    Thanks Toto

    A little more progress

There is a feed / balance pipe between the front and rear water tanks

    upload_2021-1-29_16-55-17.png

These will fitted after, as they will cover nuts used to secure the etched brass step assembly

A 4mm version may be attempted, however for the 7mm version, I have just ordered up from Roxey Mouldings, Drummond 13" short buffers, hornblocks, whistle, handrail knobs and smokebox door darts. mmmm ....... this is starting to get serious :avatar:

Back to the chores, I have brownie points to earn (again !!!)

    Cheers Andy

Although I have orderd some Drummond Buffers from Roxey Mouldings, I thought I'd print some none working ones as a test

I created two versions - one with bolts, and 1 without

    upload_2021-1-31_11-8-11.png

Now to print them up - back sometime this evening with the results

    upload_2021-1-31_11-5-56.png

I'm printing body at 45 degrees, the roof also at 45 degrees, 8 buffers with bolts, and 4 of the water pipes

We'll see how it does in about 9 hours time.

Mate, why not draw the buffers up to work with a spring in them?

    Hi Andy

The body's may work, but I think heads especially the stem to hold the spring / retainer may be a little too brittle, these are mainly for static display, as at £22 + p&p for working ones, I'll buy them on a need to basis.

With 2 hours left to print

    And were done

The fun bit was trying to rinse the resin off before removing the parts from the build plate.

    Water tank pipes

Buffers - still need to remove the supports

    Roof

    Underside

The 45 degree print angle has made a major improvement

Left hand side 15 degree, right hand 45 degree

and the valance is spot on

Just need to leave them over night to dry off properly - otherwise you get white staining where the wet areas are and the IPA effects the resin. Then cure them up tomorrow beofre a wee bit of sanding.

Only a little progress as I'm waiting for my bits from Roxey & Eileens Emporium.

Did apply a little milliput to help smooth out some of the print irregularities

Then tried some Vallejo Surface primer on both of the printed bodies

But wasn't all incident free, coverage was a bit inconsistant, with blotches appearing without any apparent cause, but was traced to a bent needle  caused by having lost the front needle protector at some time in the past - afterall what use would it be :headbanger:
Tried my second (cheap) but this struggled to spray the primer, on checking found it had a 0.2mm needle and was blocking very quickly.
On stripping this one down, and trying to remove the nozzle it broke off :hammer:

OK , time for a rather strong coffee

Stripped the first airbrush down, and replaced the needle (I had spares for the second brush), and pinched the needle guard.
Second gun now available for spares.

And this afternoon the Roxey Stuff arrived

    Short and Medium handrail knobs

    Drummond Short sprung buffers

I will need to add wire for the bolts (thats on order from Eileens Emporium

    Smokebox door handle

And a Urie whistle which looks similar

And the frightening bit, sprung hornblocks for the chassis.

The primer has shown up a few more imperfections - which was the reason for doing it.

But milliput seems a bit overkill, I'm sure I've got some model filler (in a safe place) so will try that once the paint is fully dry.

At least someone has stock of Markits parts! Top quality stuff but often hard work to get an order actually delivered from him.:hammer:

And my wire has arrived as well

Started on the cab handrail first.

I slid two handrail knobs on to the 0.7mm wire, soldering one knob to the handrail, then inseted onto the model and the second handrail quickly soldered into position.

Same repeated for the other side.

The handrails for the tank tops and smokebox / boiler looked to be something more of a challenge, so I decided to have a go at making some jigs.

Two for the tank top hand rails

First to help bend the rail to shape

    upload_2021-2-6_2-9-34.png

The wire is first bent around the bottom part of the jig so that it will fit in the top half of the jig, the wire is then bent back horizontal to give the correct shape.

Then use jig two - soldering jig

    upload_2021-2-6_2-13-25.png

It works by threading two handrail knobs per side on to the formed hadrail, the inserting the assembly into the jig with the curved handrail passing through the center of the jig, supported at the correct height. The knobs are then soldered into to position - at least that the theory.

The final jig is for the smokebox door / boiler side

    upload_2021-2-6_2-18-9.png

Again the wire is formed around the main curve until it will fit in the slot, a handrail knob is threaded on to center of the curve, and inserted into the jig.
The wire is then bent horizontal at both sides, and finaly bent back over the edge 90 degrees.

All the jigs are printing so hopefully will be ready for when I get up, and I can take some photos of them in action - provided they work.

Well I screwed up on the first jig, I forgot to allow for the thickness of the wire so the wire didn't line up with the handrail knob center line

Couple of changes, and another print, and were off

The wire is bent around the bottom part of the jig until it will it fits, and the the wire is bent back on itself using the lugs

Next up four hand rail knobs are threaded on

And then inserted on to 2nd jig ready for soldering

Notice the support in the middle to keep the handrail level

Plenty of flux, and just tagged with minimal solder, gives little clean up

Just needs gluing and trimming to finish

    Time to walk the dog

Same process for the smokebox door hand rails

and also fitted the smokebox door handle.

Not sure wether to fit the buffers now or later ..... mmmmm

Next job will be another coat of primer, and if all looks ok then maybe a coat of matt black.

Ingenious method Paul... could such a device be made for rounded over the smokebox door type locos... and I'm not taking about posh engines with green paint and shiney copper bits stuck on. :avatar::tophat::tophat::tophat:

Actually, the first jig would make a good form tool, think I will have a play with the design.

Post up a pick of the handrail you wish to form up.

Done a layer of paint, a little more filling and sanding to clear the last few blemishes.

Will post picks once its dry enough to touch.
