G`day Folks, Welcome to another edition of Gormo`s Shed. This week we are looking at that product with the disgusting name of " Bullfrog Snot". It may be a disgusting name but it is a very good product in my opinion. I purchased a jar of the green liquid the other day because I want to make my own replacement traction tyres. Most of my locos have a good bit of age on them and finding a good fit with the current crop of ready made traction tyres at the model shop is not as easy as you may think. Sure you can get a tyre that will fit and do the job but my recent experiences find tyres that almost fit properly but not quite.??? So what could be better than painting the tyre onto the wheel. Perfect fit and coverage. I would suggest there is a bit of a knack to it and practice helps master the technique in no time at all. The product is expensive by my standards but there`s a heck of a lot of traction tyres in that little bottle. Anyway the video covers it in depth and keep this in mind.....I`ve now done three locos and they all work fine. The more you do, the better you become at applying the goo.!!! Thanks for that Gormo, now I know how to replace a tyre on my old model power diesel that has been sitting around due to poor traction on my 6% grade! Andrew Sandbar & Mudcrab Railway
No worries Andrew, I have been curious about this product for quite some time now and in most cases, when I`ve seen it on the shelf in the past, I`ve been put off by the cost of it. $39.00 a jar. But after using it, I think it`s money well spent. http://www.bullfrogsnot.com/faq.asp http://www.bullfrogsnot.com/vid_gallery.asp http://www.clickGormo
Definately one for the filed for future use ... I have traction tyres for my J83, but I have some old Hornby Cl 25 & 29 's that need rebuilding. Paul
Yes Paul, I had it filed for a while and decided it was time to give it a go. I have just finished a restoration and modification on a Mainline Warship and it is a very light weight loco. http://www.platform1mrc.com/view_post.php?post_id=23150 It also needed two traction tyres so the Snot was used. The Warship can pull five coaches up the incline to my Bamford terminus without any trouble at all.!!! I suppose standard tyres may give the same result but this stuff is grippy / sticky for lack of a better description. http://www.clickGormo
I was wondering if 'Maskol' or similar latex masking solution might do the same job. Might give that a try, as I have a bottle already! Keith.
Hello Gormo, May I ask where did you obtain your Bull Frog Snot from? Seems the local hobby shop has not even been informed of this product, so a seller must be around Sydney somewhere. I always try to shop local but it is a bit hard when there is nothing you require. Andrew Sandbar & Mudcrab Railway
Andrew, Casula Hobbies, Liverpool, NSW stock it http://www.casulahobbies.com.au/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=7968
G`day Andrew, Got mine from Woodpecker Model Railways at Pendle Hill in Sydney. http://woodpeckermodelrailways.com.au/shop/ You can probably get it on the Bay as well but the postage will be horrendous!!!! http://www.ebay.com.au/sch/Model-Trains/180250/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=bullfrog%20snot&rt=nc&LH_PrefLoc=2&_trksid=p2045573.m1684 http://www.clickGormo
Hi Gormo. Good video, well explained. I have a number of old locos with perished traction tyres and getting replacements is difficult in some cases. Ref application. Did you think it might be worth trimming the end of the cocktail stick to give a flat edge to the application? That might make smoothing the surface easier, and perhaps stop the tendency of the Snot to run up the inside flange? Cheers. Dave C
Quite possibly Dave, Every little bit of subtle improvement will help the process along to an even better result. http://www.clickGormo
I have used toothpicks which have a flattened cross-section for the few Bullfrog Snot applications I have done so far.
OK .....there`s another advocate for the flattened toothpick method. This has to be the way to go!!!... Thanks SRman http://www.clickGormo
