    Nah it`s OK Sol,
The old bloke that lives there is as deaf as a post and is an avid train spotter plus, Bamford services end at 7:00pm when the last commuter pulls in for the day.
See mate.....there is always a convenient history to go with these odd decisions.:avatar:

    G`day Folks,
The main roof supports were cut out and fitted today. Every second one has a notch cut out which will allow a chimney to fit down through the roof and be secured properly.

    IMG20220607113722.jpg

Then the main roof was cut out and currently is just sitting in place. Slots are cut for the chimneys to fit through. The chimneys will be five layers of card thick, however on the end walls I only need to add four layers to the existing chimney piece that is part of the walls.
The annexes have had a sub roof fitted. The sub roof packs out the top of the gables properly to meet the side walls as the side walls are fitted to the outside ends of the front wall.
The front edge of the sub roof also will represent a barge board once the top roof is fitted over the sub roof.

    IMG20220607182828.jpg

I`ve sealed some roof slate sheets from Scalescenes today so that they can be fitted in the next couple of days. I will cut strips of slates and overlay each layer as they progress towards the top of the roof as recommended by Scalescenes, so I think they will look the part. Also need to cut the top roof layers for the annexes.
I have a social commitment tomorrow, so probably not much more progress for a couple of days.
The terraces and the area where they sit will be known as " Natalie`s Terraces & Gardens " ....named after my daughter. So there will be some gardens and green spaces built between the terraces and the railway.
    More as it happens

    G`day Folks,
Well I finally finished the main roof for the larger of the two buildings.
This has definitely been an epic task even though it doesn`t look much here in the pic.
It must be the largest roof I`ve tackled so far with this method. It`s 450mm long ( 18 inches in the old money ) with each strip / row of slates added and then overlapped by the next, working from the bottom of the roof towards the top.
I might whinge about it, but you do add more texture and consequently, realism, by doing it this way. The exposed edges were also blacked before the strips were fitted, so we don`t see any white edges.
Anyway, I`m glad to have this part of the build finished.

    IMG20220610202258.jpg

Of course the roof has now been placed upside down on the cutting mat with some weights sat on top for the evening. This hopefully will flatten it out and make it easier to fit to the building.

    IMG20220610202309.jpg

I now have to make up the two end chimneys before I fit this roof. The roof needs to be a snug fit between the two chimneys to slightly force straight the two end wall tops.
Then probably move onto the the annex roofs. The slates for the annexes will be a walk in the park compared to this main roof, so I`m looking forward to that.
So as usual....more as it happens.

Gormo. I have used that process myself & it is time consuming & one can't let your mind wander or you forget to blacken the edges or not get the strip in the right place & you tell the idiot that is doing the job, off !
So far a bl..dy good job there mate.

    Thanks Sol,
Yes mate, it`s pretty much as you described it.....a bit of a do your head in job. The only way through it is to keep at it and concentrate....:faint:

    G`day Folks,
    Back into production again today.
Being indoors and warm helps the motivation. On the subject of warmth, my heater in the train room is not busted, as I mentioned in a previous post, but rather had the settings switch set wrong :faint:, so I can again, once more, turn it on to run trains and be nice and toasty in the process....
Unfortunately, I do not usually do any model building in the train room but rather in my workshop, which is a cold hole at this time of the year, so indoors for me and model building for a while yet.
    So.....what`s the latest you say..?
I have started building chimneys. The first two to be done were the chimneys in the end walls as they are crucial to getting the roof on and spacing the roof correctly.
So this pic below shows them fitted with a paper overhang waiting to be trimmed off.

    IMG20220611113558.jpg

Whilst the glue was drying, I set about making the extra three chimneys required to finish the roof. I draw up the chimney slices on my drawing program and print them out, stick them to card ( UHU Glue ) and then cut them out. The slices are then glued to each other, five altogether in this case per chimney. I Black the tops around the edges so we do not see any White showing through once the brick paper is applied.

    IMG20220611134247.jpg

The brick paper is held square against the first face and I fold the paper around the corner to make the first bend. I then remove the paper and make a proper fold squeezing the paper between my fingers. Each fold is done in the same way and then the brick paper is glued to the chimney ( PVA ). When dry, I cut off the paper flap.

    IMG20220611140437.jpg

This method gives fairly crisp corners without any overlapping paper. The cut edge can be Blacked to hide it more effectively.

    IMG20220611140911.jpg

Then it was back to these paper flaps on the end chimneys.

    IMG20220611141007.jpg

Then checked the cut outs in the roof for the three central chimneys. I had to remove a very thin slice of roof in each case for a snug fit. Calculations for these gaps are difficult in the drawing stage, because you get variations in the thickness of the card, so one has to take an average and go for it.
The result usually is a slot that is too tight, because the printing process, plus adding brick paper, adds six layers of paper to the thickness of the chimney, so the chimney usually is too thick.
This is not necessarily a bad way to do it, because it`s fairly easy to take a minute amount off the slot in the roof to give you a snug fit. Much easier than trying to fill a gap that is too big.
Anyway, once all that lot was sorted out, I worked out a way to support the structure so that I could glue the roof into place. The roof was glued and now we wait.
This should add a further level of strength and rigidity to the structure, so we`ll see how it goes.?

    A quick update.
You can see here below the roof gluing was successful. After I removed it from it`s clamps, I started fitting the other three chimneys. I sat a straight edge on top of and suspended between the two end chimneys, to make sure that they would all be the same height. I then lined them up by eye to get them all vertical. It was just a matter of running a line of sight between the two end chimneys to do this.

    IMG20220611191501.jpg

I`ve now moved onto doing the rooves for the annexes, a much easier task than the main roof.......only three to go on this building.

