Over on the GOG forum this Ivatt kit build is drawing a heap of attention from the long time builders, interesting many well know luminaries have this same ACME kit stashed away in their cupboards but it seems they all shy away from getting theirs made, the main topic of discussion on my thread there is whose is the signature on the etches... hmmm ... I'll get back to building this kit me thinks.:avatar:

By that I take it that the three of you will be going to the York show again over Easter this year? I'll be going and I expect Pete and Ron will too, so looks like another meetup is on the cards. Looking forward to it already!

A brave man indeed on a motor bike at this time of the year and in Scotland too, "Frozen Assets" is the phrase that springs to mind!:giggle::giggle:

Maybe this is why there is a roll of bog paper next to the alcohol in Paul's previous pic...

    Cheers, Gary.

Yup Gary... its actually kitchen roll which I use to wipe flux away before washing down the work piece with Bar keeper's Friend. Alternatively of course when Toto lands here at Easter for the York Show I can use that roll for emergency purposes if he brings a suitcase full of kits with him for me to build. :avatar::avatar::avatar:

Thanks for liking my work Gary... I'll pop a few more pics up on the FB site soon.

Having finished fabricating the bunker last week and dry fitted the assembly to the loco frames it was time to form the cab roof to make a good fit, so with some gentle tweeks and an internal former made to keep the profile shape I set to making the cab roof sliding vent hatch. The original item that came on the etch was quite wrong in every way so a new one was made which looks much more the part. I think the old vent hatch can be sliced in half and the bits used to make the cab seats, items which were not included originally. The photo shows the comparison.

Today I was determined to sort out the back end of this loco once and for all, there were several niggly small issues all at play and each had to be dealt with in an order of sequence, first off was to complete the cab internals which have to be soldered for strength. A pair of thin strips with a groove was soldered just below the cab side windows, this helps the side from flexing when the roof is fitted and the groove will allow for a sliding window to be fitted when it comes time to glaze the loco. Next off was a pair of seat bracket supports which I fashioned from the redundant roof vent, this will take a wooden seat base which will be added after internal painting has been done. Finall I added the Ivatt hand brake column into position and fashioned a coal plate from more redundant ACME etches... namely the incorrect cylinder wrapper which is a half etch and just the right thickness too. Backhead and reverser along with other stuff will go in later but for now I could move onto the next stage.

So the rear bunker step and grab rail was fitted which I'd made from small pieces of scrap etch, this made the back end look more complete but under closer examination a couple of edges which I'd missed when checking had been soldered out of alignment, soon rectified and the bunker sat nice and straight on the footplate base. Once tack soldered to check everything was sitting correctly I then proceeded to seam solder the base, suddenly we were getting somewhere I felt even though I'd had this sneaky suspicion that the cab roof was a tad too short.

What was also strange was that the frames appeared also too short by 1mm at the back where the rear buffer beam needs to be, the logical answer was that the side tanks had been fitted 1mm too far back thus throwing the cab structure out of position but the side tanks which had the cabs sides as one piece could only have gone in the place where I had set them and I'm certainly not undoing about six weeks work so the cab roof will have a small extension added to it. Also it was not possible to push the bunker forward by 1mm because that would throw the door cut out on the cab roof slope out of alignment, this is just one of those things which one comes across in old kitchen table drawn kits... if I had my way they would all be consigned to the kitchen bin. :avatar: I'l modify the roof profile adding in the rain strips and filing down the lower side as the overhang is excessive in my opinion for this second batch of Ivatts built under BR. I can then locate the rear buffer beam onto the frames with a small internal extension piece which will then complete all the structural work on the body and it will be a matter of just dressing the bodyshell with fittings.

Well today the sun is shining and I've migrated back into the workshop to do the bench work, things have progressed nicely with the completion of the bunker and final tweaking of the removable cab roof making it a snug fit, getting the rear buffer beam to sit properly was a bit of a nighmare as there was nothing of any substance apart from the lower edge of the bunker to solder to, so I resorted to improvisation and made a temporary former to hold the beam in place and then added the top flange edge above the beam. The lamp irons are yet to be added.

Pretty much all of the boiler dressing has been completed, just one more tank stay to the left of the firebox to be added and then disaster struck... moving back to the workshop it appears one of the firebox mud hole door covers has gone missing, these are tiny copper pressings and I will have to order replacements even tho I only need one. Moral of the story DON'T use Araldite to bond copper to tinplate... the tack strength degrades after a few weeks releasing the bond. I'll take the others off and reset them with cyano.

This morning I made up the ejector assembly adding in some 0.6mm wire for the plumbing, still have to put in the oil pipe from the atomiser to the ejector. The hole just below the chimney is where I'd incorrectly placed the oil atomiser, its too big to solder so I'll have to filler it with two pack.

Well at least I got the buffing height correct as the picture shows... hmmm oh dear things seem to be taking a funny turn because this has a decidedly Southern Region flavour to it. :avatar:

No not at all Keith, in fact I am very tempted to purchase a Rebuilt Merchant Navy from Scorpio now that it has been reworked from its earlier Acorn guise, I'd quite like to do Ellerman Lines as I actually saw this loco standing on the blocks at Waterloo a few months before its withdrawal.

About the only Southern steam loco I’d have on my layout. Rebuilt or original steam line. That and a Terrier. (Actually I’m and IOW fan when it’s SR.

but diesels appear to be something else when I have an 07, 33, 73 and 4Vep already in the stable.
