    G`day Folks,

This week we have for you a simple technique for creating wagon loads, albeit coal or minerals or ore loads or even ballast I guess.??

The method involves cutting some foam rubber to suit the inside dimensions of your project wagon and thereby shaping it to suit .....painting it and then adding coal or whatever you choose.

This method is not new by any means and will be quite familiar to those who have been around for a while, however not everybody has the luxury of years of experience, so we`ll throw this in this week for the newbies.

One thing to look out for is cutting the foam rubber with a hot wire cutter. It was suggested to me some time ago, that an electric kitchen knife was ideal for this purpose, however my knife and my efforts have yielded rather poor results. Maybe I`m not holding my tongue to the correct side of my mouth or something, but every time I try, it`s a disaster.

One the other hand with the hot wire cutter set up in a jig, I can achieve quite a reasonable result.

So horses for courses....or in my case tools for fools.....:avatar::avatar::avatar:

    Looks good!
I use a similar technique for my loads but I use offcuts of the high density foam boards. This is rigid in use and quite easily goes in and out of the wagons, allowing a wagon to be "loaded" one way, then run back "empty" the other way. The loads can then be stored and interchanged with other "loads" on top, coal, sand, ballast, spoil, whatever you like.
    Cheers
    Tony

And if you add a magnet on the underside of the foam, a stick with a second magnet can easily remove the load.

Another classic video

Great how to Gormo. I wonder if SWMBO would notice if I shaved a couple of inches of foam of the settee. :scratchchin:

I will be using this for sure.

    Cheers

    Toto.

    Thanks Toto & Paul,

Toto just shave some foam rubber from the underneath of the cushion....SWMBO will never notice...

Just make sure you take the same amount off each cushion.....so as to keep them all even.

Everybody will just sit a bit lower in the saddle pardner :handshake:...Eeehah!!!

    Ooooh!!!!....I`m getting that sinking feeling...:scratchchin:

That's only the half of it - I'm sure the SWMBO net would pass the news far quicker than you could get here, and the punishment far more severe :avatar:

This is also a good method for hiding the 'added' weight when or if you use Kadee couplings. On average, I use around 20 grams of lead in each four wheel wagon. Where you can hide the weight in vent vans, covered wagons etc, you can't necessarily do the same in open wagons, so a load like this is perfect.

    Cheers, Gary.

The other great thing about using foam for loads is that it can be made to not make much difference to the total weight of the wagon. This can be important if you have already made open wagons at the correct weight for when empty, don't want to make them too heavy when "loaded" or vice-versa.

    Cheers

Yes, have to agree with Gary & Dr Tony,

There is a bit of scope here for adding weights and they will simply disappear under the load.

Now may I take you gentlemen back a little way to the episode about tarps. The same principle could be applied there whereby the tarp hides the weight as well. Combining tarped wagons and open loaded wagons into a train gives a bit of diversity and at the same time still disguises the added weights.