    IMG20220611205500.jpg

So we`ll see what eventuates today....:scratchchin:

Wow, what a difference that roofing makes. Well worth the extra work to achieve a result. :hammer::hammer::hammer:

    Hey Gormo,

The terracotta capping on the small roof looks really good :worship: ... are you going to do the same on the main roof?

    Thanks Phil,
It`s good now that it`s finished and I got a bit quicker at it as I moved along, I think..???
You start refining your processes and get a bit of a rhythm going because it`s a repetitive process.
Anyway.....here`s an example of an annex roof. You get the texture by overlapping the rows of slates and indeed you can take it one step further by cutting all the vertical slate joins once the strips are applied, if you so wish. I have done this on one building in the past and it`s a mind bending job......hardly worth the trouble unless you are building it to be displayed at Pendon.
    https://pendonmuseum.com/

    IMG20220612144852.jpg

So....motoring along today with the goal of getting the annex rooves done. I get four strips of slates for the annex from one cut of the Scalescenes slates sheet.
Before I cut a long strip from the sheet I Black the edge......it`s easier than doing the small strips and you can almost do it in one swipe of the texta along the strip.

    IMG20220612144953.jpg

Managed to get all the annexes done with ridge capping as well

    IMG20220612153050.jpg

    IMG20220612153131.jpg

    IMG20220612153204.jpg

This pic just highlights the corner detail you can get with the overlapping paper method. It`s still not perfect but it stands up a lot better than a Kit corner joint.

    IMG20220612160721.jpg

You can also see how the sills flow from the outside back to the window almost looking like one continuous piece. I am pleased I tried this method and will probably use it again in the future.

    IMG20220612160835.jpg

I think with this particular building, it will be best to fit guttering and down pipes next, rather than fit the brick fences first. The access will be better, even though it`s tempting to press ahead with the fences and gates.......Patience required....:scratchchin:
    So that`s it for today

    G`day Chris,
Yes I will put it on the main roof as well. I need to get the back on first, so I can overlap it.
I had a thought today about the back. Originally I was going to paint it Black, however visually, it may look like this Black abyss above the control panel, so I think I will do it with the same brick paper and I think the control panel will blend in better.
Plus....if I don`t like the brick.....I can paint it Black.

Building number two is under way as well now
I need to get off to Bunnings tomorrow to get some more Matt Spray Sealer. I have to seal some more roof slates, brick sheets and some signs.
Oh well all in good time......:scratchchin:
The little Grandsons are visiting next weekend, so I had better clean up the train room and get everything organized for a running session. I may even be finished on the buildings by then, but don`t hold your breath waiting for that to happen.....we`ll see.

    G`day Folks,
I`ve got my supplies in now from Bunnings and have sealed some sheets of slates and bricks.
While they are drying, I have moved onto other things. Sills and lintels added, annex assembled and fitted, paving fitted and roof trusses as well. Chimney blanks have been cut out and also the main roof. This time with the main roof, I`ve printed some guide lines for the slates on the actual roof drawing. Scalescenes supply a sheet of guidelines with the slate sheet, however printing my own onto the drawing may be even easier...????....we`ll see how that pans out....:scratchchin:

    IMG20220614200512.jpg

There is still lots to do, but as the build progresses and parts are joined together, it seems to get a little easier.

    G`day Folks,
The next stage on the small building was to fit the sub roof on the annex as in the pic below.
We also stacked and glued the components for the three chimneys and then wrapped them in brick paper.

    IMG20220615113121.jpg

Roof slates were applied to the small roof for the annex and then the roof and ridge capping was also fitted to the building.

    IMG20220615170600.jpg

Next slates had to be applied to the main roof and this was a chance to try out the printed guide lines properly.

    IMG20220616162151.jpg

And it works really well, so I will be using this method in future scratch builds.
The roof is only sitting in place at the moment waiting to be fixed permanently

    IMG20220616170602.jpg

I will do another post with further updates.

Ridge capping has been applied to the larger of the two buildings and of course this means that the back of it is finished as well.
The back will show up further down the page.

    IMG20220616160034.jpg

The plaster top coat that was occupying the footprint where the buildings will sit was removed with a chisel back to bare baseboard.

    IMG20220616160315.jpg

A test fit was done with buildings to make sure that they sit right, and this main building is now being tested with it`s back fitted.
So far, no visual clues that there is a control panel sitting inside this building.

    IMG20220616160357.jpg

    IMG20220616160434.jpg

And here it is from the operating side.

    IMG20220616160414.jpg

From this angle only a slight suggestion of the control panel.....you can see the knobs and switch levers sticking out.

    IMG20220616160426.jpg

    And from the other end.

Yes I know what you mean.......I had the same feeling......:scratchchin:
There will be a totem going on for a start and maybe some old railway posters / advertising posters, or possibly a track plan although that seems a bit illogical with the track plan on the panel just below.?

    Dear Gormo,
your SCP and terraced housing block has come up a treat, and I like Chris M's suggestion re the Graffiti Removal image as well !

This is a very good article on integrating a Control Panel into a layout, well done on an outstanding effort,

    Best wishes and regards, Echidna.

G`day Echidna and thanks for your comments.
Yes I think Chris is right in suggesting it needs something.
I have a totem ( Bamford ) that will be going onto the wall in the middle......so that`s one thing.
I have also been looking at my collection of posters and mulling through what might look good.
On top of all that I have been experimenting with the transparency effect that my drawing program has, and I can now lay a faded poster over a brick wall to make it look like it`s been there too long.....:avatar:
So I`ll get there by hook or by crook, and it won`t look like that vast expanse of brick wall just waiting for somebody to paint on there " Foo was here "....:avatar:
    Cheers and all the best
