Now before I proceed and whilst I remember ..... this is for Kev ( BR Blue )

flux and solder being used as below .....

Now .... on we go ..... first I stripped the motor and gearbox out of the chassis as the mashima 1833 and the markits 40 - 1 are to big.

    I will be using a mashima 1628 and a slaters gearbox a 36 - 1 which caters for a 3 / 16 axle. more on that when it arrives.

I decided to bore a hole at the cab end for an additional fixing between chassis and floor plate and used a 10 ba screw.

Then 2 small hole either side of the front fixing which holds the chassis to the floor plate. The 2 small hole are to connect the front of the cast boiler to the foot plate with two self tappers.

The chassis / footplate nutage gets in the way when you offer the boiler up so I had to drill a hole in the underside of the boiler connecting plate in which to " lose " the nutage.

We then move on to the spectacle plate at the front of the cab .....

duly soldered in to place .....

    and another.

Then we do a test fit of the boiler ......

which lines up nicely where it is meant to at both ends .....

and that is as far as I have got at the moment .... time for a read at the destructions to see whats next ..... moire later as it happens.

    cheers

now we move on to the smoke box front .....

and first on is the cylinder valve chest cover .......

next up align the smoke box door using a piece of wire threaded through the smoke box and the door itself .... pre drilled holes.

there .... soldered in place. next up is the hinges ....

I will be drilling the hinge holes out and fitting a bit wire and cropping it to a suitable length to look like the hinge pin .... but that is for later ....

and a shot of the assembly against the fron of the smoke box to give an idea of what it looks like. It is slightly propped up to free my hands for the camera so it could look a little odd.

thats it for now .... back to the destructions .... and onward.

    cheers

A 1227 motor will probably do the trick Toto... available from our very special friends who supply motors :avatar:

This is an impressive build... I really like the smokebox laminations and drilling the hinges to take a wire bolt.:tophat::tophat::tophat:

    Hi yorkie,

the 1626 or whatever from slaters is already on order. thanks anyway.

well in y true tradition I was blundering on clueless as to how the coal hatch door fitted firmly believing that it fitted to the back heads. What an arse. after a little searching for a suitable prototype on the internet I saw that the coal opening was in fact a coal bunker opening which is side mounted in the cab, not a boiler opening, what a twat.

anyway, this revelation helped enormously in the cab starting to make sense and the cab build is now underway. I'll load up some progress pictures shortly.

    cheers

Glad it all came clear for you Toto... I'll look forward to seeing pictures later. Sometimes I get moments like that when I cannot fathom out what goes where, it does all work out in the end. Not done anything on the pannier today as I've been gardening all day, hopefully tomorrow will see more modeling done... at least I managed to press rivet the tanks and resolder them back in position.

    Excellent .....

Now as promised the progress photo's ....

first of all I worked out from a photograph on the internet that the bunker door was an internal piece down one side .....

    like so .... and ...

and then the back wall became a little more obvious now being able to work out the distance from the edge of the footplate .....

    and another ....

    and another .....

and one last one for now .....

Tomorrow will see the sides going on. These are pieces which require bending, not quite 90 degress .... and .... need a slight curve introduced into them like the prototype had ...... could be my biggest challenge yet .... but .... thats for tomorrow as I get the feeling that if I attempt them now ( as I am dying to do to progress it and see it take more shape ) I'll end up rushing it and possibly making a mess of it .... so .... patience is required .... another new skill for me ... :avatar:

cheers for now and I hope its been enjoyable so far

An after thought .... I missed a trick with the coal bunker install it would have been quite easy to scratch a couple of guide rails and a sliding door for the bunker opening. Its not contained in the kit but would have made a rather nice extra ..... and no, im not taking it apart again. I'll include it in the Ramsbottom 0-4-2 build. :avatar:

The cab isn't enclosed yet so you could still add them without taking it apart.;):p

But I would suggest not making the same mistake I did on my first loco kit and where I tried to add every detail and lost my way with it. It took 3 years to finish that build - I should have done like you and built it straight from the box as per the instructions...

I think I will on this occasion Rob as it seems to be going quite well. I'll make do with standard for now but will definitely incorporate it and anything else that I can think of in the 0-4-2 build. More opportunity there as it has the crane as well which should open things up a bit.

    Looking forward to it

    Cheers

    Well,

before any progress was made today, it was a case of one step forward and another step back.

The back wall to thre rear of the loco cab had been positioned centrally initially in the absence of any clear instruction or pictorial evidence. when tryinmg to fit the side sections, they did not line up. Then ...... the eureka moment dawned. When you look at the inside of the back wall there is a dotted etched line ( which I wondered what was about .... with no explanation in the destructions ) I realised that the coal bunker section should align with this line. However, in order to confirm prior to taking it apart, I decided some research was required.

So ... Paul l ( Dundee ) and I set about ( via skype ) searching for an image that showed the rear of the loco ( hens teeth springs to mind ) but Dundee :whatever: found one ( as posted above ) which gives enough to show that the ends of the back wall are not quite the same.

So .... to cut a long story short ......

    off the bugger came .......

and back on it went .... this time .... slightly off centre ..... and the first of the sides ..... the long side ..... went on perfectly aligned ..... problem solved.

    happy chappy .....

and again ..... then .... the shorter side went on .....

    and another .......

and a view from behind ......

    and another .....

and one showing the entry point to the cab ......

and with the boiler in place ......

from a different view point .....

    and behind .....

and one from the front with the boiler frontage placed up against .....

and that where I am at the moment,

Now .... coal bunker extension and beading to finish off the tiop of the etches. Oh .... and handrails.

    more later ........

    cheers for now

Just as an aside, when looking for info on the Ramsbottom .... up popped an advert for laurie Griffins casts. he does a father nice boiler back head for tghis loco wit some controll items so whilst it is too late for this build, I will buy a set for the Ramsbottom 0-4-2 and also do the detail for the coal bunker door.

    cheers

The footplate area looks really good... happy to know this issue has been resolved now and the side plates went on without a hitch.

When first looking at it, you would automatically assume that the rear cab panel would be situated centrally. It's only when looking closer that you see the difference in the panel width on either side of the hatch are. When you measure it it us about 1.5 to 2 mm of a difference and it makes all the difference to the build.

Tomorrow will probably be handrails and suspension springs amongst other bits and pieces. I may start prepping the boiler for the various fittings as well. I'll get them all ready, fettled if need be prior to mixing up two part epoxy as I wont get much time with it once mixed and it goes off.

Hopefully the new motor and gearbox combination should arrive from Slaters by Monday/ Tuesday as that will soon be holding me back as I need to test fit before final fut of the boiler etc.

    Anyway ..... getting there.

    Cheers

OK, back in the shed ....

thought I'd start on one of the easier tasks to get the juices flowing so ..... the hinge bolts for the front boiler door ...

    and here we are ....

to start off, i drilled three holes through the hinge pin positions and through the back of the boiler door. then threaded a bit of 0.9mm brass rod through ....

applied some flux and solder from the back so not to gunk the visible front side up ....

snipped the rod to length and gave it a little dressing with a needle file ....

    repeat 3 times ....

    and there we have it.

job done ...... now on to the coal bunker extension and hand rails etc.

    more as it happens
