G`day Folks, Welcome to Gormo`s Shed Ep. 79 Yes..??.....running trains to a schedule.....lots of people do it and lots of people have their own methods for organizing it....be it cards, computers, rotating index cards..etc. or whatever floats your boat. This weeks episode is purely a demo of it working on my railway and is intended to bring the concept forward into your consciousness for consideration, regardless of what system you use. For myself, it has changed the whole ball game as opposed to just running trains around the roundy roundy, now trains arrive and depart with apparent purpose. The schedule could turn into a hobby itself and the trains could even become secondary pawns in the puzzle, such would be the appeal for some people.? So have a think about it.....try it if you like, or just park the idea in the old grey matter for future use. I will attach a copy of my schedule as a PDF below. Enjoyable and well thought out video Gormo. As an added extra why not work out a random locomotive choices, either shuffled cards or maybe a dice??There's always a weekend schedule as well!! Cheers Ron
Absolutely Ron, Anything is possible as I`m literally at the very beginning of this. http://www.clickGormo
Another great video Gormo A different style of timetabled running, it is very easy to follow by the look of, It was also good to see the trains running to a sequence that has a reasoning to at as well
And when you have the base schedule, completed, it's the addons that make it really interesting. For instance, if only you are operating the layout the schedule runs at your pace, however if you have additional operators, then ..... A freight could arrive at say step 5, and has to be shunted and ready to depart by say step 15, so the pressure is on Or with the automated shuttle, if you have it so it would be held up by a signal (with an isolating section) when it tries to enter the station, the last part of the previous step to the shuttle arriving at the station would be to change the signal to green, lifting the isolated section and allowing the movement to complete. As you say it makes life a little more interesting. Another gem Paul
Very well done Gormo. You have taken on a monster this week as its one thing explaining it but quite another trying to run the train whilst videoing the whole event too. There is no end to the variety that could be introduced into the sequences so it does not have to be repetitive. Very enjoyable http://www.click
Now that you have gone down this path of the hobby Gormo, now I see a clock arriving to time the trains & that is FUN!
Thanks for the suggestions guys, Chris I`ve made it as simple as I possibly can......mostly for me ......but also for little kids to follow. Paul...yes indeed....there is scope there to apply some pressure... I particularly like your suggestion about the signalling for the shuttle.....I can just see it waiting there for permission to come through to allow it to proceed. Toto......just a simple schedule like in the video really changes the way we operate....gives it a purpose if you like.....and adding other sequences or variations will actually make it feel like there is much more rolling stock than there actually is.......it`s quite a lot of fun actually. Filming and operating is quite challenging although believe it or not, the schedule helps in that regard. At least I don`t have to think about what to bring out next. Sol.....you`re scaring me now when you talk about bringing the clock onboard.... http://www.clickGormo
Great video Gormo, the possibilities are endless. Biggest restriction is how many trains you can store 'off scene'. It's the type of thing I wanted to do on Latton Fields, but with just a single main line and only two platforms it wasn't going to work. Must build myself an urban terminus Ed
Top how to Gormo , running to a schedule is the same as the real railway, I like the idea of introducing a scale clock to the equation! that would really get the thinking cap on. Cheer's, Pete.
G`day Folks, Thanks Ed & Pete... Ed the off scene storage is not really a problem for me fortunately. There are six free roads on the sliding traverser and the removable cassettes.......possibly.....10 maybe....but I`ve only built one at the present. Pete I`ve considered the clock a few times in the past and rejected it in favour of scheduling. It`s much easier especially with a one man operation. http://www.clickGormo
Good job on the videos Gormo. This one made me realise that running a schedule on my layout wouldn't work because of a track bottleneck. Fortunately I'm still at the stage to be able to adapt my track plan accordingly. Saved me some headaches later on. regards Jim
G`day Jim, Well I`m pleased that the video has revealed a potential problem that can be rectified on your track arrangement. Best to get in early with these things..... http://www.clickGormo
Excellent Gormo, I will have to make a similar schedule ,and try to follow that through. It must make our hobby more interesting ,and get the grey matter working . Thank you .
It sure does Sparky, This was a very simple schedule to begin with and Paul had suggested ways of adding more complexity, which is great, but at the end of the day it`s up to you how simple or hard you make it. The fundamental thing about it for me, is that all of a sudden the railway goes from just circulating random trains to a logical sequence of events. It transforms the running from playing about, to a serious task with a purpose. I liken it to a puzzle and I agree, it`s good for the grey matter. http://www.clickGormo
Hi Gormo, Just completed track alterations to remove bottleneck. What a difference. Thanks again for your timely advice. regards Jim
