    Cheers Rob for the tip

Generally I've not had to thin Vallejo paints down, but the Dark Red came out pretty viscous. Looks like I got lucky, but have just ordered up some thinner just in case. I have a bottle of railmatch thinners as well, seemingly that can also not play well with others.

Transfers are proving to be a pain.

HMRS do a Scottish Pre-grouping sheet, which has enough transfers for 3 HR wagons giving a cost of approx £7.50 per wagon (not inc p&p), checked out Fox Transfers and they don't do a wagon sheet, they do cover Loco's and coaching stock.
Fortunately the Highland Railway Society does produce wagon transfer sheets, so will need to get some from them.

Railmatch thinners will be for enamels though I assume?

Hi Rob - I have the Waterborne Railmatch thinner for thier Acrylics as I'd heard there was issues thinning Railmatch paint down. I try and avoid Enamels as I paint in the house, and even I find the Enamel spray fumes too much.

Following up on Ian's comment on it needing a friend, I made a little progress on the wheel front

    Jig printed successfully

Shaft cut to length and the leading edges chamfered.

A shallow taper reamer was used to slightly open up the holes in the ends of the wheels.

Axle made up and placed in jig, then super glue added to the joins - the tapers on the wheel ends giving a greater gluing surface.

    Couple of mins later

To hide the center gap I'm trying to print these covers

    upload_2021-10-29_16-42-57.png

They are pretty thin so fingers crossed.

They will be glued in place so should provide a bit extra strength.

Ahh got you, I had completely forgotten about railmatch acrylics, despite painting my A3 using them for the same reason as you use them.

    A little more progress

    And for scale

A little touching up of the red required than highlight the number. Seal with a coat of gloss clear cote ready for transfers, then weathering.

Time to start and make it a few friends and maybe a brake van

A little dry brushing and a faded white tyre line added, and I think i'm now stuck untill I get some transfers.

Paul I got some Highland Railway wagon transfers from oldtimeworkshop.co.uk. Yes I have a couple of highland wagons stashed, don't know why I bought them, just an impulse I guess.

Sent a email for the transfers order.

Ordered up a couple of sets of wagon transfers, and a set each of the 4 wheel & 6 wheel brake vans (a hint to future projects)

However my next projects look like being:

HR 8 ton goods wagon Type A - 15'6" over the head stocks
HR 8 ton low sided wagon - 15'6" over the head stocks
HR 8 ton medium wagon - 15'0" over the head stocks. - Has greedy bars fitted to stop sheep jumping out

Why these, well they have quite a lot in common

9ft wheel base, brake assembly at the wheel is the same (unfortunately not the same as the timber wagon), two of them differing having the Drummond patetented brake lever arrangement.

Hopefully these should progress fairly quickly

Oh boy have I had fun

    Firstly the easy bit

    Home made wheels

a few issues with reaming out the fixed W irons to take the the 3mm tube for the bearing (same issue for the Dapol wheel bearings) the outer boss tends to break. Which can be fixed by making the hole bigger on the print. I have some sets of Peco / Parkside Spoked wheels on order from Hattons, these are standard 8 spoke sheels with pin point axles and top hat bearings.

The wagon with the home made wheel set is now ready for the paint shop.

Now the fun stuff - lettering up the 1st wagon.

Waited for over a week for the reply from Old Time Workshop, a weird system, you email your order request, he then sends a pdf invoice and you arrange payment. Finally found the invoice in my spam folder. However in the mean time I had found that only the HR was on the transfer sheet, no running numbers.

By then I had bit the bullet and ordered up the Scottish Pre-Grouping sheet from HMRS (Methfix version first time i've used these) - great service, they arrived 2 days later, and the fun really started in ernest. Mr Ernest Murphy had been just biding his time for that special moment to just kick one in the nuts.

Gloss varnish was applied to the areas for the transfers.
A mix of 3 parts Meths : 1 part water was made up as per instructions.
Duly applied to the model and transfer - NUTS the meths lifted the paint.
    :hammer: :hammer:

The primer survived but the Dark Red and Black didn't. :headbanger: Cleaned & Hand painted the panel (where the H was). Applied Humbrol Clear gloss varnish. Waited 24 hours for it to harden. And tried again AArrrrrrrrrrgH :headbanger: same again, and thats two H's ruined as well.

Another clean and repaint of the black and red area. This time old school Humbrol Enamel Gloss varnish was brushed on - I don't like the fumes from airbrushing enamels, especially in the Man cave - there's only one person to filter out the vapours and he's already high on caffine.

Left 24 hours again to harden.

    :drums: :drums: :drums: ...................Yipeeeeeeeee ..............

Need to leave them 24 hours to harden, then apply a coat of gloss varnish.
I also have the General Tare weight sheet on order from HMRS (plus another Scottish pre grouping sheet).

Hopefully the wheels arrive soon and I can complete the 5 wagon rake.

    Hi Paul,

If you have Microsol/microset use that for your methfix transfers. It does the same job without harming the paint work.
But in the meantime dilute your meths by another 50 percent or so which will still work but be less aggressive.

    Cheers Rob,

I must admit I like the results (once I didn't have to repaint the wagon), are good, no sign of carrier paper etc.

Just waiting for the Tare weight's sheet to arrive to complete the lettering, then start on the weathering and load.

    Talking of wagon loads

Being the really enthusiastic gardener (there is a very heavy amount sarcasm, my preferred method of pruning involved serious amounts of unhealthy chemicals), I have an area of the garden with a purple flowered weed - the bee's etc love em so I tend to just leave them alone. However this year they have been left even longer, and have become dried out stalks.

About 10 straight ish stalks were havested.

Then cut into approx 100mm lengths, which will fit into the wagon.

I'll need to apply some filler into the ends as some bits are hollow.

Only 5 wagons worth to do.

My Parkside wheels arrived from Hattons

Fitted the top hat bearings and found they were too wide.

I did try filing the bearing area down, but after damaging two W irons trying to remove 1.5 mm of plastic, I decided to modify the W iron.

    upload_2021-12-3_0-58-33.png

The lefthand W iron is the original the right is the modified version

    upload_2021-12-3_1-0-22.png

I also increased the hole size by 0.2mm to help with reaming them out.

I used the Lychee slicer for these and printed with green resin - 4h20m later

The holes were reamed out and top hat bearings inserted.

    And placed on the wagon

there's even some side play - result.

I will paint the inner surfaces of the W irons before gluing into place.

I found the green resin more brittle.. or did I just “over cook it” in the UV?
