    Hi Folks

Always something to do on the Dargan layout but for a new direction, I wanted to look at historical trains and not just historical buildings. So here is the first instalment looking at wheat trains in NSW. You will see that some S tucks have tarpaulins. This is because I found a few S trucks stamped with "bulk wheat only" so I presumed their loads needed to be covered. No idea how they were loaded or unloaded but have since found out that bags of wheat were simply emptied into the wagon. They were modified S Trucks and had an opening door in the bottom.

    Cheers

    G`day Richard,
The video appears to be set for private viewing only and won`t play for us plebs, so you may have to go into the YouTube settings and tick it for public viewing.

Hi Gormo. I just checked and it is shown as for public viewing. Jakesdad has ticked the like box so he has accessed it. Could you please try again?

    Cheers

    OK Richard,
Yes it`s fine now........just watched it right through.
The wagon loads look very good and the shunting operations are interesting.
It`s very good to watch especially with that bit of history there to back it up.
So mate......when do you start building the Darling Harbour extension..???......:avatar:

    Thanks Gormo,

A few more videos to get underway before contemplating any extensions but I was musing over a different direction....towards Lithgow? I must also observe that apart from a few devotees, the Australian members get very little response of late on PFM1and the site now seems to have devolved to a UK group which is a pity from where it used to be. I get a wonderful response from my two main Facebook sites as well as the PFM1 page which makes it all worthwhile..

    Cheers

    and happy modelling

    G`day Richard,
    In regard to your observations
" I must also observe that apart from a few devotees, the Australian members get very little response of late on PFM1and the site now seems to have devolved to a UK group which is a pity from where it used to be. I get a wonderful response from my two main Facebook sites as well as the PFM1 page which makes it all worthwhile.."
I don`t know why things have changed in that regard and can not offer up any ready solution to turn back the clock to how things used to be.

I guess we have to accept that railway forums, Facebook pages and social media generally, are dynamic, constantly evolving and changing entities that follow no clear path toward the future.
They really are a " flavor of the month " form of communication and could fall out of favor overnight. Such is the nature of the beast.
My YouTube channel gets far more feedback than my forum pages these days, however, I stay loyal to the forum as I have met some good people through these pages and in person as well.
My YouTube channel, even though it has become the vehicle to show my videos around the World, is not entirely trusted by me.
We are now about to have all videos on the site monetized ( advertising ), whether you like it or not, and for those that do have advertising, the USA IRS wants your tax details. If you fail to supply the details, they will tax you at 24% on videos shown Worldwide.
I am not about to give a Multi National Company based in a foreign country my Aussie tax details so they can go and jump in the lake.
Covid has also had a role to play Richard.
I think peoples confidence is down generally and a lot of us have become a bit more reclusive and protective of ourselves and our families.
I feel this can sometimes contribute to lack of the blessed mojo and turn the volume down on the enthusiasm to participate scale.
One thing that has been constant throughout this crisis is the forum.
It has kept going like Covid never happened. Admittedly there has been a shift towards British O Gauge topics, however that also shows that the forum members interested in O Gauge are possibly participating on the forum more than the rest of us who follow a different gauge.?
I honestly don`t know Richard, I am only guessing........all I can say is keep updating your Dargan topic, it`s a pleasure to follow it, and if it keeps popping up on a regular basis, it will attract more responses.
Anyway, I`ve detained you too long......I know you have Wheat sacks to fill and trucks to load and unload.........happy rail roading.

I can see where you are coming from Richard, I can only say keep your contributions coming mate. There definitely is a larger O gauge now than earlier, that doesn't mean the forum as a whole is leaning that way, just that more O gauge modellers are posting. The only answer is to post more Aussie and 00/N scales. It is your forum and it needs your input to carry on.
As an aside, one or two of us joined the new 7mm scale society forum that open its doors last year. Posting on there is sluggish and the same people doing it. Please don't let that happen here, we enjoy all types of modelling regardless of scale or era!

    Cheers, Pete.

I have absolutely no idea where members of this forum reside so will respond to any post that catches my eye. To say Australian members get little response seems a bit strange. Can’t really say I get much response and don’t expect any, perhaps it is down to what I post.

