F5 67201 running for the first time.

Here is my F5 running for the first time on the Moor Monkton York branch of the Guild. The loco ran faultlessly pulling three of John Lundie's LMS suburban non corridor coaches. I built 67201 as a radial tank from Big Jim's kits and the loco negotiated the Clubs 6' radius curves quite easily and without any problems. The F5 was painted by John Lundie as at the time I hadn't bought an air brush. Moor Monkton is located off the A59 Harrogate road just past Poppleton and the Club meet periodically in the village hall. Photo with kind permission of Paul Bartlett

 

Thanks Ron, I was impressed as the F5 was my first O Gauge loco build, the club members all liked it too as there was a great percentage of RTR loco's mainly Heljan, Dapol and Minerva although someone brought in a WD 2-8-0 kit built loco... very nice it was too.

 

No sorry Pete I haven't, Paul Bartlett took the photo and I'm fairly certain he only took the one. What I will do is bring the F5 again to another running session and take pictures myself. Hopefully also my Dapol Jinty will have changed identity to 47606 which was a long time Stoke Alsager engine 5E. The Club's next member running day is 14th April which sadly I cannot make.

I thought 47606 sounded familiar and come to think of it I had the same Triang Jinty too... but that wasn't the reason I chose this number.

 

In the book An Illustrated History of Stoke and North Staffordshire Railways by Alan Baker, Irwell Press 2000, on page 46 there is a bunker view of Jinty 47606 passing through Silverdale station. The caption reads "Class 3F 0-6-0T No 47606, a long time member of the Stoke fleet (at this date shedded at Alsager, however) coming off the Audley branch in April 1961. This working is presumed to be empty coal wagons for either Holditch or Silverdale colliery, routed via the Audley line from Alsager to avoid having to travel via Stoke. This was the usual practice until the Chord line was opened at Madeley, after which traffic from these pits was marshalled at Crewe rather than Alsager, and joined the Market Drayton line via the Chord rather than via the Audley line. This was of course the death knell for the line. Now Alan Baker should know and since my layout is based at Elton Crossing on the line from Alsager (Lawton Junction) to Sandbach thus that is the inspiration for giving my Dapol Jinty its new identity. Anyway there we go.

Yesterday Rob asked for a picture showing the radial truck assembly arrangement for the LNER F5, so with a bit of time spare here it is. Basically it is all quite a simple structure, there are no side springs it is just the truck that is held on its pivot point but without the ability to swing sidways. There is about 2mm lateral movement but that is all, effectively the loco is an 8 wheeled engine or 0-8-0 without all the coupling rods fitted. The kit is of course by Jim McGowen of Connoisseur Kits. Incidentally I thought I might as well make the box for the loco to go in.

 

Ah you lucky bloke Paul, those Wren locos fetch a fortune these days, the nearest I got was an 8F and a BR Standard 4 Tank in LMS crimson. Now 46254 City of Stoke on Trent would be brilliant in 7mm but I'll carry on dreaming a while longer yet. One day I keep thinking trouble is at this rate I'll run out of "one days" the speed at which I'm building stuff.

 

Now Pete here are a couple of photos taken today of the F5. I've just noticed 67201 seems to have a kink in the running plate... must have had a rough shunt somewhere in East Anglia...
