Please refer to comments on Dapol five plank ( natural ) open wagon thread with reference to dodgy axles popping out of their keepers.

Same story on this wagon type as well. Will be test running them as soon as I can and if there is any derailing issues ........ They will be returned.

Apart from the rather sloppy axles, they are a well finished van as you would expect from Dapol.

I'll reserve my final judgement until I have fully checked them.

    Cheers

    Toto

You'll just have make the kits instead, then the only one to blame for sloppy axels is you :avatar:

    That`s disappointing Toto,

They need to be made aware that quality control is not on the job.

Assuming that you mean the axles slip easily out of the pivot points, I suppose you could drill out and fit 'Top hat' pinpoint bearings to reduce the clearances. Having said that, I'd agree that Dapol QC wants a kick up the Jacksie. (Not the first time they've got it wrong, was it the Class 24 with the direction lights the wrong way round?) Depends how much you really really want the wagons and would rather risk modifying them than returning them, although as Paul has said, if they're available in kit form, you could do that modification as you build them......probably save money too!

I'll try running them both empty and loaded and see how they do. If there is no derailing issues as they don't pop out there keepers, then I'll keep a hold of them. They are just a bit on the sloppy side.

To be honest Keith, there isn,t much difference in cost between RTR and kit built in O scale these days with Dapol and Skytrex for example, they give you the opportunity to open the box and play, I think myself that the standard of build on RTR is lacking, I have heard lots of complaints of problems with loose, missing or dodgy fit of parts but I rarely hear people say they are sending stuff back, preferring to sort problems out themselves.

    My three arrived this morning.

First impressions, very good, nicely finished.[IMG]

Nice to be able to remove the roof easily. This will make adding weight to them easy. As I do with all the kit built one's I will add a brace across the model to help stop any warping in the future.

Good to see Dapol have finally started to blacken the three link chain

Re wheel slop, yes there is more side-wards moment than on the kit built ones but so far there's been no derailments. This show the axle hard against the right hand side.

The box size has changed as well. 5 plank wagon box on the left.

I didn't go for an insulated version but they look OK as well. What do you add as weight ?

Hi Toto, I normally use 50g per axle, which has worked ok for me, plus it's a handy weight to get as the lads at the tyre balancing shop just happened to have plenty of self adhesive ones available

Yes inside the van. Mineral wagons are done a bit different, I cut a sheet of thin "lead" the same size as the wagon and weather it up, works a treat for empty wagons. I did the same with the Peco one plank wagons I made for LSD, only difference was that I scribed the planks into the "Lead" ( I think it's more zinc based stuff we get over here from Bunnings)
