    Hello

Eureka Models are doing a re-run of their AD60 Beyer-Garratt locomotive. This is a beautiful locomotive, and I am looking at purchasing one.

This is not a cheap model at around $1300 with sound fitted, but seems like a very good model.

Before I commit, I would like some feedback from members who own, or have owned previous runs, or know of this model from Eureka.

    Thank you
    Steve

    Hi Steve,
Yes ... I have one of these Eureka AD60's. I bought it second hand on eBay last year. I can't see any evidence that it was used much (if at all). The box and paperwork are in perfect condition and the loco was wrapped in the normal protective plastic sleeves and in mint condition. Mine is DCC with sound and the photo below is my actual model (photographed by my son-in-law). I paid $1325 for it which by the sound of the re-issue price is about right. The sound decoder is a QSI Quantum Q1a and the Manual is version 4.1 dated 20 May 2006. Other paperwork in the box is dated 17 July 2006.

I have seen these go for over $1600 on eBay and have seen them advertised for much more. One guy in the USA was advertising one (I think it was a different brand) for over $3600 USD earlier this year (don't know if he got it).

Unfortunately I can't tell you much about operating it as I don't have a layout at present and have only run it on a 1200mm test track. It runs well and sounds great. The re-issue will likely have upgraded decoders and motors.

I am also building a DJH kit version of this locomotive (white metal and brass). So ... you can see I am somewhat obsessed  with the AD60. It is about 15% complete but life has gotten in the way at the moment and it is packed away. I think I paid $650 for the kit. These models (when built) also bring high prices.

So bottom line, I think the AD60's are both a wonderful model and a good investment. It is good that they are re-issuing them as they are currently
    quite scarce (hence the price).

Hope all this helps. Good luck with it ...

    Hi Chris.

Thanks you very much for your feedback. I totally agree, the AD60's are an amazing machine and make a great model. I have seen 6029 at Steamfest in Maitland a few years ago and more recently at Central Station this year with 3801.

I also do not have a full layout yet, only one section of about 6m of dual gauge and less of H0e gauge that I can run H0 and H0e trains on.

I saw (on Platform 1) an AD60 on the Dargan layout of Richard (Davoetype), and knew I wanted one on my layout. It just looked great.

My layout is essentially Australian, with a museum fleet (H0 Shay), and a bit of H0e thrown in as a tourist railway with 2 x Roco locomotives, winding up to a higher level, quarry etc (as planned).

I have seen the DJH AD60 kit at Hobbyland in Hornsby. This is (or was) for sale at just under $1000 from memory. I was tempted but not yet ready for a build as complex as that.

I have advised the "Treasurer" of my intended purchase and there was not to much reaction/shock, so it will go ahead as planned.

I have a Eureka Models CPH CTH Rail Motor set. This is a high quality set, so I think the brand does build a quality product.

I really appreciate your considered feedback.

    Regards
    Steve
