Just as an aside, if you click on Davids photos, you get taken to another page and if you scroll to the bottom there is a large copy of the photo with much more detail. Dunno if it works on all photos but it did on his post.

    Thanks Pete and David

It worked for me also but now looks even better then it did in smaller scale. A tutorial on passenger coach weathering is now essential! It must be there somewhere?

Would love to hear all thoughts and comments from those who have been there and done that!

    Cheers

    and happy modelling

Yes I noticed that too Pete, it works of pictures in my media also. Now David's cargowagon weathering is a work of art in fact I'd say it's the best weathering I've seen by miles.
    cheers for now York Paul

David the 08 weathering is absolutely stunning mate, it has to rank as one of the best I've seen so far. No kidding but you are an artist turning work out like that.:tophat::tophat::tophat: Anyway thanks for showing us your skills.

Thank you all for your kind comments, and I would like to pass on what I know, or should say, found out about weathering over the years I've been doing it.
All these models you see are commissions for clients that I've done over this past couple of years.
Some come to me fully painted and some not, but I don't mind as I like the painting side of it too. I'm not in the modern bed of painting materials, in the fact that I use only Cellulose paints (Mixed by my local car paint dealer) with cellulose thinners, in a well ventilated area and with a decent 3M full mask.
I like cellulose for a couple of reasons, 1) It flashes off quickly. 2) You can mask painted surfaces within an hour or so. 3) It's workable (wet sanding, T-Cut) within an hour or so.
Once the paint is on, transfers next, once they're dry, Testors Dullcote. You now have a rock hard painted shell to work on with various weathering tequniques.
I will come to these next time, but just one little snippet: Heljan factory paintwork will react to Pure IPA and leave a white residue. You can also strip Heljan bodies with IPA and Dettol, but Dettol stinks and is slower!!!

Here are a couple of Heljan VAA's that were weathered for a client, re-numbered and then attacked with various weathering tequniques.

I feel that I'm letting the steam side down a bit, after all that is the era I'm modelling in, late 1950's to 60's.

Here is a Tower Brass Fowler 3F Jinty which came to me as a very basically weathered loco. By basic I mean that someone had waved an airbrush at it in a few places and it didn't look too good.
The paint finish, etc was sturdy so I blasted the whole body with Testors Dullcote and left to harden overnight.
Once hard I used AK Interactive rust stains (Light, Medium and Dark) to pick out where rust would form. Once the basic rust colour was there I enhanced the tones with some Pinnacle rust pigment, only lightly, but just to give the colour some texture.
Once all the rusty parts were treated I turned my attention to creating the road dirt around the body of the loco, again using AK Interactive washes and panel liners, wiping away any surplus.
Once I was happy with the overall look of the loco, I then apply Testors Dullcote again to tone down the whole look and to seal it all in.
After the Testors has dried off, I then go around with the airbrush with both a very weak (About 80/20, Celly Thinners/Paint) Railmatch Frame dirt and a touch of mid grey mixed in to it for a bit of a grey hue to the road dirt. And then the same ratio of mix of Enamel black over the sooty and smokey areas over the top of the boiler, etc.
Once all this is dry, I then go around the edges of steps, etc with some Metal Texture, which is a very fine metal powder, with a similar effect to rubbing a pencil lead over the area. I then give the oily bits such as crank pins, etc some attention with a glossy oil wash and fuel stains (Both from the AK Interactive range) and then the final touch is the splashed and trailing water marks on the tank top and down the sides of the tank.

I am not a Rep for AK Interactive in any way, I've just recently discovered their products and find they are exceptionally good.

Anyway after all that, here she is:

I also painted up some Ixion Fire Irons from their Steam Loco Tools Kit and glued them to the top of the tank on one side.

Here is a kit built Fowler 4F loco & tender. It came to me fully painted and numbered, and just wanted a bit of a more detailed weathering, other than the airbrush blow over it had been given.
I set about with AK Interactive rust washes in the places that they'd be found, then I used various washes and pigments where build up would be to give more of an individualised look. I gave the tender tank top and hatch some attention, showing water spills and surface rusting from the hob nail boots of the fireman watering up the loco regularly. Some fire irons were used from the Ixion range to add colour around the tender as well.
I also fitted her with a Zimo MX645R with aYouChoos 4F sound project and the only difficulty I had was making sure the tender was fully insulated from the loco as it was built with the American style of pick-ups, loco one side, tender the other.

And here she is finished and off to her owner:

Great work David thanks for sharing very inspiring to look at reall6 like the Jinty, as someone who loves doing a bit of weathering I really enjoy seeing technique’s used by others and how various brands look I’ve been looking at the AK range after the Mig range was absorbed and is no longer available down under, looking at the effects achieved On your models it will be a good replacements for the Mig product as I depleted my current stock.
    Thanks for posting your work

    Ho Toto,

I reckon choosing POTW for David was an almost impossible task because they are all brilliant. Guess it came down to the one that was most appealing.

Here is a recently released Heljan class 37 with centre head code box that I've fitted with a Zimo MX696 and a large bass reflex speaker in the tanks.
I've then weathered the loco as an 'in-service' example, not so much rust as grime!

Here she is, 6834 in BR Blue for my friend Brian who builds my buildings for me.

And here is a video of 6834 in action on my layout:
