How can it happen?

My utter dislike of QSI decoders is well documented but here is yet another event...or is it something else? The original decoder on my Eureka standard goods 5165 decided to destroy itself for no reason, just running one minute and not the next. Apparently a manufacturing problem caused wheel binding which overloaded the decoder. Identified and repaired by Eureka. Just recently it decided to stop again, same thing, i e running then just stopped. Could not find anything so confined it to the engine shed in disgrace. Today I installed a decoder in my fourth Auscision 48, placed on track and selected address 3 as per normal. Lo and behold, 5165 fired up????? Removed the 48 (which had also fired up) and sure enough 5165 ran like a thoroughbred. Address is now reset to 5165.

Question...I pressed nothing on my NCE Procab so how did the QSI decoder reset itself?

    Cheers

    and happy (but exasperated) modelling

Very strange. :scratchchin: the only common thing between the two would be the short address. I know this sounds a bit daft but you did not hit the short address 03 instead of the long address as that would operate the two. Sorry I can't be of more help.

I have experienced odd behaviour with decoders before but they tend to clear themselves. There again maybe in my case it has been operator error. Especially in the early days. :avatar: maybe also try another decoder brand.

    Cheers

My Dapol track cleaner, which was set to 01, caused a reset on my controller. 2 locos which were on the layout at the time then refused to work. Turns out they had reset themselves to 03. (Both Hornby R8249 8 Pin decoders)

Hi Richard this is quite common on the QSI decoder used by Eureka
Often if it is fitted with the reed swithch for the magnetic wand adjustment it will randomly trigger and reset the decoder often occurs passing another model etc
Have seen it occur on the club layout several times with eureka models 38 class, 620 rm, CPH, R class however never seen a 50 class though, I don’t think any members purchased them.
Also seen a video of it occurring in a eureka CPH every time it was run past a model would trigger the reset
On a couple of the models that club members have, that do this I have removed the reed switch and they have been all ok since, may be worth looking at to see if yours has the reed switch and unsolder it at one post so it doesn’t interfere with operation.

    Thanks Chris

Yes it certainly does have a reed switch arrangement. I will remove it as you suggest and thanks for the info as it was certainly a baffling situation which I had almost confined to the "dark art" box.

    Cheers

    and happy modelling