    Please keep the posts coming.

Hello Richard hope you are doing good and staying safe in these strange times, Dargan is a good thread and from an observers perspective (me) not only an interesting layout build but one which has had a lot of thought given to it and skill in the making process... so my best advice is do please continue posting whenever you want and I sure Toto and Gormo would agree with me that the forum is for everyone and everyone's pleasure. I'll try and be more attentive to all posts as recently things have been difficult in my personal life what with a dog who has decided to stop walking and work commitments too.

As another example much of my thread topic recently posted also gets very few comments, maybe my subjects which are BR standard locos and NSR (that is North Staffordshire Railway) station build is not everyone's cup of tea, however I keep posting up whenever a development occurs and look forward to yourself posting Dargan updates too.:tophat::thumbs:

    cheers Yorkie

As you say Brian the main thing is too keep posting updates on your interests and project work... once a long time ago I raised the question of regular posting with Toto as I felt I was posting way too much and risked overloading member's by being shall we say too enthusiastic, Toto's reply was just keep posting whatever you want because people see the topics and will respond if they feel they can imput something to add or just comment.

Thank you all for your messages. Probably what I was getting at was that Australian members seem to be more interested in Facebook rather than our website. I may be wrong but thats how it seems. Facebook might be OK for short bits and pieces but compared to the website and particularly threads on members personal layouts it is a bit like comparing a 20 second shot on the evening news to a 30 minute documentary where you can see the story develop. I shall press on!

    Cheers

    Hi Folks

We are a long way from Europe here in Oz so there are not many opportunities for us to entertain international visitors. Not so for our Bi-Centennial so when I got a good deal on a particular locomotive, DCC with sound, I could not resist the opportunity. So here is my video of an esteemed visitor.

    Cheers

Well, I'm not sure if I would be classed as an Australian member or not as, although I have lived in Australia since 1958, I wasn't born here, and my model railway is predominantly British. Be that as it may, I can't say that I have noticed much difference of late in the forum. Aside from a few more forum members becoming interested in 0 gauge, I don't think it has changed much since I joined (although I have to admit that I have been rather quiet over the last couple of months or so, so perhaps it's time I made a few more posts).

I can't comment on Facebook, as I don't use it.....

    Regards.

    Jim

Well, with a two week full lock down in Sydney because of the latest Covid 19 outbreak, there is no further reason to delay some of those more tedious projects!

    Cheers

Well, if there is a silver lining to this it will be seeing more updates from you Richard, always look forward to them!
Might get a bit of time myself to do something...
    But probably not much.

    Hi Folks
The Flying Scotsman visit to my Dargan layout prompted me to look at some of the very old coaches in my collection and think about a bit if restoration. So out came some of the 60 year olds and here is the result. A bit of UK running every so often brings back early memories.

    Hi Folks

Well it looks like our latest Covid 19 lock down is going to last a little while longer but luckily those of us who are blessed with (or cursed by?) a love of model railways, there is always something to do.
So I am still keeping busing on getting up to date with some of those annoying projects, this time tidying up the control panel wiring, replacing the tired graphics and installing panel indicators to show the status of the breakers. Now I can just glance at the panel from anywhere in the room to see if there is any problem.

Another one I am working on is the installation of a new turnout into an existing section of track and creating a new connection over to an existing refuge. This will enhance the wheat silo area of the layout and allow for realistic wheat wagon loading. I am keeping a video log of progress.

    Cheers

    and happy modelling

    Well done Richard.........:thumbs::thumbs::thumbs::thumbs::thumbs:
It makes a big difference when you can see the status of your settings from across the room.
Funnily enough I`ve been giving some thought to panels this afternoon myself.
Thoughts only at the moment.......Covid has given us some extra time for model railways and we must be thankful for a good hobby like this when we are confined to quarters.
    Keep up the good work..:tophat:

    Thanks Gormo

This exercise started as part of the installation of a new turnout and connection to the wheat silo. Then one thing led to another when I had to wire the new turnout and provide a new switch in the control box. Well then of course I had to renovate the control box and if I was doing one control box well then I just had to do the other. Now getting back to the new silo turnout......

    Cheers
