    Hi Gormo,

Another excellent video. I think I may try and look into the same software. It does look really user friendly.

I'm not saying I'd get it right first time but I think with a bit playing around, something decent could be achievable.

Thanks again for sharing yet another enjoyable episode.

    cheers

    Toto

    G`day Toto,
    You`re welcome.
Toto ....if I`m right, you have an apple computer. I believe Imovie is excellent as well.
However on a PC.....Moviemaker is really easy once you get comfortable with it. I guess that`s the thing.???....It`s a tool....and when you become familiar with it you can make it do what you want it to do, within it`s capability of course. What I like about it is that everything is laid out in a logical way and things like trimming the length of a clip or a sound track etc...are easy to accomplish with a minimum of fuss.
Once you understand what you can do with it, you can start planning your short films in your head because you`ll know how they`ll turn out. For example my intros where I give a little speech, I`ll start the camera recording, walk back to my position, compose myself, look at the camera, give it a second or two and start talking. The same at the end. Stop talking....wait a second or two and then return to the camera and stop recording. Then in Moviemaker I trim off the beginning and the end to give a more slick transition between the clips.

Anyway old son.....give it a go...and if you need any help don`t hesitate to let me know. I`m no expert, but I know my way around the software pretty well now after doing 130 odd little movies.

The one thing I would say to anybody reading this, is that you all have been trained how to make video clips, but you are not aware of it. You`ve been watching TV and films all your lives. When you`re watching a movie or a sitcom or whatever, look at it from the camera man and the editors perspective. Analyse what they are doing to keep you interested or annoyed. Imagine how they`ve put it together and how you would do the same. Get behind the action so to speak. I bet if you had their resources, you could do a pretty good job yourselves because you`ve had a lifetime of watching and subconsciously analyzing these films.
The best advice I was given regarding filming was to let the camera do the talking......in other words...don`t move the camera unless you have to. The viewer then focuses on the action rather than the annoying camera movement. Don`t zoom in and out whilst shooting....very annoying....but sometimes necessary for model trains.

Anyway, a rather long response to you Toto and gone off on a tangent as usual.......sorry `bout that.

I better get off my soap box now

    Cheers

    Nice one Gormo, excellent video.

I checked my Win10 pro install and movie maker isn't present. Not an issue for myself as I use VideoStudio (now owned by Corel) and have done since it was Uleads Media Studio on Win 95.

As Gormo points out these are tools, and you tend to get used to the one your comfortable with, don't get wowed by the lists of effects etc, you wont use them. Just look at TV programs, they rarely use any effects, and when they do, they are so subtle you wont notice (and thats the whole point). The crossfade or dissolve is probably the effect you will use the most, as it will help mask a jump cut (where the transition from one scene to the next jarrs or doesn't quite feel right).
As Gormo's video shows, you will use more effects during the title shots that any where else in the video.

The Platform 1 MRC logo used at the end was created with a transparent background. This allows the image to float over the background just like the titles.

I bought " Movie Edit Pro " but have only really used it as a method of downloading into a file to save " as is " from the camera.

I will maybe try it out editing a couple of clips and trying to add a title or two before rushing out to buy anymore. However, if I can't get the swing of it, I wouldn't be opposed to purchasing Movie Maker.

I may make Highbridge my experimenting ground for my first proper video. It is ideal as when it's running, there are various perspectives from which some very short clips can be done.

See if I get the nerve. :avatar: and the patience of course.

    Cheers for now

    Toto.

    I forgot to ask,

When shooting clips on your camera, I take it when you finish one and stop the camera, as soon as you start it rolling again, the software can spot the gaps in the filming and import the video as two separate clips ?

It will simply recognise the break in the filming and treat as two or three or however many short clips you do with breaks between?

    Cheers

    Hi Toto

Depending on the camera - If you stop the camera recording then it it creates a seperate clip (most digital cameras I've used only work this way), if you pause the recording then un-pause, then the clip remains as one ( my analog and DV cameras worked this way).
When you come to import the clips into your computer, you will see lots of clips numbered sequencially. For a big project, actually a good practice to get into for all projects, should then be logged, giving start and end points and descriptions of useful bits within the shot. It makes life a lot easier when you start to assemble your project, and if you keep the raw footage, handy to search for future projects.

When you are recording footage, always give yourself extra footage at the start and finish of each shot, this gives you edit room later - for example, if you want to fade between clips, but still have all the action, then you will start the fade before the action starts.

    HTH

    Correct Toto,
The camera creates different clips based on the stop and start as Paul described. The editing software will import the clips a separate clips and should show them accordingly.
Windows MovieMaker is free from the Microsoft site. Microsoft has stopped including it with current software and I believe they are not developing it any further, however it will work on Windows 10.
I think the latest and last version was in 2012.....could be wrong there but that`s the ball park.
Remember Toto.........it sounds complicated but it`s not really.......concentrate on one clip at a time. Clean them up how you like and use the software to join them up into a little movie. Practice makes perfect and you learn as you go. If you stuff it up, as we all do at some stage, it doesn`t matter, the clips can be reloaded into the software and start again.
I would suggest you load just one clip into your editing software at first. Give it a title, give it end credits and save it.....Done. That`s it in a nutshell!!!! Then move onto adding more clips into the movie.......same process.....it`s just bigger and longer....but the same.???.....with each attempt you will learn and grow more confident.
By the way folks.....I think it is important......just like an exhibition....to keep things moving in your movies.
I was watching a model rail movie recently, beautifully shot in HD.....British layout....and it was supposed to be a drivers eye view sequence. The first 20 seconds or more of the movie, the train just sat there waiting to move.....it could have been longer actually.....it seemed like an eternity. It may have been interesting for the guy who shot the clip but I`m sorry to say I was bored to tears waiting for something to happen. You have to grab the audiences attention immediately even if it`s only through dialogue over a still picture....but something has to be happening otherwise the viewer will just switch off......I did in the end.!!

I'll need to revert to my own software for the moment. I tried downloading the windows moviemaker and ended up with an infestation of pop ups. Tany cleared up a lot but there still seems to be a few and I might be wrong but they seem to be multiplying.

    Nightmare.

    Cheers for now

To download Moviemaker you have to go to the official Microsoft site , download windows essentials 2012 version, ( It doesn't say its compatable with Windows 10 but it does work . . . I just did it ) start the install but 'choose the programs to install' then un tick all boxes Accept MovieMaker and continue. Toms probably clicked on one of the 'advertised' sites and downloaded a browser add-on again :whatever:
Anyone know a good supplier of boxing gloves ?? No not to clip him round the ear but to slow him down on the keyboard :avatar:

    Thanks Guys,
The internet is full of traps unfortunately especially, when downloading software. Some free software comes bundled with all sorts of tool bar add ons etc.....which have to be rejected in the initial stages of the download otherwise you lose some control over your system.
The genuine Microsoft site should be trouble free though.????

    Thank you chaps,

Unfortunately the gremlins really have a hold this time and it will be a complete change over of my Solid a state Drive thingy that will be happening. It has been ordered. All my important software like my Movie Edit Pro, JMRI, Railroad and Anyrail should be recoverable through licence codes or similar so I'm not too worried.

I'll also take advantage of the situation and have windisease 10 adopted at the same time.

I shall have Microshaft movie maker installed properly at the same time.

    Cheers

    Toto
