    I have been aiming to learn Fusion 360 for some time, but avoided starting (as if I need an excuse not to start :whatever:) before the Passenger tank was completed, well its damn close so .......

    I find it easier to learn something if I have a reason to do it .......

    And hear's mine, I decided to build some Highland Railway wagons to go with the Passenger tank, looking on the Gauge O Guild drawing library I found drawing Nos 3809, 3810 & 3811, duly ordered them up and is now the subject of this thread.

    First up from drawing 3809 is the HR 7 ton timber wagon Type L with falling ends.

    I scanned the image into the PC, then loaded it into Fusion as a canvas, and calibrated it to the overall length over the buffers of 19' 0" (133mm in 7mm).

    [IMG]

    So far so good .......

    Now this is my first attempt at Fusion 360, I normally use 123D, and must admit i've been tempted to switch back, however I'll keep repeating I must go on, I must go on.......

    Not sure if this was the best way, but then created a sketch for the top plank, extruded to 1mm thick, and then applied a fillet of 0.2mm to the edges.

    the process was repeated for the two remaining planks / beam

    [IMG]

    Next the braces were added in the same manner, at first I thought they were just bits of metal strapping, er no, after looking at a couple of photo's they are big lumps of wood, so were extruded 2.5mm.

    [IMG]

    Now I have a bit of a dilema, do I do another copy of the side without the center support, as there are several photo's of these wagons converted to 2 plank single bolster, with the center brace removed and replaced with one of the cast iron stanchion holders - my next headache.

    I feel the need for very strong coffee

    Fusion 360, been there done it, keep at it, once you have cracked the principles it's pretty logical.
    There a very good series of tutorials on You Tube (contents wise) if you can stomach the yank accent and his dreadful presentation style.
    Sorry can do the link thingy but its easy to find.

    And crack on with the wagon, I really want to see what it comes out like.

    and the inner side

    Next up will be to mirror the side, position it then create the ends and floor.

    A little more progress before starting the daily chores

    Side mirrored, then offset the correct distance (a scale 6' 10").

    Next I used the drawing to create the end profile of the planks and extruded to size, each plank had a fillet of 0.2 mm added to all edges.
    Same process for the buffer beam, but 2mm longer.

    Chores await so hopefully will be back later

    Bit more progress
    End has had the brackets added, then mirrored

    upload_2021-8-13_1-8-17.png

    I've got rivet detail for the W irons and holes for the grab handle and rope eyelets. Then the stanchions I suppose.

    But thats later

    Paul,

    It looks like your head has broken through that notional brick wall it looks a cracker.

    I took note of your "mirroring" and looked it up - that's a serious time saving command. I presume you draw a side on an offset plane half the width of the wagon, then mirror it. Guessing but I assume it mirrors the side on another offset plane the same difference as the first.

    Time to play and experiment.

    Aye the mirror tool is great, with a couple of proviso's

    The face you use as the mirror plane needs to be flat, so for the iron work on the sides to retain the end doors, it was easy to create the rear bracket from the front by selecting the body, then use the rear face as the mirror plane. (shown in yellow below).

    upload_2021-8-13_9-10-16.png

    But to get the brackets for the other end I couldn't set the mirror plane on either end. I got round it by making the side brackets part of the end body, then used the inner face of the end as the mirror plane. I suggest you hide the other bodies when you do the mirror, just in case there are unseen consequences.

    Of course in my excitement, I forgot to model the holes for the buffers and the coupling hook, also on the sides bolts for the W irons, holes for grab handles, rope eyelets etc.
    One of the features of Fusion is its time line running along the bottom of the screen, I have not played with this yet, but I'm hoping to back in the time line before the mirroring of ends and add the holes for the buffers, if it works then when I then go back to the end of the time line these holes should have all the same steps applied to them as the rest of the model, i.e. mirrored on to the other end. The just repeat the process for the bits I need to add.

    When I add the floor was there a standardish plank size ?

    Paul,

    I have taken to done the detailing as a separate sketch. Taking the chassis as an example, I drew and extrude the basic frame work, then drew a separate sketch of the detailing, flitch plates, rivets holes etc and extruded them on to the basic frame. Not saying it's the best way I just felt happier going down that route. Presumably you could apply the same logic to say the drag beam then mirror it.

    I know you can go back down the time line and re-edit a feature but I found it hard to locate the required feature, so where there were cockups, I used a new sketch. Long winded but all part of learning and finding the best way to do things, quick ways around problems will come with practice.

    I finally managed to draw the &*(^% brake lever, not sure what the problem was apart from a brain fart, so a test print is running now.

    Oh thanks for the notes on different Chutibox profiles for different resins, though it surprises me they differ that much. Filed away for when I used a different resin.

    Keep well

    Wait to you use the animate option with the time line! :facepalm: Oh my… nice results but i find it a jump around nightmare with the camera angles.

    Paul,

    The only floor plank width I know are for the NER D1/2, they are 6" wide so a nice simple 3.5mm.
    Data taken from a Richard Lacey drawing in the NER magazine.

    Here was the lever frame I did in Fusion 360 for a bit of fun. As it’s separate files, you can then drop the animation in to the rest of the building. In theory if you had a person you could animate…. Yeah, you could spend hours adjusting him to pull the levers… (hope you can see the release handles also pull and release.)

    I may revisit this one day.

    Hi Mossy

    Like you I tend to do multiple sketches on the various faces - so far 13 sketches, and I think 53 bodies.

    I use the combine comand from the Modify menu to reduce the number of bodies, hence only fours parts listed now in the bodies section.

    The side and end with (1) at the end of the name are the mirrored copy

    One of the minor irritations that I find with Fusion is the default setting when extruding is new body, especially when for the most part you really want to join it to the adjacent part. You can go back and edit the extrusion and change it without having to go through the combine command. if you click on the part that you have extruded and then right click and select edit feature it opens the extrude command.

    Actually having just tested it, you can do it even easier than that, just click on the extruded part and press E on the keyboard to get you straight into the extrude command.

    I totally agree Rob, yes why is the default New but what I also frustrating are the short cuts like E for extrude, obvious when you find them, but finding them is the trick.
    The other 2 I know are C - Circle, F - Fillet. Have you found any others?

    Hi Mossy,

    I have:scratchchin:

    A=Appearance
    L=line
    Q=Press/Pull
    R= 2 point rectangle
    D= dimension
    I am pretty sure that every letter on the keyboard has an assigned shortcut but finding and remembering them all is another matter.

    This might help - https://www.autodesk.co.uk/shortcuts/fusion-360
