Not a great deal done today as I have been messing about with a new tool I bought last year and have just got around to assembling.
What I have done is fold both solebars, I haven't soldered them on yet all being well thats tomorrows job.
One thing I'm going to have to give a good coat of thinking about are the foot boards. To me they are an important part of the charm of these vintage carriages, however, the GER removed them from their 6 wheel coaches due to gauging problems on the platforms. Personally I would like to fit them as i really like the look but when I fixed down the platform, I hadn't considered possibility of clearance problems, I suppose I could tack them in place, and take them off again but I'd really love to see them on. Anyway here's a quick shot of the coach as it is at the moment.

Very nice Sir. I see you still have these fidgety little brackets to fit on the sole bars as well. glad that's over with. Well done with the vents as well. They look neat. One of mine came off a while back when I was scrubbing the coach but you can live with that. Easy enough to go back on again.

When I am sweating these things on, I try not to rely solely on the solder from beneath but also add a smidgeon onto the iron as I try to tease ot out around the edges of the piece. Ideally you would not have to do that as it all adds to the cleaning process afterwards but if you can keep it to a mere tiny amount, it ain't to bad.

Hopefully these issues will go with experience but would be doubtful that they will be eradicated for all time.:avatar:

    Coming on regardless though. :thumbs::thumbs::thumbs:

Wow, best part of 3 weeks since the last update. To be fair we've had quite a lot going on which has caused some problems. I have taken the good weather to get part of the garden done, I've only been here 16 years so I thought I had better show willing .

Then Karens parents needed to be sorted out, where they were living with my brother in law became unsafe as their neighbour keeps setting fire to his flat  he did it again a week ago and that was the final straw.

Anyway enough of that. Here's what I have managed to get done over the last couple of weeks.
First I folded the sole bars and soldered the little strap things on. Fitted them to the coach.
Next I made up the footboards and soldered them on followed by the lower steps with their brass wire hangers.
Which is roughly where I'm at now. I also fitted the rear steps.
Any hoo a couple or three photos.

I've also made a start on the white metal springs and axle boxes, there's quite a bit of flash on them which is taking a while to clean up, I've done 3 ready to fit, think I'm going to bite the bullet and solder them on, what could possibly go wrong..........

    Cheers for now. Pete.

I fitted the springs and axleguards on Friday as SWMBO was on parent sitting dutys thus giving me some modelling time. I decided to solder them on and to be fair it wasn't as scary as I had expected. However, I won't show my soldering as it looks like a pidgeon has crapped solder on the under frame.

I have also made a start on the sprung axle units, only the one so far as I wanted to make sure they would fit ok, and it does.
For some reason the photo is not uploading so I will start a new post.

    Pete.

    Thats more like it.

They are pretty easy to assemble but care has to be taken to get the brass washers in place as they perform as axle bearings.

Just got the other two to build. I don't want to paint them as it might cause running problems, so I think I may use Carrs metal black and weathering powders. We'll see when I get that far.

    Cheers, Pete.

Cheers Mark, it's taking a lot longer than expected, not because of any problems, more squeezing modelling time :whatever:. Hopefully the next one won't take so long.

I didn't know you were a pigeon fancier Pete. :avatar: nice job. I'll be interested to see how these spring axles are placed and fitted. Keep us in the know on that one.

I think in all probability they will be soldered in after the body is painted and the wheels etc are painted.

It just means you'll be scraping paint away to get to a surface you can solder to. :scratchchin: caught between the devil and the deep blue sea there.

Not a problem mate, just put a dab of maskol on the underside before painting.

Ok so today I have been mostly blackening the suspension units using a gun blue concoction I bought online as I didn't have enough Carrs potion left.

    IMG_2473.JPG

I tried it out on a scrap of brass etch to see what it looked like and to see how long it took to work.

    IMG_2474.JPG

    IMG_2475.JPG

I was quite happy with the result which took about 5 minutes to get this result, so it was on with the units.
This is the parts after rinsing off with clean water, just going to let them dry thoroughly before re assembling them.
    IMG_2476.JPG

I've also cut down the ends of the axles flush with the wheels and primered one set of wheels ready for painting.

    IMG_2477.JPG

Thats it for now, I've got me doggys to feed and sort out our dinner, fish and home made chips.

    Cheers, Pete.

Hi Paul, yes it is really good. It cost me £15 inc, and seems around 3 times the amount as Carrs if not more. It colours the metal without leaving any residue though I did notice the tissue I used to dab the parts dry did get some black colour on it so it may need something to fix it if its going to be in an area, couplings, connecting rods etc, likely to be handled.

If you are going to handle it, Pete try polishing it with a cotton bud it stops the blackening coming off.

That is what one of the other buyers said when I asked on the Amazon site. Fortunately I won't be doing much handling on these parts until fitting them, then they will be tucked away behind the steps and wheels out of the way. Another said a light oiling would do the job, probably best for connecting rods etc, I will try it on the locos rods when I get back to that.

    Cheers, Pete.
