron. No matter ..... its done.

Next is to drill out a couple of holes that have been missed from the tender beading at production stage ..... a small matter. No big deal.

that is where I am and hoping to make up a little of the lost time.

    back later.

    OK,

I started to drill the holes out on the beading whilst the part was still on the etch.

I done one and stopped. I have decided that the beading is quite fragile considering the size of the hole that is required so have decided to wait until the beading is attached to the sides in order to give it a bit more rigidity.

So .... I started to cut out the beading from the etches and solder into the preformed half etches in the main tender sides ......

first one done. it is actually a bit better than the photo would suggest. Its amazing how the reflection off the etches can distort the finish a bit.

and then the two were complete.

Now. Its time to start looking at fitting the sides and rear tender body etches to the foot plate ...... thats where I am at now.

    more later.

    cheers

I must admit that I never rely on oil, I always blacken the screw with metal black to stop them getting soldered up. A 6ba tap is worth investing in too. Then you can clean out the threads on the nut before trying again.

Good idea Rob. I'll check my tools out as I may actually have one.

So ...... I started getting the components together with the use of an Engineers square .....

I have to jump on a bit as I was a bit engrossed in the build and didn't stop to take record photographs which is a bit unlike me so please accept my apologies. Hopefully one of the pauls will be able to fill in the missing side installations on their builds.

As you can see, i have the sides on and although not apparent from this shot, the internal strengthening plate.

you can just see it in this shot. I also have the handrails soldered in place.

and the steps on the back end.

and a clearer photo of the inside intermediate strengthener.

As always, I'll temper my comments by saying that its not the best build but for me, its going together pretty well. for some reason I have made more bloomers on this build so far than any of my previous last six or so builds. Nothing that could not be reveresed like putting the sides on the opposite sides and wondering why I had a 1.5mm difference between the height of the side, and the back end. however , the penny dropped as to what I had done and was easily rectified. The thing is, it was the time factor in the aborted work that annoyed me more.

Never mind, I am at a reasonable stage for the end of the day. Well, I actually have a bit time to go this evening but I dont think I will set my sights too much further. maybe a wee bit more but I am in brandy mode now. Its been a great day sitting here with the shed door open.

    until later .... thanks

Decided to call it a day ..... a bit of a clean up and still a bit more to go in the inside hidden faces.

final image for the day .....

The next stages are the tender top, the coal bunker and the front of the tender which are all quite big pieces and a bit more involved so did not think it was wise to start these when A) time was getting on and B) the brandy has kicked in ..... :avatar:

So a fresh start tomorrow with some fairly exciting stages to go at.

    see you then

    thanks for tuning in

Just noticed I have a lamp bracket to go on the rear. :whatever: I'll catch that later. I should be able to get the iron on the inside to sweat it in place even after the top is in place ...... but before the coal chute etc.

My concern being if I done it at the moment, the rear still has to take considerable heat when the top gets soldered in place and it may just melt the solder keeping the bracket in place ...... maybe not.

Anyway ...... I shall be hitting the shed in the next wee while.

    Cheers for now

If this helps you this is how I fit these etch lamp brackets having firstly bent them to shape. Tin then all over as this strengthens the piece; essentially a folded up item like this is a lamination, then place to item where it is to be soldered by holding in position having fluxed the surfaces, with a stanley blade edge hold the lamp bracket in situ and play a hot tip over the bracket for a second or two which contacts the tender tank and the solder will flow. I clean up afterwards with a file if solder has overflowed.

back again with the latest update .....

I started to look at the tender top and the coal chute.

soldered up the chute after a bit of dry fitting and playing around. Only btagged at this point though as they may need slight adustment.

and again ..... but in position ( dry )

Then I soldered the top edge of the chute to the edge of the opening ......

at this pint I cut a 21mm bit of cardboard and lined it up with the top edge of the tender in order to get the correct height for the nickle silver chute sides.

I soldered this as per the cardboard guide line .....

    and you get this.

The moment of truth though is when you attach the tender front ( dry ) and check that the bottom of the firemans tunnel aligns with the bottom edge of the chute ...... which I'm happy to report that it does .... perfectly.

    another shot .....

    and from behind.

and that is where I am up to at the moment. Now to look at taking out the tender front which is only placed in for now and fitting the associated furniture before refitting.

    cheers for now

So ..... the tender business end .....

    starts with this and .....

    these .....

    giving this ......

    and that.

and when combined with these .......

    gives this .......

    and that .......

then dry placed into the tender body for a test fit .......

and this final image for now ...

So, still got a little floor platform to build and fit and one or two other fittings before I can consider this to be " near built "

    back later
