This is likely to be a rambling bunch of post's on various things I am working on, and rather than keep hijacking other members threads I can shove them all on here. First up is the fitting of an LaisDCC 21 pin chip into my recently purchased Dapol 08, I know Keith of this parish swears by them so I sent off for one as I reasoned that if chip was going to be fried, I'd rather it cost a tenner rather than £100. I was surprised how small it was on opening the jiffy bag, on fitting it I was a little concerned on how loose a fit it was on the pins, I would not be surprised if it came off if I turned the loco upside down, dunno if its supposed to be like that but any way it worked, gave it 15 minutes running forward and reverse and not a stutter, well impressed, it's not staying in there as it was only to try the loco on DCC, I can now fit the sound chip with some confidence.
A couple of photo's of it running on my new rolling road, first time I've used them.

Thats all for now, cheer's, Pete.

    Hi Pete,
Did you try it with the lights connected to see if they worked correctly?

I fitted a 21 pin Lais decoder into a Bachmann "Thumper" EMU and pins were a very snug fit so can't understand why your fitting was loose unless the pins on your board were a little undersize. Might be wise to slightly bend each row of pins in towards the other to tighten things up a bit. Glad to see you've taken the plunge and gone down the "Workbench" route to share what you're up to with us all!

Hi Keith, thanks for that suggestion, I don't want to leave that decoder in as it was only bought to check the loco on DCC, and it ran lovely, I,m going to fit the Zimo sound chip once I've soldered on the stay alive, not a big job but one of many vying for my attention at the mo', I always wonder how I got thing's done before I finished work :avatar:.

Well I soldered the stay alive to my sound chip, new 15watt iron, quick in and out no lingering on the contact pads, all looked good, came to fit it to the loco and the positive pad came of the chip, no way of telling how its fitted as there is no solder or metal contact as far as I can see, so I have emailed Paul Chetter to see what to do next.

My commiserations on that, Pete, it's easily done and not so easily fixed. I had that happen on a Hornby decoder in a class 08 shunter I bought, and I count myself as a very experienced solderer, so don't beat yourself up about it. Some of these solder pads are very small and the slightest amount of heat can result in the problem you have. Is it possible to see what is soldered to the back of this pad? You just might be able to get a connection onto that point if it's visible, but you'll need to be very careful. If all else fails, I'd try 'countersinking' using a small drill in the hole where the connection to the pad comes through from the component side, since you just might find a tiny wire end from said component that you could solder to, but go VERY carefully as you don't want to break through. Are you aware that Zimo do a (relatively) cheap decoder replacement service for faulty ones? I believe it's about £25 for a sound decoder + sound download......don't know if they would class a disappearing solder pad as 'faulty', but if all else fails, it's a better bet than stumping up another 100 quid.
    Best of luck with it,
    Keith.

Hi Keith, I've tried to see where the pc's go under the covering but they are so thin and go to different components I wouldn't dare try messing with it, what is annoying me is Paul told me not to worry too much about getting too much heat in there as at the factory the whole thing is assembled and then passed through an oven at 400 degrees to solder the chip at one go, no I suspect it is a faulty chip, I'm just waiting to hear back from Mr Chetter.

Well I have had no reply from Paul Chetter so I have decided to go ahead and fit the chip anyway, I know I won't be having anything from him in future, once bitten twice shy, I didn't want to fall foul of Ron so I got myself a couple of figures for the crew, they are Slaters white metal, a bit odd looking but with pose-able arms, though the arms wouldn't reach any of the controls in the cab no matter what I did with them?

    Before painting,

    After joints filled,

    Painted but not detailed,

    Detailed and ready to install,

Glued to cab floor with 2pack epoxy,

Installed in loco, also note cab side numbers changed to represent a Barrow Hill, 41E allocated engine, I finished up scraping the old numbers off with a craft knife, I had to replace all the numbers as the Fox transfers are slightly bigger than the originals.

I made a short video of it on my plank and posted it on Youtube, I shared that to our Facebook page, unfortunately for some reason I cannot get it on here , but here is a still I took.

Thats it for now, cheers, Pete.

    Nice work Pete,

My warped sense of humour looked at your crew before you put them in the loco, and the way you had them posed side by side, they looked like were doing a new sort of dance......possibly to Nutbush City Limits.......sorry mate but that`s the first thing that came into my head.:whatever::whatever::whatever::whatever:.

Now seriously they do look good in the cab, and yes of course it keeps Ron off your back....:avatar:

Thanks lads, Ron to be fair locos without crew are one of my bug bears, especially with open cabs/tender locos, they look much better with crew.

Gormo, you're right they do look weird! try as I might I couldn't get them to look right but in the cab they're not so bad, next up is the Andrew Barclay, the crew for that have got to be spot on as they will be on full view, I've got about half a dozen figure's to choose from, I will see how they turn out!

    Cheer's, Pete.

Ages ago I bought a part built Vulcan models 03 shunter kit in O scale, I posted about it just after I got it but for the life of me I can't find the original post, so apologies for repeating myself but I'm going to update here.
When I got it I knew it was missing some parts, the seller did warn me but for £40 I thought it worth a punt. Well on examining it at home I realised I had bought a pup :whatever:. The chassis was missing, no worries, I can make my own. The builder had made up the footplate/running board but it looks like a banana, the bonnet is a resin moulding with cast in louvres, also supplied are etched brass engine doors with louvres, much tidier looking, he had glued one on, but hadn't removed the cast ones so there was a gap under it. Some of the parts must have been fitted to the original chassis as they are missing. Again not a big problem, I can make my own.
Anyway, I will post up photos of the before and after as I build it but first up are some photos of the chassis I have scratch built, more to be done to it but its a start.

Not particularly exiting but it gives me a bit of a boost as the work on my big building is getting a chore, a change is as good as a rest I'm told, updates may be a bit erratic but its got to be built as its going to be used on Wheeldon when thats operational.

    Cheer's, Pete.

Its a long time since posting on here, I have done some work on my bench since but nothing really worth sharing.
Anyway, since Ron and Ed have started 7mm narrow gauge layouts and Jimmy Styles has his 009 WW1 layout on the blocks, I thought I would share some of the things I did when modelling O16.5 a few years ago.
First up is a coach I started building from some Peco coach parts, sides and roofs. I scratch built the floor, ends and internal partitions. I used Ratio 4mm bogie kits to make it into a bogie coach. Still lots to do on it, not least work out how to fit couplings as the one I fitted doesn't work!

    IMG_1725.JPG

I bought a second hand Peco Glynn Valley Tramway loco from the 7mm Narrow gauge society show in Burton on Trent, it has had a bit of a battering but looks ok and runs fine on a veteran Triang 060 chassis.

    IMG_1726.JPG

I also converted a Hornby 040 Smokey Joe engine but fitted it with skirts as I don't like the look of the connecting rod.

    IMG_1728.JPG

And with a wagon. (still waiting for couplings too!)

    IMG_1729.JPG

The point its sitting on is one of 9 I built for the layout I was planning. I still have them all plus loads of Peco crazy track. With all the interest in narrow gauge at the moment on here, I may dig it all out again and make another start :faint::rolleyes:

    Cheer's, Pete.
