    Hi All,

I have just become a customer of our sponsor Ellis Clark having noted that he had a couple of Finney A1/3 kit's for sale. I am now the proud owner of one of them.

The kit is complete but the chassis for the tender has been started. It says to a high standard but we will see. As it happens about 3 or 4 weeks ago I bought a Finney coal rail tender so worst case I can use that. I will post pictures when it arrives.

I rang myself to check they still had it before placing the order but it was another chap that answered. I am looking forward to it. I now have the full set of Finney LNER locos plus the Duchess.

I saw a Dave Andrews Stannier ...... it took me all my time to keep my finger of the button ......... but I did. I need to be careful at the moment. Gutted as I would have loved to have had it.

I chased up the tender that Ellis was to provide for the Duchess. he has ordered it from Gladiator and it should be here soon. This may be your first commission once I'm back in work.

    cheers

I take it from your "when I'm back in work" means that nothing suitable has come your way yet?

Nothing secured but a few irons in the fire. I have a definite interview being lined up for about a fortnight time. Very promising. One or two other possibilities but things are very slow moving. Holidays don't help as that slows the process down as well.

    It'll start moving soon.

    Cheers

Ah yes, it will start to really slow down at work here too. Not that I will complain of course but it does make it hard to get anything done.

Well holidays are a rarity for me Rob, right now I'm flat out with work and am turning jobs away because physically I cannot keep up, so its a case of picking and choosing the best stuff. I'd thought some time ago about training an apprentice but quite frankly its a lot of grief and a lot of responsibility. I've got a few more years yet but am on the wrong lifestyle time frame to help the employment statistics :avatar:

    Hi Toto,

David's kit's have a great reputation (some of the Gladiator range were designed by David). The only one that I know has an issue is the LMS 2P which I believe needs a bit of work to get the cab to fit right.

I must confess that had I been able to stretch to it I would have bought the second Finney kit too, it's a bridge too far at the minute.

Yes, they seem to have got a bit of a collection of new kits listed. I'll be interested to see what's involved in the Stannier build. I have two which have been built already, one needs a good service and possibly a respray as the paint job is a bit past it's best I think. The other I think is Bachmann / sancheung and is absolutely mint. I have a Zen Buddah decoder to go in it but need to work out how to take it apart yet. :avatar:it's the pride of my steam fleet at the moment.

    Cheers

    Toto

Onto the promised photo of what's in the boxes (The loco and tender come as separately purchased items when bought originally).

First the Great Northern Railway Coal Rail Tender.

Now when I bought this I knew that the tender chassis had been started and built to a "professional" standard. As we have all no doubt experienced just because someone makes a living doing a job and are therefore a professional that doesn't always make them good at it.

As I said on another thread I had a cunning plan which I will repeat here for completeness. About 4 weeks or so ago I bought an untouched Finney GNR coal rail tender kit via the GOG sales and wants. It was at a good price £120 inc postage) which is a £60 saving on new.

My original plan having bought the tender kit was (knowing that Finney7 were planning to re-release the A1/A3/A4 kits at Telford) to buy an A1 loco kit to go with the tender to recreate a scene which Chris plans to paint in the coming months

Therefore in buying the Loco and tender from Ellis my get out was the I could either sell the tender kit on as is or build it and sell it on and use the untouched one with the loco.

I am happy that aside from straightening the vacuum pipe which must have been bent slightly in transit I am happy with the construction so far and won't be taking it to bits and starting again.

There may well be some minor detail parts missing but time will tell.

Then on to the loco itself. The kit can be built as either an A1 or an A3 mine will be an A1 "Doncaster" which didn't get converted to an A3 until during the war.

The whitemetal castings look very clean and well shaped. There seems to be two smokebox saddles and one is better than the other. After an enquiry to Richard Lambert of Finney7 the smokebox saddle is one of the castings that has been upgraded so I will probably indulge in a better one.

next the exquisite brass and nickel castings.

More castings and the other sundries plus the compensated hornguides

Some nice extras from CPL Products

Finally a sample of the loco etches - this was the only sheet I could get out without ripping all the tissue of which I am loathe to do because it encourages the etches to tarnish when you do and means more work later.

Now the observant amongst you will note that there are another set of horn cheeks included on the chassis etch. This is for those who wish to build it with a rigid chassis but still have the horn cheek detail visible between the frames.

This thread will now be dormant for quite sometime I suspect....

I believe so Pete, CPL is now owned by Paul Bambrick and I am pretty sure that he will be at Telford.

I can highly recommend CPL products, although to be honest I haven't bought anything since Paul took over all my dealings were with Pat Legg.
