Hi all, For general branch line movement on restricted lines, did the GWR move cattle around in open wagons or was it solely the closed cattle wagon. I have seen some mention about small animals being moved in siphon G wagons, however this may be incorrect. I'am not bothered about mainline running. I have looked in all may GWR books and can find nothing other than a slight mention that cattle where moved by open wagon in the 1800s Is anybody able to help, Richard
Hi Richard, I can't advise personally but it's just a matter of time until someone with the answer chips in. Cheers Toto
Hi Richard One of the Videos we watched recently on a Thursday train night had cattle in open wagons I think the comment was due to excess numbers and not enough available cattle wagons. They looked like 7 planks. Ask David if he rembers what the video was.
Don't know if this helps Richard, but it looks like after 1904 all cattle wagons had a roof. (scroll down to livestock) http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/gansg/4-rstock/04arstock4.htm Ed
As an interesting side to this conversation, LGB garden railway trains had a sound card biult into the cattle wagons. When the wagons were shunted or moved suddenly the cattle sound would moo and clump around. That would be a different addition for any layout. Andrew Sandbar & Mudcrab Railway
