I decided to make a few architectural changes to the building. I rearranged the doorways serving the platform, reducing the single doorways to two rather than four, but I did gain two extra windows ! :whatever:

^ The new printed sections cut down to size ready for sticking to a sheet of 3mm foam core.

On the upper section, I reduced the amount of windows from 32, down to 24, but then again, I gained four more (2 x large, 2 x small) for the centre parapet section of the building...

^ All the pieces glued down in place. The upper windows are grouped in lots of six. I think it looks a lot less cluttered with the reduction. Having less windows will make it easier to cover in brick paper as there will be less joins. The arch in the centre has nothing to do with the model. It is on the print out only.

^ The tedious task of cutting out the window and door openings. Forty-one individual openings that needed the knife through them three times each. That amounts to a lot of cutting ! Whilst I was doing this, I was thinking of Kimbo's Lord Street Depot building and how much cutting he went through !

^ Finally !! :worship: All cut out ready for paper... Which makes me think how many of those individual window surrounds I need to cut from the Scalescenes Large Station Building kit.., and then there is the windows with those fiddly cross bars.... :whatever:

    Cheers, Gary.

Apart from visiting Gormo this weekend to run a few trains, I got stuck into facing up the Parcel Depot with Scalescenes paper.

Unfortunately the length of each side of the building is longer than a sheet of Scalescenes brick paper, so this had to be remedied in two parts each side. The Scalescenes paper is only deep enough to span from the very bottom to the first stepped sections along the roof line. Hence not doing the full building height. But I had decided to do something different on the centre section.

The white gaps between the brick sheets shown above, will not be seen in the long run. The quoins from the Scalescenes Large Station Building kit are used on the extreme corners.

I decided to sheet the very centre section of the building in red brick, similar to this building in Sydney. (photo taken from a moving train).

Brick buttrusses were made from 1mm thick card and 6mm wide, covered in appropriate Scalescenes paper. Soldier edging was used to form the decorative parapet, shown below.

The sandstone window lintels and the window pillars (above) are from the Large Station Building kit. Other window lintel sections are from the Brown Brick sheet and soldier edging was used for all the window ledges and doorway lintels. Using more of the quoins from the kit, I made up some wall capping. This is simply the quoins wrapped around 1mm thick card, 5mm wide.

The white sections shown above will be covered once I build up the verandah awning, which will span the full length of the building.

Next job on the cards is the tedious job of cutting out all the windows...

SWMBO has recently purchased a Silouette Cameo cutting machine, but she has had little time on it. So I won't be holding my breath waiting to have them cut by the machine.

I have purchased the Scalescenes Door kit (TX00d), so once I choose what doors I want to use, these will be sorted at the same time as the windows.

In the meantime, I think I'll attempt the awning....

    Cheers, Gary.

Very impressive Gary, your doing a cracking job. Brings back memories of long nights, sore fingers and plenty of used blades. Great use of the templates again, makes for an interesting building when you swap and change things around, and looking at the prototype picture your on to another winner for sure.

:gday:Great work there Gary, this really will be a great layout when completed. So, When's this layout's first exhibition debut? And a better question, what is it going to be called?:)

    Thanks guys.

I have a name, but I just can't say it yet. The name is in one of the requirements for the competition... That's all I'm saying for now ! ;);)

I'll let everyone have a guess at what its name will be... :scratchchin:

AS for exhibiting, I will take it along to Liverpool this year as a demo layout, or a 'How to build a layout simply' demo.

    Cheers, Gary.

A little more done on the Parcel Depot today...

The awning was constructed from card, using three 570mm lengths of card to form a right angle triangle, with supports sandwiched in between. It is 142 scale feet long and spans 90% of the front of the building. The depth of the awning is 11 scale feet.

I was intending to use the brackets that come with the Large Station Building parcel depot awning section, but these are only 6'6" long with a flat top surface. I do prefer the skillion style of roof.

^ All the pieces to make the body of the awning/verandah roof.

^ Simple construction methods used to form a solid triangular box. I think box is the right word to use ??

Below. The awning fitted to the parcel depot. Flashing was made by cutting a print out of tarmacadam or bitumen into strips. I glued the strips to the roof before fitting the whole awning onto the building.

As can be seen above, the windows have been added as well as some doors. The larger doors will go on later (tomorrow) as they are still curing from gluing the paper print out to card. The door on the left has been cut 'open', to add some interest to the model.

Down pipes and guttering will be added at a latter date as well, then some judicial weathering to make it all dirty.

    Cheers, Gary.

Nice work Gary , it reminds me a bit of a building that has inspired me to make a plan for a goods/parcel depot, ( I reckon most of us have these ideas bouncing about in our heads, mind you the great flounder seems to put them into practice as soon as he thinks of them ;) ), I digress, if I do build it, it will be in O scale so I need to keep an eye on your progress to give me an idea of size, I will have to double it in length and height, here,s the building.

A little compression may be needed , what do you think?

These covered platforms are part and parcel of the same depot.

    Great pics Pete.

That would make a great build, even if the facade is low relief and the covered platforms formed the main part of the layout. I can see plenty of detail that can be added. I guess that is the beauty of O gauge.
I would relish the challenge of constructing such a building, in any scale excluding N gauge, far too small for me !

    Cheers, Gary.
