G`day Folks, I can`t take any credit for developing this method, and in fact the way I`ve gone about it is not quite as efficient as the original. Nevertheless, it works and gives a reasonable result for an absolute minimal cost per tree. I saw this method on a YouTube video and I`ve been keen for some time to give it a go. Well today was the day. I`ve made three trees today. Number two is the subject of the video and by the time I had come to the third tree, I decided to add a clamp to hold the wire whilst the wire was connected to the drill.......all will become clearer during the course of the video. Meantime I have installed my first two trees on the layout and I`ve inserted a couple of pics below. Tree one is in the middle front of the pic and tree two is the large sucker on the right. So there we are folks. The video below shows how it was done with wire, string, flocking and hairspray. Make Your Own Trees On YouTube http://www.clickGormo
Has to be one of the best Gormo's sheds I've seen yet. that was a fantastic " how to " on tree making and as usual what looks like an inexpensive way of creating them. Very informative video. I reckon a few would have a go at that. thanks again Gormo. cheers toto
Thanks Toto, There`s more that can be done along this line of creativity. I have some hemp rope that I`m going to try as well......maybe a future update on trees will be in the pipe line. I`m also working on weeds but that`s another story. http://www.clickGormo
Ingenious I've bookmarked the video to give it a go when I go back to my puzzle/plank in the winter. Ed
Great find Gormo I remember using this method back in the early 80s on the MKI version of my layout which was set in the summer, now that MKIII is set in late Autumn that method doesn't suit. I seem to remember I read about it in either Model Railway Constructor or Model Railways as they were the two mags I was reading at that time, I recall that I used to either wrap the wire around a nail in a board or clamp it in a vice and once the string was in the open ends went in the hand drill. A few turns of the handle (primitive technology by todays standards) and it was done. Great for knocking up a quick, easy and cheap woodland. Now I wonder why I chose Autumn apart from making life difficult for myself Jim
G`day Gary, All three actually plus there are other people doing similar things. Give it a go Ed....it`s easy!!! Jim the method may be old but so am I.........so it suits my age and my budget. I`m looking at mixing it up a bit now with other materials......we`ll see how that goes. I`ve just seen a youngster doing trees with steel wool.........lots of people are having a crack at doing their own trees.???? http://www.clickGormo
I've got some poplars behind the station to do. Looks like an awesome way to do it, Gormo. I reckon a quick dry brush with some grey on the trunks would really set them off too. Thanks for a great post. Reidy
Enjoyed the video and the trees look great. I have never had much luck using hairspray as a fixing devise though
