Earlier this year in a Platform 1 competition I was lucky enough to win one of Jim McGeown's new Drewry 153hp diesel shunter skill builder kits which is a new release and a new venture for Jim into diesels, anyway with another imminent total lock down looming now I thought would be a good time to crack this little kit open and make a start before I get on with another steamer. So this afternoon I put my Xuron cutting snips to some lovely crisp etches and got the footplate made up, the buffer beams are made up from laminations... four at the front and two are the rear, no need to bore folk with pictures of a buffer beam but to mention that if care is given in aligning the faces up then the mainframe chassis will just drop into place without issue.

Now I'm not sure how I want to finish this loco as the kit allows for the tram option and also a cut down industrial cab, I'm not drawn to the tram option and having seen the industrial cab in pictures I much prefer the taller main line cab profile which to me is much more to my taste. There is also the option to have checker plate footplate treads and either industrial headlamps or main line marker lights and lamp irons, so checker plate it is and main line lamps as well, the checker plates are half etch laminations and again with care a neat fold can be made assisted by a score line on the rear which Jim has kindly provided two tiny triangular markers to line the straight edge up to.

Next stage is to build the chassis, I've ordered the wheels ready and also a suitable ratio worm gear for slow speed running. I'd like to turn this loco out in the John Summers livery of Grass Green with red wheel centres as the old Shelton Iron and Steel locos were even though Shelton never had Drewry shunters I don't think that is an issue really.

Great start Paul.....but if I were you I’d be sorting out some more kits as I have a feeling this one won’t last the duration of lockdown

I was going for a Caprotti 5 as the next one but this is changed as something irresistibly very lush has just turned up and because I've just landed two nice empty house make over I now have full order books until the New Year with more to go back to later... that is assuming SWMBO (who is making noises about wanting a new laptop or notebook and heap of other stuff) doesn't divert funds then the Caprotti will also be a goer. Anyway thanks for the heads up Keith... just sent the chap an email expressing serious interest and awaiting reply.

    cheers Yorkie
